Born in Milan in 1935 and trained as an architect, he designed electronic calculators, audio equipment, seating, modular systems, museums, exhibition centres and major public buildings. Camaleonda, Le Bambole and Cab belong to the history of furniture design, while his work for Olivetti reveals his relationship with technology, and projects such as Villa Erba, the Tokyo Design Center, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Department of Islamic Art at the Louvre show the later development of his architectural practice. The common thread lies in the way technical structure, materials and the relationship with the body become form.

Mario Bellini: biography, education and a career between design and architecture

Mario Bellini was born in Milan in 1935 and graduated in architecture in 1959. His career took shape at a decisive moment for Italian industry, when furniture, electronics and office-equipment companies were developing new languages for products becoming increasingly present in everyday life. From 1963, Bellini worked as an industrial design consultant for Olivetti, a collaboration that would become one of the defining chapters of his career.

The quantity and variety of his projects explain why it is difficult to place him within a single discipline. Mario Bellini Architects highlights the eight Compasso d’Oro awards he received during his career and the 25 works held in the design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1987, MoMA also devoted the solo exhibition Mario Bellini: Designer to his work, focusing on furniture, machines and objects developed from the 1960s onwards. From 1985 to 1991, he served as editor of Domus, further expanding his role in the architectural and design debate.

This versatility does not mean applying the same style to different types of objects. What is more interesting is Bellini’s ability to carry certain questions from one scale to another: what should a new technology look like? How does the body relate to a seat? How visible should structure be? How can a building organise complex circulation without losing its identity?

From electronic products to furniture: form, body and technology

Bellini entered industrial design during the transition from mechanical machines to electronic devices. The challenge therefore went beyond the aesthetics of existing objects. Dimensions, methods of use and internal components were changing, and with them the relationship between machine and user.

The Museum of Modern Art identifies this period as one of Bellini’s most significant contributions. In his products for Olivetti, new materials such as plastic and rubber allowed electronic equipment to acquire a more tactile quality and a closer relationship with the body. This is particularly evident in the Divisumma 18, where a calculating machine is enclosed within a soft, continuous surface, very different from the traditional appearance of office equipment.

This attention to surface reappears in his furniture, although with a different meaning. In Cab, the leather covering acts like a skin stretched over a skeleton; in Le Bambole, the structure almost seems to dissolve inside the upholstered volume; in Camaleonda, deep tufting makes the modular construction immediately visible.

Form, in other words, is never separated from the way an object is touched, used or assembled.

Olivetti: designing the image of new electronic machines

The collaboration with Olivetti allowed Bellini to work on some of the technological objects that accompanied the transition towards electronics.

MoMA’s collection includes, among others, the 1965 Programma 101 Electronic Desktop Computer, the P203 Micro-Computer from 1966, the TCV 250 video terminal from the same year and several calculators from the 1970s. The Programma 101, manufactured by Olivetti and attributed to Bellini for its design in the museum’s collection, uses a die-cast aluminium shell to bring the machine together into a compact and visually legible volume.

With the Divisumma 18 of 1972, the relationship between technology and tactility becomes even more explicit. Its ABS plastic body is combined with synthetic-rubber components, while the keyboard uses small raised buttons. MoMA emphasises how different the machine was from the heavy calculating equipment that preceded it: smaller, portable and designed for a direct relationship with the user.

These projects help explain an important aspect of Bellini’s method. Technology is not simply given a new outer shell. The designer seeks a comprehensible form for a new category of objects, translating technical components and functions into a less mechanical presence within domestic or professional environments.

Camaleonda: when the sofa becomes a system for shaping space

In 1970, Mario Bellini designed Camaleonda for B&B Italia, one of the most recognisable seating systems in Italian design. Its defining characteristic, however, is not simply its upholstered form: it is its modularity.

The original version uses a square 90 × 90 cm seat module together with backrests and armrests that can be connected through a system of cables, hooks and rings. The elements can therefore be separated and recombined, turning the sofa into a variable configuration rather than a fixed object. B&B Italia retained this principle in the re-edition introduced in 2020, preserving the proportions, tufting and compositional logic of the original design.

