Travertine in interior design<\/strong> is now used far beyond the classic beige floor: it covers walls, bathrooms and kitchen volumes, but also becomes tables, consoles, washbasins and sculptural elements. Its identity depends on genuine characteristics of the stone \u2014 stratification, natural cavities, colour, cutting direction and finish<\/strong> \u2014 which can produce very different surfaces. Vein cut and cross cut radically change the pattern; open-pore and filled finishes affect tactility and maintenance; honing, brushing and polishing alter the way the material responds to light. It is precisely this variability, rather than a generic beige aesthetic, that explains the renewed importance of travertine in contemporary interiors.<\/p>\n

What is travertine and why does it have such a distinctive surface?<\/h2>\n

Travertine is a limestone composed predominantly of calcium carbonate<\/strong>. Its formation is linked to the precipitation of calcium carbonate from mineral-rich water; the U.S. Geological Survey documents this process in the thermal systems of Mammoth Hot Springs, where the release of carbon dioxide from the water encourages the deposition of the material.<\/p>\n

From an interior design perspective, the most obvious characteristic is the system of cavities running through the stone. The Natural Stone Institute explains that voids are an intrinsic characteristic of genuine travertine<\/strong>, rather than necessarily a defect or an indication of inferior quality. During processing, cavities that reach the surface can either be left open or filled with cementitious or resin-based materials. Others remain inside the slab and may occasionally become exposed through wear.<\/p>\n

This also means that the term \u201cporous travertine\u201d does not imply identical performance across every variety. The Natural Stone Institute records absorption values for limestone and travertine that can vary considerably from one stone to another: selection, finish and application must therefore be assessed for the specific material<\/strong>, rather than on the commercial name alone.<\/p>\n

Why travertine has become central to contemporary interiors again<\/h2>\n

Rather than a sudden comeback, travertine’s renewed presence has been developing for several years. Architectural Digest<\/em> had already highlighted its return to interiors through bathtubs, tables, islands and architectural surfaces. In 2026, the material continues to appear in very different contexts: Livingetc<\/em> includes it among the stones used for continuous kitchen surfaces, while ELLE Decor<\/em> explicitly cites travertine and honed finishes<\/strong> among the materials appearing in bathrooms in 2026.<\/p>\n

Product design also confirms that this is more than a revival of 1970s flooring. At Milan Design Week 2026, Gallotti & Radice reintroduced the T35 Trio coffee table in a version featuring brushed Silver Travertine<\/strong>, while other brands continue to use the stone for contemporary tables and furniture.<\/p>\n

The design appeal is clear: travertine has a surface capable of appearing both geometric and irregular<\/strong>. It can cover highly minimal volumes without becoming anonymous because its stratification, pores and tonal variations prevent the surface from appearing perfectly uniform.<\/p>\n

Vein-cut and cross-cut travertine: how the cut changes the pattern<\/h2>\n

Even before the finish is considered, the way the block is cut determines the appearance of the slab.<\/p>\n

A vein cut<\/strong> is made perpendicular to the stone’s natural bedding planes. The Natural Stone Institute defines it as a cut that exposes the veining of the material; on travertine slabs it produces the characteristic linear pattern of more or less parallel bands.<\/p>\n

A cross cut<\/strong>, by contrast, is made parallel to the bedding. The result tends to be more varied, clouded and organic because the section intersects the layers differently. The design difference is substantial. Vein-cut travertine installed vertically can emphasise the height of a wall; laid horizontally, it reinforces the direction of a counter or long piece of furniture. Cross cut creates a less directional background and can work well when a calmer surface is required.<\/p>\n

There is therefore no single universal \u201ctravertine pattern\u201d: the same stone can change character according to the way it is cut<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Beige, ivory, grey and red: the colours of travertine<\/h2>\n

Pale beige remains the most familiar image, but the colour range is considerably broader.<\/p>\n

