Antonio Citterio<\/strong> has built a career that is difficult to understand by separating furniture, interiors and architecture. From seating systems for B&B Italia and Flexform to armchairs developed with Vitra and hotels designed by ACPV ARCHITECTS with Patricia Viel, a consistent method emerges based on proportion, use, technical precision and continuity over time. The luxury expressed through his projects rarely depends on spectacle: it appears in the quality of space, the choice of materials, the possibility of using an object for many years and the ability of detail to remain discreet<\/strong>. This approach helps explain why many of his products have endured for decades without depending on a single aesthetic moment.<\/p>\n

Antonio Citterio: from industrial design to architecture<\/h2>\n

Antonio Citterio was born in Meda in 1950<\/strong>, opened his own studio in 1972 and graduated in Architecture from the Politecnico di Milano in 1975. Between 1972 and 1981, he worked primarily in industrial design in partnership with Paolo Nava, alongside his activities in architecture and interiors. Between 1986 and 1996, he collaborated with architect Terry Dwan on buildings completed in Europe and Japan.<\/p>\n

Patricia Viel began collaborating with Citterio in 1986. In 2000, the two founded Antonio Citterio and Partners, which later became Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel and Partners and is now ACPV ARCHITECTS Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel<\/strong>. In 2026, ACPV is an international practice with more than 230 professionals and 14 partners; Citterio is Chairman and co-founder, while Viel is co-founder and a member of the board. This collective dimension is important when discussing the studio\u2019s more recent projects: it would be inaccurate to attribute individually to Citterio buildings developed by multidisciplinary teams and responsible partners.<\/p>\n

His work in industrial design has continued in parallel. He received the Compasso d\u2019Oro in 1987 and 1994, as well as the Compasso d\u2019Oro for Lifetime Achievement in 2022; from 2006 to 2016, he taught Architectural Design at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, and in 2008 he was appointed Royal Designer for Industry by the British Royal Society of Arts.<\/p>\n

Citterio\u2019s method begins with use, not image<\/h2>\n

To understand Citterio\u2019s work, it is useful to notice how often his products are conceived as systems<\/strong> rather than isolated forms.<\/p>\n

A sofa can organise different domestic behaviours; an office chair must adapt to different people and configurations; a hotel interior is designed as a sequence of spaces, materials and everyday gestures. Form emerges within this organisation and tends to avoid an identity that depends too heavily on visual effect.<\/p>\n

This approach is particularly evident in his long relationship with Vitra, which began in 1988. The company describes the collaboration through office seating and systems as well as products for the Home Collection. In 2026, that relationship continues, with Vitra itself presenting the \u201cCitterio Collection\u201d as a family that is still evolving.<\/p>\n

Something similar happens with B&B Italia and Flexform. A product is not designed simply to be viewed from the front, but to alter the organisation of space and accompany changing behaviours. This is a far more useful key to understanding his work than the generic label of \u201cItalian elegance\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sity: the sofa as a system for living<\/h2>\n

In 1986, Citterio designed Sity for B&B Italia<\/strong>. Its importance was recognised the following year with the ADI Compasso d\u2019Oro.<\/p>\n

Sity challenges the traditional sofa as a static, frontal element. It introduces island configurations, different seat depths and chaise longues, coordinating more than twenty components in a system capable of organising circulation, conversation and different activities within the living room. Citterio\u2019s own documentation describes it as a response to observing everyday life: sitting, eating, watching television or writing do not necessarily require separate pieces of furniture.<\/p>\n

The Compasso d\u2019Oro citation is significant because it describes a product that is \u201ctypologically advanced\u201d in relation to changing domestic behaviours. The value of Sity therefore lies in more than a recognisable image: the transformation of furniture follows the transformation of the way people live<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Mobil: flexibility between office and home<\/h2>\n

\"Mobil<\/p>\n

Citterio\u2019s second Compasso d\u2019Oro came in 1994 with Mobil<\/strong>, the Kartell drawer storage system designed by Antonio Citterio with Glen Oliver L\u00f6w.<\/p>\n

The joint attribution is essential here. ADI credits both designers and, in the award citation, highlights the coherence between the metal structure and the translucent and coloured plastic drawers, together with the flexibility of the system for the workplace.<\/p>\n

Kartell still includes Mobil in its collection in 2026, offering a version made from recycled material derived from industrial waste. The structure combines drawers, shelves and tops connected by aluminium elements, and over time the product has moved beyond the strictly office environment, finding applications in bedrooms, living rooms and bathrooms as well.<\/p>\n

