Plasterboard niches<\/strong> can transform the depth of a wall or false wall into useful space for storage, display or integrated lighting. They can replace a bedside table, lighten the appearance of a living-room wall, create storage for products in a shower or simply introduce depth without adding furniture. The difference between a well-designed niche and a purely decorative recess, however, depends on the project: proportion, function, load, wall material and building services should be defined before the form<\/strong>. A niche intended for three books does not require the same checks as a stone shelf, just as an illuminated recess in a living room cannot be designed according to the same criteria as a niche inside a shower.<\/p>\n

When a plasterboard niche is genuinely useful<\/h2>\n

A niche is useful when it removes an element that would otherwise occupy space in front of the wall.<\/p>\n

In a hallway, it can replace a small console; beside the bed, it can hold books, a phone and a lamp; in the bathroom, it avoids projecting shelves inside the shower; in the living room, it can integrate a television, art or a few objects without adding a full bookcase.<\/p>\n

The most interesting advantage is therefore the continuity between architecture and storage<\/strong>. The recess is not placed against the wall: it becomes part of its geometry.<\/p>\n

This approach also appears in recent interiors where niches are used to reduce the amount of visible furniture. In the Blondie Space Apartment by Vlad Kudin, published by ArchDaily in 2025, storage is integrated into niches with flush fronts finished in the same plaster as the walls, maintaining continuous surfaces and limiting visual interruptions.<\/p>\n

A niche therefore works particularly well when it makes something disappear<\/strong>, rather than when it is added simply because a wall looks too empty.<\/p>\n

Proportions should begin with what the niche needs to contain<\/h2>\n

There is no ideal size that works for every niche.<\/p>\n

A very narrow, tall recess may work for a sculpture or lamp; a horizontal niche can accompany a headboard or television wall; a sequence of small recesses creates a more decorative rhythm.<\/p>\n

Before deciding on width, height and depth, it is useful to identify the largest object that will need to fit inside and the space required to use it comfortably.<\/p>\n

The relationship with the wall also matters. Five niches of almost identical size distributed without hierarchy can create a more fragmented effect than one generous opening.<\/p>\n

In a contemporary interior, it is often more effective to work with a few clearly legible voids<\/strong>, leaving enough solid wall around them. The wall retains its visual mass, while the niche reads as a genuine subtraction rather than a decorative grid.<\/p>\n

In the living room, a niche can replace part of a bookcase<\/h2>\n

\"Plasterboard<\/p>\n

The living-room wall is one of the contexts where plasterboard can be used most effectively to integrate storage and building services.<\/p>\n

A large niche can accommodate the television while keeping cables and technical devices out of sight; smaller recesses can hold books, ceramics and artworks. The solution works particularly well when the objects intended for display are relatively selective.<\/p>\n

If, however, the collection includes hundreds of books, records and objects, creating numerous plasterboard cavities may be less flexible than using a bookcase.<\/p>\n

The distinction is important: a niche is permanent architecture<\/strong>, while a piece of furniture can be moved, reconfigured or replaced.<\/p>\n

For this reason, living rooms often benefit from combining the two systems: a few built-in recesses for selected objects and closed storage or furniture for everything else.<\/p>\n

In the bathroom, the main issue is not form but water<\/h2>\n

\"Bathroom<\/p>\n

A shower niche is one of the clearest examples of a situation where aesthetics must remain secondary to the technical build-up.<\/p>\n

A standard plasterboard panel cannot automatically be considered suitable for every wet environment. Knauf, for example, distinguishes its Moisture Panel boards, intended for high-humidity indoor environments such as bathrooms and kitchens, from its AQUAPANEL Indoor cement boards, which are specifically proposed for wet rooms, showers and much more severe exposure to water<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Prefabricated systems specifically designed for shower niches are also available. Schluter KERDI-BOARD-SN, for example, is a pre-waterproofed component designed to be integrated into the KERDI system and uses KERDI-BAND around the perimeter to seal the connections.<\/p>\n

The point is not to recommend a particular product, but to clarify one principle: \u201cmoisture-resistant plasterboard\u201d and \u201ca waterproof system for an area directly exposed to water\u201d are not automatically the same thing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In a bathroom, cladding, joints, corners, surface falls and the connection with the waterproofing system also need to be designed together.<\/p>\n

In the bedroom, a niche can become a bedside table or part of the headboard<\/h2>\n

\"Bedroom<\/p>\n

A headboard allows niches to be used with a very different logic from that of a bathroom.<\/p>\n

A false wall can create enough depth to integrate small side recesses, sockets, switches and lighting. The result can remove bedside tables entirely or reduce their visual presence.<\/p>\n

In the Heritage Apartment by Andr\u00e9 Luque<\/strong>, published in 2026, integrated lighting within the niches and headboard helps create a diffuse lighting system in the main bedroom. It is a useful example because the recess is not treated as a simple frame: it becomes part of the overall composition of timber, light and headboard.<\/p>\n

