Vico Magistretti<\/strong> is one of the designers who best illustrates Italian design’s ability to transform very simple ideas into objects of remarkable effectiveness, durability and recognisability. An architect before becoming a designer, he approached houses, public buildings, furniture and lighting with the same attitude: reducing a project to a strong, understandable and technically coherent concept<\/strong>. Carimate emerged from an architectural project; Eclisse controls light through an elementary movement; Maralunga hides a mechanism inside a reassuringly domestic sofa; Atollo constructs a lamp from three essential geometries. In his work, simplicity is the result of a long process of selection rather than the starting point.<\/p>\n

Vico Magistretti: biography between architecture and design<\/h2>\n

Ludovico \u201cVico\u201d Magistretti was born in Milan on 6 October 1920<\/strong> into a family with several generations of architectural experience. He enrolled at the Faculty of Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano in 1939; after 8 September 1943, he left Italy and continued his studies in Switzerland, where he met Ernesto Nathan Rogers, a figure who would play an important role in his education. Returning to Milan, he graduated on 2 August 1945 and began working in the studio of his father, Pier Giulio, who had died a few months earlier.<\/p>\n

His first professional years coincided with post-war reconstruction. Magistretti took part in exhibitions, installations and experimental programmes connected with the Triennale, while Milanese architecture searched for new models for housing, public services and the city. At the VIII Triennale, he participated in the QT8<\/strong> project, where, together with Mario Tedeschi, he would also develop the church of Santa Maria Nascente, built between 1953 and 1955.<\/p>\n

During the 1950s, he emerged as one of the leading figures of the so-called \u201cthird generation\u201d of Italian modern architecture. In 1956, he was also among the promoters of ADI, the Association for Industrial Design. From that point onwards, his work moved increasingly freely between architecture and product design, making the two fields difficult to separate completely.<\/p>\n

Post-war Milan: architecture as a laboratory for design<\/h2>\n

Before his most celebrated lamps and furniture, Magistretti’s method took shape through architecture.<\/p>\n

The Torre al Parco Sempione<\/strong>, built in Milan between 1953 and 1956 with Franco Longoni, organises large apartments around terraces and verandas that carve into the corners of the building and animate its fa\u00e7ades. It is not a tower conceived as a purely abstract volume: interior layout, views and fa\u00e7ade remain closely interconnected.<\/p>\n

At almost the same time, Magistretti designed the office building at Corso Europa 22<\/strong>, designed and built between 1955 and 1957. Its fa\u00e7ade derives from a precise relationship between the vertical structure, aluminium window frames and the possibility of organising internal partitions freely: once again, what appears on the exterior emerges from a functional and constructional issue.<\/p>\n

It is a principle that would return continuously in his furniture: form does not have to explain everything, but it should derive from an idea strong enough to hold together use, construction and image.<\/p>\n

The Magistretti method: an idea clear enough to explain over the telephone<\/h2>\n

The Fondazione Vico Magistretti built an exhibition around one of the best-known aspects of his method: the designer said he loved concept design<\/strong>, meaning ideas so clear that they could be communicated even without a complex drawing, potentially even over the telephone.<\/p>\n

Behind this apparent immediacy, however, there was no improvisation.<\/p>\n

Eclisse begins with the principle of a lantern that can be screened; Maralunga uses a bicycle chain as its mechanical intuition; the Vidun table develops around the image of a screw; Kuta recalls the gesture of a fan. The Foundation uses these examples to show how Magistretti observed ordinary objects and everyday mechanisms<\/strong>, reworking them until they became essential design concepts.<\/p>\n

Simplicity therefore becomes a form of selection. Mechanisms, materials and geometries are reduced until only what is genuinely necessary for the function and recognisability of the object remains.<\/p>\n

Carimate: when furniture emerges directly from architecture<\/h2>\n

\"Carimate<\/p>\n

The Carimate chair<\/strong> is one of the clearest examples of the relationship between architecture and industrial design in Vico Magistretti’s work.<\/p>\n

The design dates from 1959<\/strong> and is linked to the Club House of the Golf Club in Carimate, designed with Guido Veneziani and built between 1958 and 1961. The chair was originally conceived for the restaurant within the complex.<\/p>\n