It is a useful example because it shows how Citterio\u2019s work can be technical without becoming technocratic: castors, uprights, drawers and modularity remain legible, while the construction is controlled to create a visually ordered object.<\/p>\n

Charles: lightness as a way of shaping the living room<\/h2>\n

With the 1997 Charles sofa for B&B Italia<\/strong>, the seating system reaches one of its most enduring expressions.<\/p>\n

The sofa is recognisable for its visually slender structure and inverted \u201cL\u201d-shaped die-cast aluminium feet, combined with a single seat cushion and loose back cushions. Yet the most important aspect is once again spatial: linear elements, chaise longues and corner modules make it possible to create different configurations without losing the project\u2019s sense of lightness.<\/p>\n

B&B Italia notes that Charles became one of its long-standing bestsellers. Its name explicitly refers to Charles Eames: Citterio has explained that he is interested in acknowledging references to the masters without literally copying their forms.<\/p>\n

This statement also clarifies part of his method. Longevity does not necessarily require neutrality<\/strong>, but rather a form precise enough to be recognisable and open enough to accommodate changes in fabrics, configurations and contexts.<\/p>\n

Groundpiece: when the sofa incorporates new functions<\/h2>\n

\"Groundpiece<\/p>\n

Groundpiece<\/strong>, designed for Flexform in 2001, develops the theme further.<\/p>\n

It is low, deep and deliberately less formal than the conventional sitting room sofa. Flexform directly connects its proportions to changes in how sofas are used: people relax, read, watch television, work on a computer and sometimes eat there. This observation also led to the possibility of replacing sections of the armrest with metal storage elements covered in leather, which can function as surfaces and bookcases.<\/p>\n

It is a particularly representative solution for understanding Citterio\u2019s approach to comfort. Comfort does not simply mean adding more upholstery. It means allowing a piece of furniture to perform several roles without losing compositional order<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

More than twenty years after its introduction, Flexform continues to present Groundpiece as one of the central designs in its collection. Its longevity is particularly interesting because it derives from a typology capable of absorbing different ways of living.<\/p>\n

Grand Repos: technology can disappear into comfort<\/h2>\n

The collaboration with Vitra allows the same method to be observed at a different scale.<\/p>\n

The 2011 Grand Repos<\/strong> is a swivel lounge chair equipped with a synchronised mechanism concealed beneath the upholstery. It allows the user to move from an upright to a reclining position and lock the backrest at different angles; the resistance can also be adjusted according to the user\u2019s weight.<\/p>\n

The design point lies precisely in the discretion of the technology. The mechanism is not turned into the main visual argument of the chair: it remains integrated, while the form retains the presence of an upholstered and protective lounge chair.<\/p>\n

In Vitra\u2019s current catalogue, Repos and Grand Repos continue to be updated in terms of materials, with recyclable V-Foam upholstery and internal plastic components made largely from recycled material. In this case, the longevity of a product does not necessarily mean technical immobility.<\/p>\n

Kelvin: light as part of the interior<\/h2>\n

Citterio\u2019s collaboration with Flos likewise demonstrates his preference for objects with a legible construction.<\/p>\n

The 2009 Kelvin LED Base<\/strong> is credited by Flos to Antonio Citterio, with Toan Nguyen listed as assistant. The lamp uses a double pantograph arm, an adjustable head and an aluminium structure, with its electronics integrated into a design reduced to essential elements.<\/p>\n

When Flos asked Citterio what artificial light meant to him, he answered simply: \u201can interior\u201d. It is a brief formulation, but one that is consistent with his work: a light fitting is not considered solely as a decorative object because light directly changes the perception of space.<\/p>\n

From product to interior design: Bulgari Hotel Milano<\/h2>\n

\"Bulgari<\/p>\n

The transition from furniture to interior design becomes particularly clear in the Bulgari Hotel Milano<\/strong>, completed in 2004 by the practice now known as ACPV ARCHITECTS.<\/p>\n

The project marked Bulgari\u2019s entry into hospitality and transformed a 1950s building in Milan\u2019s Brera district that was itself integrated with earlier historic structures. ACPV worked with conservation and adaptive reuse, shaping the interior through materials including teak, black Zimbabwe granite, stucco and patinated copper. The approximately 4,000-square-metre private garden became an integral part of the hotel experience.<\/p>\n