The Natural Stone Institute records white, cream, yellow, pink, brown and reddish travertines. Within Italian production, Margraf describes Travertino Romano Classico<\/strong> as hazelnut beige with white veining, Travertino Navona<\/strong> as having an ivory-white background with natural cavities, and Travertino Silver<\/strong> within the grey colour range. Salvatori also uses Travertino Rosso, with variations ranging from softer red tones to more saturated shades.<\/p>\n

These names identify specific selections and origins: they should not be treated as a standardised colour chart<\/strong>. Even stone from the same quarry can show significant variation. The Natural Stone Institute therefore recommends assessing a range of samples and, for larger supplies, considering colour, movement, texture and the presence of voids before installation.<\/p>\n

Open-pore or filled travertine: what really changes?<\/h2>\n

\u201cOpen pore\u201d and \u201cclosed pore\u201d are terms frequently used in commercial language, but it is more accurate to distinguish between unfilled<\/strong> and filled<\/strong> travertine.<\/p>\n

In the first case, cavities that reach the surface remain visible. The stone acquires a more pronounced, three-dimensional texture that can be particularly effective on walls and vertical surfaces.<\/p>\n

In the second, surface voids are filled, generally with cementitious or resin-based materials, and then brought flush with the face of the stone. The result is a more uniform surface that is easier to manage where cleaning and frequent contact are important.<\/p>\n

The choice is not purely aesthetic. A table, floor or worktop used every day presents different requirements from a decorative wall. Architectural Digest<\/em>, drawing on the experience of designers who work with the material, also notes the distinction between unfilled travertine used to emphasise texture and filled surfaces chosen when greater practicality is required.<\/p>\n

Honed, brushed or polished travertine: which finish should you choose?<\/h2>\n

The finish affects both the appearance and the surface behaviour of the stone.<\/p>\n

Salvatori defines honing<\/strong> as a smooth, predominantly matt finish, while polishing produces a glossy surface. Brushing, sandblasting and bush hammering introduce different degrees of texture, with the latter creating a distinctly more irregular surface. Margraf also confirms that Travertino Romano Classico is available in polished, honed, brushed, bush-hammered and sandblasted finishes.<\/p>\n

In contemporary interiors, honing is particularly effective because it allows the material to remain clearly legible without turning it into an overly reflective surface.<\/p>\n

Floors and walls: using travertine as an architectural material<\/h2>\n

On floors, the direction of the veining and the arrangement of the slabs can become part of the room’s design. A continuous vein-cut installation can establish a strong axis, while cross cut produces a more uniform field.<\/p>\n

It is important to remember, however, that this is natural stone with genuine variations<\/strong>. Ordering from a single sample tile and expecting the entire supply to look identical is one of the most common mistakes. The Natural Stone Institute explicitly recommends examining a range of samples and mixing material from different pallets during installation.<\/p>\n

On walls, open pores, continuous veining and strongly textured finishes can be used more freely. Travertine then stops behaving as a simple wall covering and becomes an architectural surface that responds to light.<\/p>\n

Travertine in bathrooms: walls, washbasins and continuous surfaces<\/h2>\n

The bathroom is one of the spaces where travertine can express its sense of continuity most effectively. Walls, floors, washbasins and bathtubs can all be designed in the same material, with the cut and surface finish varied where appropriate.<\/p>\n

Its use is also widely documented in hospitality projects: at Six Senses Rome, for example, Travertino Romano Classico has been used on the walls of the tepidarium, in shaped portals and in fluted wall coverings.<\/p>\n

This does not mean that every finish is automatically suitable for a wet area. Slip resistance, treatment, installation and maintenance must be checked for the specific product<\/strong>. A sandblasted or textured surface can behave very differently from polished stone.<\/p>\n

Travertine in kitchens: beautiful, but acid sensitivity matters<\/h2>\n

The kitchen is where the distinction between appearance and performance becomes particularly important.<\/p>\n

Travertine, marble and many limestones are calcium-carbonate-based materials and are therefore sensitive to acids<\/strong>. Lemon juice, vinegar and other acidic substances can react with the stone and cause etching: a dulling or alteration of the surface that is not necessarily an absorbed stain, but a genuine chemical change to the finish.<\/p>\n