Magistretti began with two apparently distant references: Scandinavian tradition and the popular Italian wood-and-straw chair. The result retains an immediately legible structure, with a woven seat and legs that increase in section at their most highly stressed points. The use of red aniline dye<\/strong>, a colour also echoed in the architecture’s windows and columns, reinforced the relationship with the Golf Club.<\/p>\n

Its production history is significant because it marks the transition from a piece designed for a specific interior to serial production. The Foundation identifies Carimate as Magistretti’s first industrial product and documents subsequent productions and re-editions, culminating in the Fritz Hansen version introduced in 2020.<\/p>\n

Carimate therefore demonstrates one of the defining characteristics of his work: an object can emerge from a building and later become completely independent from it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Eclisse: controlling light with a single movement<\/h2>\n

\"Eclisse<\/p>\n

With Eclisse<\/strong>, designed for Artemide in 1965<\/strong>, Magistretti reduced the control of light to an extremely intuitive gesture.<\/p>\n

The lamp features a fixed outer shell and a movable inner shade. By rotating the latter, the light source is progressively covered, producing either direct or more diffused illumination. The name itself describes the behaviour of the object: the bulb is \u201ceclipsed\u201d.<\/p>\n

The 1967 Compasso d’Oro<\/strong> recognised precisely this combination of design quality, potential for widespread use and the novelty of a technical solution based on the simple movement of the shade.<\/p>\n

What makes Eclisse particularly representative of Magistretti’s method is the way function almost completely coincides with its image. No complex controls or visible mechanism are required: the form of the lamp directly suggests how it should be used<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In 2026, Eclisse remains part of the Artemide collection, including contemporary finishes, while preserving its original design principle.<\/p>\n

Selene: when plastic becomes structure<\/h2>\n

\"Selene<\/p>\n

Even when working with innovative industrial materials, Magistretti avoided using technology as decoration.<\/p>\n

The Selene chair<\/strong>, designed in 1966 and produced by Artemide from 1969, emerged from the challenge of creating a one-piece plastic chair without relying on visually heavy sections. The solution came through geometry: the legs adopt an S-shaped section<\/strong> capable of stiffening a sheet of material only three millimetres thick.<\/p>\n

The interest of the project therefore lies in more than simply its use of plastic. Magistretti exploits a property of form to solve a structural requirement, making technique and design coincide.<\/p>\n

The Foundation considers Selene one of the most significant examples of his research into \u201cstrength through form\u201d, while Artemide recalls it as one of the first stackable plastic chairs developed using compression-moulding technology.<\/p>\n

Its story also continues in the present: Artemide’s 2026 documentation notes the re-edition of Selene by Danese Milano<\/strong> after a long period out of production.<\/p>\n

Maralunga: when comfort becomes an invisible mechanism<\/h2>\n

\"Maralunga<\/p>\n

In 1973<\/strong>, Vico Magistretti designed Maralunga<\/strong> for Cassina, one of the most recognisable sofas in late twentieth-century Italian design.<\/p>\n

Its innovation lies in the backrest: an integrated mechanism allows it to move from a lower position, suited to conversation, to a higher and more enveloping configuration. Cassina documents the use of a bicycle chain incorporated into the structure<\/strong> as the principle behind the patented system.<\/p>\n

The difference from many technological experiments of the period is clear. The mechanism never becomes the visual focus.<\/p>\n

Maralunga appears soft, domestic and almost reassuring. Innovation is concealed within comfort<\/strong>. It is a distinctly Magistretti solution: improving the behaviour of an object without forcing its appearance to continually declare its technology.<\/p>\n

The design received the Compasso d’Oro in 1979<\/strong>. Cassina continues to include it in its collection and, in 2024, updated the mechanism through research carried out in collaboration with the Fondazione Magistretti.<\/p>\n

Atollo: cylinder, cone and hemisphere become a lamp<\/h2>\n

If Eclisse begins with a gesture, Atollo<\/strong> emerges almost entirely from geometry.<\/p>\n

Designed for Oluce in 1977<\/strong>, the lamp is constructed through the meeting of a cylinder, cone and hemisphere<\/strong>. The dome eliminates the traditional image of a lampshade built around a frame and fabric, appearing instead to rest on the support below through an extremely controlled balance.<\/p>\n

Atollo received the Compasso d’Oro in 1979<\/strong>, the same year in which Maralunga was awarded.<\/p>\n

Its essential character becomes particularly significant when considered within Magistretti’s professional relationship with Oluce. From 1973 to 1979, Magistretti was the company’s art director and principal designer<\/strong>, developing projects including Snow, Sonora, Atollo and Pascal.<\/p>\n