This is where the relationship between furniture and domestic architecture becomes particularly clear. A Camaleonda module can stand alone, be multiplied, arranged in a linear layout or expanded into a much larger composition. The seating system becomes a tool for shaping the interior landscape.

The contemporary popularity of the design has brought renewed attention to a form of research strongly associated with the 1970s: the home as a flexible space, less constrained by the conventional sofa-armchair-coffee-table arrangement.

Le Bambole: concealing structure to make comfort visible

Two years later, in 1972, Bellini developed the Le Bambole family for B&B Italia. The design received the Compasso d’Oro in 1979 and includes seating in which the load-bearing structure is visually absorbed by the upholstery. B&B Italia identifies the apparent absence of a rigid frame, together with softness and elasticity, as defining characteristics of the collection.

Compared with Camaleonda, the way the object establishes its presence changes radically. Camaleonda reveals its system through repeatable modules and the deep marks of its tufting. Le Bambole instead seeks a more compact and continuous form, in which seat, backrest and armrests appear to compress and deform together.

The re-edition developed by B&B Italia for the fiftieth anniversary of the design revised the internal construction, replacing some of the original solutions and making the elements easier to separate. The current collection includes Bambola, Bibambola, Granbambola and Bamboletto.

In 2026, Le Bambole therefore continues to function as a contemporary product rather than simply as a historic piece preserved in a museum.

Cab: a steel skeleton wrapped in a leather skin

With the 1977 Cab chair for Cassina, Bellini approaches seating through an almost anatomical relationship between structure and covering.

Cassina describes Cab as the first chair characterised by a self-supporting leather structure built around the relationship between skeleton and skin. The covering consists of 22 individual leather elements, each cut, processed and stitched before being pulled over a tubular steel frame and fastened with zips.

The construction explains the form. Leather is not simply a covering applied at the end of the process: it contributes to the definition of the external surface and makes the tension between the internal structure and its envelope visible.

It is useful to compare Cab with Le Bambole. In the B&B Italia system, the structure tends to disappear beneath the upholstery; in the Cassina chair, by contrast, there is an explicit relationship between a structural body and the skin that wraps around it. They are two different responses to the same problem: how to turn the construction of a seat into a visual and physical experience.

Totem: when electronics enter the domestic interior

Another project that helps explain Bellini’s approach is the Totem RR 130 stereo system, designed for Brionvega in 1970. MoMA holds it in its collection and documents its construction in lacquered wood and electronic components, with detachable speakers.

When closed, Totem takes the elementary geometry of a compact volume. Once opened, the components required for listening separate and the machine completely changes its configuration.

It is a significant example because it brings electronics into the domestic interior without attempting to disguise the equipment as conventional furniture. Instead, the object establishes its own architectural presence, defined by transformation, symmetry and moving parts.

From objects to buildings: Mario Bellini’s move into architecture

From the 1980s onwards, Bellini’s work became increasingly focused on architecture. His studio lists among his principal projects the Portello trade fair district in Milan, the Villa Erba exhibition centre, the Tokyo Design Center, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Museum of the History of Bologna, the new Department of Islamic Art at the Louvre and other major public and commercial developments.

It would be unconvincing, however, to interpret this shift as a break from design. In his furniture, Bellini had already worked with modularity, envelopes, structures, patterns of use and transformation. In architecture, these questions simply move to a different scale.

Villa Erba and the Tokyo Design Center illustrate this evolution particularly well.

Villa Erba: technology and landscape on Lake Como

The Villa Erba Exhibition and Congress Centre in Cernobbio was designed in the late 1980s and completed in 1990. The complex uses glass and steel in a composition that recalls the historic greenhouse structures found in the Lake Como landscape, seeking to insert a large exhibition building within the grounds of the nineteenth-century villa.

At the heart of the complex is a circular volume from which several wings extend. The transparency of the surfaces allows the surrounding landscape to remain constantly present in the perception of the interior spaces.