For this reason, a travertine kitchen worktop requires greater awareness than less acid-sensitive materials. It can be used if a developing patina and appropriate maintenance are accepted, or it can be reserved for backsplashes, island bases, tables and elements less exposed to everyday food preparation<\/strong>. The Natural Stone Institute specifically advises careful consideration when limestone and travertine are used for countertops because of absorption and acid sensitivity.<\/p>\n

Travertine tables and furniture: when stone becomes volume<\/h2>\n

Contemporary travertine works particularly well when it moves from surface to volume.<\/p>\n

Tables with monolithic bases, low coffee tables, consoles, bedside tables and washbasins use the mass of the stone to create simple, sculptural forms. Cavities and veining prevent these geometric volumes from becoming excessively severe.<\/p>\n

Here too, the choice of cut becomes decisive: a vein-cut table can turn stratification into a continuous graphic feature, while cross cut creates a more uniform image. In 2026, travertine’s presence in furniture design is still documented by collections presented during Milan Design Week and by new projects combining natural stone with glass, metal and wood.<\/p>\n

How to combine travertine without creating an all-beige interior<\/h2>\n

Travertine and pale oak may be the most immediate pairing, but it is not necessarily the most interesting.<\/p>\n

With walnut or darker woods<\/strong>, beige travertine gains greater depth. Beside stainless steel, its mineral character becomes sharper and more contemporary. Bronze and brass, by contrast, warm cream-coloured varieties. Colours such as olive green, brick red, deep blue and brown can create contrast without diminishing the natural quality of the material.<\/p>\n

Salvatori, for example, explicitly pairs Light Travertine with brick tones, demonstrating how natural stone and more saturated colours can coexist without neutralising one another.<\/p>\n

The key is to avoid turning the material into a formula: travertine + boucl\u00e9 + beige + pale wood<\/strong> is far from the only possible approach.<\/p>\n

Stains, acids and maintenance: how to care for travertine properly<\/h2>\n

Everyday maintenance should begin with an understanding of the stone’s chemistry.<\/p>\n

The Natural Stone Institute recommends neutral cleaners or products specifically formulated for natural stone and advises against vinegar, lemon and acidic detergents. On floors, dust, sand and abrasive particles should be removed regularly because they can scratch the surface. When liquids are spilled, it is preferable to blot them quickly rather than spread the contaminant across the stone.<\/p>\n

An impregnating treatment can improve resistance to the absorption of water and oily substances, but it does not make travertine stain-proof and, above all, does not prevent acid etching<\/strong>. The Natural Stone Institute is clear on this point: so-called sealers primarily work as repellents and make the stone more resistant to staining, rather than making it waterproof or chemically impervious.<\/p>\n

The frequency of any protective treatments should therefore not be determined by a universal rule: it depends on the stone, the product applied, the level of use and the recommendations of the manufacturer or supplier.<\/p>\n

Mistakes to avoid when choosing travertine<\/h2>\n

The first is treating pores and variations as defects that must automatically be removed<\/strong>. They are part of the nature of the material; the design should determine how much of them to reveal.<\/p>\n

The second is choosing the stone from a sample that is too small. Colour, veining and the amount of natural cavities can vary significantly even within the same selection.<\/p>\n

The third is ignoring the difference between vein cut and cross cut: it can affect the final result more dramatically than the colour itself.<\/p>\n

The fourth is choosing a finish purely for photographic appeal. A floor, wall, shower and table all require different performance characteristics.<\/p>\n

The fifth is assuming that an impregnating treatment will solve every problem in the kitchen. Staining and etching are different phenomena<\/strong>: a treatment can slow absorption, but it cannot prevent an acid from reacting with calcium carbonate.<\/p>\n

Travertine works in contemporary interiors precisely when these characteristics are accepted and incorporated into the design. Its value does not lie in being a perfectly uniform and neutral surface, but in its ability to bring layers, tonal variations, cavities and traces of its natural formation<\/strong> into architecture.