Atollo demonstrates how strongly Magistretti could establish identity using very few elements. It is not minimal because it lacks character: it is recognisable precisely because every geometric element has a specific role.<\/p>\n

In 2026, Oluce continues to produce Atollo in metal and opaline glass versions, confirming the industrial longevity of the design.<\/p>\n

Nuvola Rossa: simplifying a bookcase by removing its side panels<\/h2>\n

With Nuvola Rossa<\/strong>, designed for Cassina in 1977<\/strong>, Magistretti addressed an almost archetypal furniture type: the shelving bookcase.<\/p>\n

The decisive change concerns the structure. Diagonal bracing assumes a load-bearing role and supports the shelves, allowing the traditional side panels to be eliminated. The bookcase is also foldable and can be used as a room divider.<\/p>\n

It is an exceptionally clear example of function simplified through construction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

No detail is added simply to make the furniture appear original; instead, part of the traditional typology is removed because another element can perform its function. Its recognisability derives directly from this decision.<\/p>\n

Cassina continues to include Nuvola Rossa in its collection in 2026, with versions in beech and Canaletto walnut.<\/p>\n

Vico Magistretti’s architecture also explains his furniture<\/h2>\n

Looking only at his product design risks making Magistretti appear more interested in form than he actually was.<\/p>\n

In the church of Santa Maria Nascente at QT8<\/strong>, designed with Mario Tedeschi and built between 1953 and 1955, the circular plan is inserted into a polygonal layout that generates porticoes and carefully calibrated relationships between the main volume, structure and masonry.<\/p>\n

At Torre al Parco, terraces and voids modify the volume in response to the internal spaces. At the Golf Club in Carimate, the layout follows the terrain and existing trees, while the interiors are organised according to a precise structural grid; it was from this building that the Carimate chair would emerge.<\/p>\n

At the urban scale, the Milano San Felice district<\/strong>, designed with Luigi Caccia Dominioni from 1966 onwards, organises housing, pedestrian routes, roads and green spaces through a clear spatial hierarchy.<\/p>\n

Architecture and design therefore follow analogous processes: identify the problem, establish a rule and allow that rule to shape the project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Magistretti and industry: design as a dialogue with manufacturers<\/h2>\n

Another fundamental aspect of his career is his relationship with manufacturers.<\/p>\n

The Foundation recalls how Magistretti regarded Italian Design as the result of an encounter between architects, industry and craftsmanship<\/strong>. From the 1960s onwards, he collaborated with companies including Artemide, Cassina and Gavina; later, his work involved brands such as Oluce, De Padova, Kartell, Campeggi and Fritz Hansen.<\/p>\n

He did not simply design an object and then look for someone capable of producing it. Dialogue with industry formed part of the very definition of the product.<\/p>\n

The transition of Carimate from crafted piece to serial production, the development of plastic with Artemide, the Maralunga mechanism with Cassina and his work on light with Oluce all demonstrate different versions of the same relationship.<\/p>\n

For Magistretti, design acquired meaning through production for many people<\/strong>, rather than through the exceptional nature of a unique piece.<\/p>\n

Why Vico Magistretti remains relevant in 2026<\/h2>\n

The continued production of Eclisse, Maralunga, Atollo and Nuvola Rossa would already be enough to demonstrate how far some of his designs have outlived the context in which they were created. Yet the most interesting part of his legacy concerns his method.<\/p>\n

In 1994, ADI awarded him the Compasso d’Oro for Lifetime Achievement<\/strong>, recognising a body of work in which it could be difficult to distinguish gradual evolution from radical innovation. Overall, Magistretti received three Compasso d’Oro awards for products \u2014 Eclisse, Maralunga and Atollo \u2014 in addition to the career award.<\/p>\n

His idea of simplicity remains especially contemporary because it does not depend on a particular minimalist aesthetic.<\/p>\n

Eclisse can be colourful. Maralunga is deliberately soft. Carimate engages with a rural tradition. Atollo has an almost monumental presence.<\/p>\n

What connects them is something else: every design can be traced back to a central idea that is remarkably easy to understand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It is this conceptual precision that keeps Vico Magistretti’s work so legible today. Architecture, furniture and lighting change in scale, materials and technology, but the principle remains constant: removing complications until function and form appear almost inevitable.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
