A kitchen without wall cabinets<\/strong> frees up the upper part of the walls and can make the space feel more open, brighter and more closely connected to the language of the living area. Simply removing suspended cabinets from a traditional kitchen layout, however, is not enough. Wall cabinets store tableware and food, can house the extractor hood and often provide a support for worktop lighting. Removing them therefore means rethinking storage, extraction, electrical sockets, lighting and appliance distribution<\/strong>. The most convincing solutions move these functions into base units, a wall of tall cabinets, a pantry or the island. When this balance is missing, the kitchen may look lighter in photographs but become less practical in everyday use.<\/p>\n

Why choose a kitchen without wall cabinets?<\/h2>\n

The most obvious reason is visual.<\/p>\n

A row of wall cabinets occupies the part of the wall most closely aligned with the field of vision. Removing it creates more free surface and allows the kitchen to be perceived less as a block of cabinetry and more as part of the architecture.<\/p>\n

The advantage becomes particularly tangible when there are windows, views outdoors or materials above the worktop that are worth keeping visually exposed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At Villa de VOID by Atelier ITCH, for example, the architects removed the wall cabinets from the kitchen specifically to preserve natural light and the view towards the new bamboo backdrop beyond the window. Storage capacity was not simply sacrificed: the entire side wall was transformed into storage and also accommodates the refrigerator.<\/p>\n

Michael Graves had already used the same principle in a house in New Jersey, where the absence of upper cabinets above the worktop was intended to maximise light and views. These examples are far apart in time, but they clarify the same idea: removing wall cabinets makes sense when it reveals something worth seeing or experiencing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The real advantages: more light, longer sightlines and less visual weight<\/h2>\n

The feeling of greater lightness does not come from the kitchen containing fewer objects, but from where those objects are concentrated.<\/p>\n

By moving storage away from the zone above the worktop and concentrating it in a few vertical volumes, the working wall can become more continuous. Stone cladding can be read in its entirety; a window can become part of the composition; a plastered wall can visually connect kitchen and living room more closely.<\/p>\n

The perception of the worktop also changes. In its research into ergonomics, Valcucine notes that wall cabinets can reduce the sense of openness and visibility of the work area. The same manufacturer has developed systems with deeper worktops specifically to increase usable surface area and accessibility, demonstrating that the relationship between base-unit depth and upper volume<\/strong> can be reconsidered in ways that differ from a conventional kitchen.<\/p>\n

The advantage is particularly clear in open-plan interiors: with fewer suspended cabinets, the kitchen can share height, materials and sightlines with the living area without immediately presenting itself as a technical wall.<\/p>\n

The main disadvantage is simple: you lose storage space<\/h2>\n

A kitchen without wall cabinets does not magically create storage elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Plates, glasses, cups, food, small appliances and utensils that would normally be stored in upper cabinets need to be relocated.<\/p>\n

This should be checked before finishes and colours are even selected. It is useful to take stock of what genuinely needs to be stored in the kitchen and understand how much capacity can be assigned to base units and tall cabinets.<\/p>\n

Lower pull-outs can provide good accessibility because their contents can be viewed from above. Blum applies the same principle to its pantry systems: in its SPACE TOWER documentation, it recommends shelves in higher zones, which are easier to see from the front, and pull-outs lower down, where contents can be read more easily from above.<\/p>\n

A kitchen without wall cabinets therefore works best when storage is redesigned rather than simply reduced<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Tall units and pantries become the real engine of the layout<\/h2>\n

One of the most effective strategies is to concentrate the refrigerator, ovens, food storage and small appliances within a wall of tall units.<\/p>\n

At first, this may seem contradictory: volume is removed from above the worktop only to create a full-height wall elsewhere. Perceptually, however, concentrating visual weight in one zone allows the remaining walls to stay much freer.<\/p>\n

Arclinea uses this logic across several systems. The Beta kitchen combines a continuous working area with a wall of tall units equipped with the New Pocket System<\/strong>, capable of housing the refrigerator, pantry and additional work surfaces concealed behind pocket doors. The Convivium system follows a similar strategy, concentrating storage, built-in cooking appliances and working functions within a large fitted wall beside the island.<\/p>\n

Valcucine, meanwhile, offers tall units with retracting doors that can contain utensils, small appliances and, depending on the configuration, even a pull-out preparation surface.<\/p>\n