Bulgari describes the project through a balance between the rigour of space and the richness of atmosphere<\/strong>. It is a particularly effective definition for understanding the idea of luxury that emerges from the studio\u2019s work: stone, timber and metals may be precious, but the result depends above all on how proportions, materials, light, furniture and details are coordinated.<\/p>\n

In 2024, marking the hotel\u2019s twentieth anniversary, ACPV recalled that design control extended from the fa\u00e7ade to the door handles, from furniture to desk accessories, and even to glasses and textiles. Luxury therefore becomes continuity between scales<\/strong>, rather than an accumulation of exceptional elements.<\/p>\n

Bulgari Hotel Roma: working with history without turning it into decoration<\/h2>\n

Almost twenty years later, the 2023 Bulgari Hotel Roma<\/strong> takes the same research into a radically different context.<\/p>\n

The project occupies a Rationalist building designed by Vittorio Ballio Morpurgo and constructed between 1936 and 1938 in Piazza Augusto Imperatore. ACPV ARCHITECTS, with Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel as co-founders of the practice, worked on the transformation and restoration of the approximately 14,000-square-metre complex.<\/p>\n

The project retains the rigour of the existing building and sets it against textures, mosaics, custom fabrics, Venetian glass, marble and historic pieces. Here too, the interior does not attempt to compete with the architecture through an independent gesture. Instead, it constructs a sequence of materials and details capable of absorbing references to Rome and the identity of the brand.<\/p>\n

The contrast between Milan and Rome is revealing. There is no single \u201cBulgari Hotel style\u201d applied indiscriminately from one city to another: continuity lies in the method, while place, building and material culture alter the result<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

ACPV: contemporary architecture beyond hospitality<\/h2>\n

Limiting ACPV to luxury hotels would provide only a partial picture of the practice.<\/p>\n

In 2025, Casa Moncler<\/strong>, the brand\u2019s new headquarters, was completed in Milan: a 77,000-square-metre complex that reinterprets the industrial character of the area through new office architecture and an urban regeneration project. The project is attributed to ACPV ARCHITECTS, with Citterio and Viel as co-founders and a design team led by Mauro Novazzi.<\/p>\n

In 2026, the studio also completed Reply House in Turin<\/strong>, a 20,500-square-metre project combining existing heritage, a new corporate campus and urban regeneration. Here too, the official attribution identifies the co-founders, a responsible partner and a wider project team.<\/p>\n

These projects are useful because they show how the practice has evolved towards a collective model. Its architectural language can no longer be read exclusively through Citterio\u2019s individual authorship: ACPV now operates as an interdisciplinary structure<\/strong>, with shared governance, partners and research systems focused on materials, processes and design.<\/p>\n

What \u201cluxury\u201d really means in Antonio Citterio\u2019s work<\/h2>\n

Associating Citterio with luxury is almost inevitable when considering the Bulgari Hotels, international residences, Maxalto and numerous collaborations with high-end manufacturers. But the term becomes of little use if it refers only to expensive materials.<\/p>\n

In the most convincing projects, luxury appears instead as a reduction of friction between person, object and space<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A sofa accommodates different behaviours without requiring constant transformation. An armchair conceals its mechanism while adapting to the body. A hotel coordinates handle, light, furniture and architecture without allowing every element to claim autonomy. A material is selected not only for its initial appearance, but also for the way it can remain convincing over time.<\/p>\n

It is no coincidence that ACPV, describing its work today, states that it seeks what is \u201ctimeless rather than ephemeral\u201d and \u201cresponsible rather than extravagant\u201d<\/strong>. Although this is a programmatic statement by the studio rather than a universal definition of luxury, it effectively summarises its distance from design based on ostentation.<\/p>\n

Why Antonio Citterio remains relevant in 2026<\/h2>\n

In 2026, Citterio continues to work simultaneously within two very different structures: his activity as an industrial designer and his role as co-founder and Chairman of a large international architectural practice.<\/p>\n

The continuity between the two does not depend on using the same materials or repeating a recognisable form. Sity, Charles, Groundpiece, Grand Repos and the Bulgari Hotels do not resemble one another closely enough to create an easily imitated style.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What connects them is instead a way of designing.<\/p>\n

The product is conceived within the room. The interior is conceived as part of the architecture. Architecture is developed through materials, details, circulation and real behaviour. Elegance comes afterwards, as the result of controlling these relationships.<\/p>\n

This is probably the most enduring aspect of Antonio Citterio<\/strong>\u2019s work: demonstrating that contemporary sophistication can be extremely precise without becoming ostentatious, and that a design intended to last must be capable of changing context without losing its underlying logic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