The project is important in Bellini’s career because it marks the consolidation of his work at an architectural scale after two decades strongly associated with industrial products. The construction technology remains visible, but it is placed in dialogue with context, existing architecture and landscape.

Tokyo Design Center: a building shaped as an urban route

The Tokyo Design Center was designed between 1988 and the early 1990s and completed in December 1991 according to the centre’s official documentation. Designed for showrooms and activities connected with design, the building occupies an irregular urban site in Gotanda.

One of its central features is the system of open spaces, stairs and connections that leads from the street towards the interior of the building. The main façade facing the large urban thoroughfare remains comparatively controlled, while the rear develops a much more articulated composition.

Bellini uses the building almost as a device for movement. As in his furniture systems, form is not understood only from the front: it acquires meaning by being crossed and by establishing relationships between its parts.

National Gallery of Victoria: transforming an existing museum

In Melbourne, Mario Bellini served as principal architect for the major redevelopment of the National Gallery of Victoria International, which reopened in 2003. That same year, the museum dedicated a monographic exhibition to him, reviewing approximately forty years of work across architecture and design.

The intervention begins with the building designed by Roy Grounds and reorganises important parts of it, from the galleries and circulation systems to the central spaces.

This is a significant moment because the architectural project engages with a structure that already possesses a strong identity. Bellini therefore works through transformation rather than complete replacement, a theme that becomes even more evident in his later project at the Louvre in Paris.

Louvre: new architecture beneath the Cour Visconti

In 2012, the new galleries of the Department of Islamic Art at the Musée du Louvre were inaugurated. The architectural intervention within the Cour Visconti was designed by Mario Bellini and Rudy Ricciotti, with Renaud Piérard responsible for the architecture and museography of the exhibition spaces.

The immediately recognisable element is the undulating glass-and-metal roof suspended within the historic courtyard. Beneath it, two levels are organised to house the collections.

The relationship with the Louvre palace is constructed through distance: the new structure neither replicates nor conceals the historic façades. The large contemporary canopy remains autonomous while staying low enough to preserve views of the architecture of the Cour Visconti.

Here again, a theme already present in Bellini’s objects returns: a lightweight envelope radically changes the perception of a more complex structure beneath it.

Why Camaleonda, Le Bambole and Cab are central again today

Renewed interest in 1960s and 1970s design has brought many of Bellini’s works back into contemporary interiors, but in his case the return of these icons is also supported by continued production.

In 2026, Camaleonda and Le Bambole remain in the B&B Italia collection, while Cab continues to form part of the Cassina catalogue. Camaleonda was reissued in 2020 while retaining the modularity of the original 1970 design; Le Bambole was reworked for the fiftieth anniversary of the project; and Cab continues to be produced through the complex leather craftsmanship that defines its construction.

Museum recognition also continues. MoMA lists 25 works by Mario Bellini on its artist page and, in 2025, included the Olivetti TCV 250 terminal in the exhibition Pirouette: Turning Points in Design.

Reducing this renewed interest to a revival of 1970s aesthetics would miss the more important point. Camaleonda remains relevant because it can change configuration; Cab because it makes construction and covering inseparable; Le Bambole because it continues to place comfort at the centre of form.

Mario Bellini between object, body and architecture

Seen together, an Olivetti calculator, an upholstered armchair and the roof of the Louvre might appear to be completely unrelated projects. Yet within the work of Mario Bellini there is a precise continuity.

New technologies are made accessible through surfaces and volumes that establish a relationship with the body. Furniture turns structure, upholstery and covering into a language. Modular systems allow users to modify space. Architecture organises routes and large envelopes while seeking a balance between the presence of the new and the conditions of the site.

It is this ability to move from the industrial detail to the urban scale without separating use, technology and form that explains Bellini’s position within Italian design culture. His furniture icons are the most immediately recognisable part of his work, but they acquire greater meaning when read alongside the machines, interiors and buildings that have accompanied more than sixty years of practice.

Mario Bellini is one of the figures who best demonstrates how Italian design in the second half of the twentieth century was able to operate across very different scales.