These solutions clearly show the design consequence of removing wall cabinets: the tall-unit wall stops being an accessory and becomes the kitchen\u2019s infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Base units can do much more, but they need to be organised properly<\/h2>\n

In a traditional kitchen, a significant proportion of tableware is stored above the worktop. Without wall cabinets, plates and glasses can move into deep drawers and pull-outs.<\/p>\n

A lower position is not necessarily less ergonomic if the interior is fully extractable and organised by function. A large deep cabinet with fixed shelves is less effective, because objects stored at the back become harder to reach.<\/p>\n

Depth can also be used as a resource. Within its own systems, for example, Valcucine offers 65 cm worktops and 80 cm configurations that integrate channels and storage elements behind the main working area. These dimensions refer to specific products rather than universal rules, but they show how a kitchen that has lost part of its upper storage can regain functionality horizontally and within the working surface itself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The same principle applies to islands and peninsulas: rather than simply increasing their volume, it is often more effective to use both sides when the layout allows accessible openings.<\/p>\n

Shelves can work, but not if they recreate wall cabinets without doors<\/h2>\n

One or two shelves can give rhythm to a large open wall and keep glasses, ceramics or frequently used objects within easy reach.<\/p>\n

Filling the entire wall with shelving, however, effectively rebuilds the volume that has just been removed, with one additional drawback: everything remains visible.<\/p>\n

A shelf works best as a selective element<\/strong>, not as a complete storage system.<\/p>\n

It can also take on technical functions. Arclinea, for example, integrates LED lighting, electrical sockets and suspended accessories into its Mensolinea system. It is an interesting case because it shows how an element far slimmer than a wall cabinet can restore some of the functions usually assigned to upper cabinetry.<\/p>\n

In a heavily used kitchen, however, maintenance also needs to be considered: everything left exposed requires more order and cleaning than items stored behind a door.<\/p>\n

Leaving the wall free means deciding what the wall should do<\/h2>\n

Once the wall cabinets have been removed, there is no need to fill the empty space immediately.<\/p>\n

The wall can remain almost entirely free, particularly when the cladding material already has sufficient visual character. Natural stone, stainless steel, tiles, textured plaster or a window can become the kitchen\u2019s main vertical element.<\/p>\n

It is important, however, to distinguish between a visually free wall and a technically unprotected wall<\/strong>. In areas exposed to splashes, steam and frequent cleaning, the material still needs to be suitable for its intended use.<\/p>\n

Sockets and controls also need to be resolved during the design phase. Without wall cabinets and under-cabinet zones, electrical outlets can be integrated into the wall, splashback, a technical shelf or systems built into the worktop, depending on the installation and product selected.<\/p>\n

It is one of those details that almost disappears in finished photographs but determines how usable the kitchen remains in practice.<\/p>\n

The extractor hood is the design issue that cannot disappear with the wall cabinets<\/h2>\n

Removing upper cabinetry does not remove the need to manage steam, grease and odours produced during cooking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The extractor can become a visible element on the wall, hang above an island, be integrated into the ceiling or move extraction directly into the hob.<\/p>\n

BORA\u2019s 2026 guide distinguishes between wall-mounted, island, ceiling-mounted and integrated cooktop extraction systems. The latter keep the upper field of view completely clear and are therefore particularly compatible with kitchens without wall cabinets.<\/p>\n

This does not mean they are always the best solution. Extracting air outside and recirculating it have different consequences.<\/p>\n

With exhaust-air systems, air is channelled outdoors through ducting and an opening in the building envelope. With recirculation systems, air is filtered and returned to the room; BORA notes that in this configuration, moisture generated during cooking remains in the space and odour filters need to be replaced according to the product instructions.<\/p>\n

The extractor should therefore be selected together with the layout and building services<\/strong>, rather than at the end simply to avoid \u201cspoiling\u201d the empty wall.<\/p>\n

Removing wall cabinets also changes worktop lighting<\/h2>\n

Many traditional kitchens use the underside of wall cabinets as a natural place to install lighting close to the work surface.<\/p>\n

When the cabinet disappears, that support disappears with it.<\/p>\n

Relying exclusively on general ceiling lighting can create shadows precisely where food is being prepared, particularly when the person working stands between the light source and the worktop. Documentation from licht.de on residential lighting stresses the importance of specific task lighting for the work area and of avoiding strong shadows on the surface.<\/p>\n

Alternatives can include correctly positioned spotlights, track systems, technical pendants, adjustable wall lights, shelves with integrated lighting or luminous elements built into the splashback.<\/p>\n

Arclinea, for example, integrates LED profiles into functional shelves, while some Poliform systems incorporate lighting directly into equipped back panels.<\/p>\n

A free wall therefore requires more lighting design, not less<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A kitchen without wall cabinets in a small space: it can work, but not always<\/h2>\n

In a compact kitchen, removing wall cabinets can produce two opposite results.<\/p>\n

On one hand, it reduces the amount of cabinetry at eye level and can make the room feel less congested. On the other, it removes a valuable band of storage precisely where floor area is limited.<\/p>\n

A 700-square-foot apartment in Austin published by Architectural Digest, for example, uses a kitchen without upper cabinets and recovers capacity through base units organised with multiple levels of drawers. In another compact project, the Blue Terracotta Apartment by Rina Lovko, tableware storage was deliberately moved into lower cabinets.<\/p>\n

The solution therefore makes sense when the base units are sufficient or when there is at least one vertical zone available for pantry storage and appliances.<\/p>\n

If a very small linear kitchen has no tall units, pantry, island or other compensating storage, removing all wall cabinets can become a functional sacrifice that is difficult to justify<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In an open-plan space, a kitchen without wall cabinets integrates more easily with the living area<\/h2>\n

This is probably where the choice offers its clearest visual advantage.<\/p>\n

In a space where kitchen, dining and living areas share the same room, a long row of wall cabinets can strongly emphasise the working character of one wall. Reducing the composition to base units, worktop and a few vertical elements instead brings it closer to the language of a sideboard or fitted living-room wall.<\/p>\n

Storage can be transferred into a compact wall of tall cabinets, potentially using retracting doors to conceal small appliances and working surfaces as well.<\/p>\n

Arclinea explicitly describes its New Pocket System as a tool for integrating kitchen and living space by creating storage and working areas that can disappear behind doors.<\/p>\n

The kitchen can therefore become less visually prominent when it is not being used without necessarily sacrificing equipment.<\/p>\n

Which layout works best without wall cabinets?<\/h2>\n

There is no single ideal floor plan.<\/p>\n

A single-wall kitchen<\/strong> can work if there is an adjacent wall available for tall units or if storage requirements are limited.<\/p>\n

An L-shaped layout<\/strong> makes it possible to keep one wall free while concentrating tall units and appliances on the other.<\/p>\n

With a peninsula or island<\/strong>, a significant part of food preparation, washing or cooking can move into the centre of the room, while also increasing the volume available within the base units.<\/p>\n

In more complex projects, the island and fitted storage wall become the two main components: the first concentrates activities, while the second absorbs what needs to be stored or concealed. It is a recurring logic in contemporary compositions by Arclinea and Poliform, where large islands are combined with full-height units, pantries and equipped storage systems.<\/p>\n

The layout should begin with which functions need to be close to one another<\/strong>, not with an abstract desire to create an empty wall.<\/p>\n

When it is better not to give up wall cabinets<\/h2>\n

A kitchen without wall cabinets is not automatically more contemporary than one that uses them.<\/p>\n

It is better to retain at least some upper storage when the kitchen is small and has no pantry, when the available tall units are already occupied by the refrigerator and ovens, or when the quantity of tableware and food genuinely requires more space.<\/p>\n

Removing them may also make little sense if they are simply replaced with numerous fully loaded shelves. In that case, the ability to conceal objects is lost without achieving any real visual lightness.<\/p>\n

Intermediate solutions also exist: a few wall cabinets concentrated in one area, glazed elements, shallower suspended modules or a single long shelf. The choice does not need to become a rigid alternative between a completely full wall and a completely empty one.<\/p>\n

A kitchen without wall cabinets<\/strong> works when the empty wall is the result of a planning decision rather than purely aesthetic subtraction. Before removing upper units, it is essential to know where plates, glasses, food and small appliances will go; how the cooking area will be ventilated; where sockets and lighting will be positioned; and which surfaces will remain exposed. When these answers are already built into the design, the free wall can genuinely make the kitchen feel brighter, more open and more coherent with the living area.