A niche beside the bed still needs to remain genuinely usable. If it is too small to hold everyday essentials, or if an LED source remains directly visible while someone is lying down, formal effect begins to take priority over function.<\/p>\n

Hallways and circulation spaces are well suited to shallow niches<\/h2>\n

In a circulation space, every centimetre occupied by furniture can interfere with movement.<\/p>\n

A niche can instead create a place for a photograph, small artwork, keys or decorative objects without adding a projecting volume.<\/p>\n

It can be particularly effective when illuminated, becoming a visual reference along the route. A sequence of niches can also visually interrupt a very long corridor, provided it does not become an excessive succession of recesses.<\/p>\n

Here the advantage is primarily spatial: the function remains within the plane of the wall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Before cutting into or creating a false wall, however, it is essential to verify what runs inside it: services, studs, insulation and the acoustic or fire performance of the partition cannot be altered without considering the system as a whole. Knauf stresses that the performance of dry-wall partitions comes from the combination of profiles, boards and system components rather than from the board considered in isolation.<\/p>\n

Shelves and loads: there is no single weight limit for every niche<\/h2>\n

One of the most common misunderstandings is to assume that any horizontal surface created in plasterboard automatically becomes a shelf capable of supporting books, vases or stone.<\/p>\n

The allowable load depends on the type and number of boards, framing, stud spacing, niche geometry, fixing system and the presence of any reinforcement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Even fixing capacities demonstrate why each configuration must be considered individually. Knauf, for example, states a capacity of up to 65 kg for its Hartmut M5x60 cavity fixing within its intended application. This does not mean that \u201ca plasterboard wall supports 65 kg\u201d, nor does it mean that a shelf formed within a niche can automatically carry that load.<\/p>\n

When the project includes heavy books, televisions, basins, large decorative objects or stone shelves<\/strong>, the structure and any reinforcement need to be defined before the wall is closed, according to the selected system.<\/p>\n

A shelf designed from the beginning is very different from a heavy object that someone decides to add later.<\/p>\n

Integrated LED lighting: light should be designed together with the niche<\/h2>\n

An LED strip concealed along the top or side edge can radically change the perception of the recess.<\/p>\n

The first decision concerns the intended effect: illuminating the object, washing the back wall with light or making the entire volume appear luminous.<\/p>\n

Simply hiding a flexible strip behind an edge does not guarantee a uniform result. In professional systems, linear LEDs are often combined with aluminium profiles and diffusers<\/strong>, which contribute to thermal management and the quality of the luminous line. LED Linear, for example, explicitly specifies the role of the aluminium profile in dissipating heat from its linear lighting systems.<\/p>\n

Accessibility matters too. Drivers and components that may require maintenance should not become unreachable behind a continuous finish.<\/p>\n

In humid environments, the lighting system must also be appropriate for its installation zone. Linear fixtures with specific protection for bathrooms and showers are available; Schluter even offers prefabricated niches with LED lighting and a dedicated waterproof connection box for electrical integration in wet areas.<\/p>\n

The design objective is therefore not simply to \u201cput an LED in the niche\u201d, but to make light, profile, wiring and maintenance part of the detail from the beginning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The finish determines whether the niche disappears or becomes a focal point<\/h2>\n

Finishing the back and edges with the same material as the wall creates a monolithic effect.<\/p>\n

Painting the interior in a contrasting colour, by contrast, turns the recess into a graphic element. Timber, stone, metal or ceramic can provide greater resistance on horizontal surfaces and introduce material contrast.<\/p>\n

The choice should depend on function.<\/p>\n

In a recess intended for objects that are moved frequently, a more durable surface may be more practical than paint alone. In a purely decorative niche, by contrast, the continuity of plaster may be exactly what makes the depth interesting.<\/p>\n

Grazing light also tends to emphasise edges, joints and imperfections in the finish<\/strong>. The more the design aims for a perfectly minimal, illuminated recess, the more important execution quality becomes.<\/p>\n

A niche does not necessarily have to be rectangular<\/h2>\n

Plasterboard systems can also accommodate arches, rounded corners and softer geometries, provided the system and boards selected are compatible with the required radius.<\/p>\n

A curved form can work when it relates to other elements in the interior, but it can easily become an isolated decorative gesture if it appears only once with no connection to the floor plan.<\/p>\n

The same principle applies as with curved walls: the geometry should have a reason. An arch can soften a headboard, a vertical niche can follow a curved wall, while a highly elaborate form created simply to attract attention may date more quickly than the rest of the interior.<\/p>\n

The most common mistakes with plasterboard niches<\/h2>\n

The first is designing the niche before knowing what it needs to contain. This often results in recesses that are too small, too deep or randomly proportioned.<\/p>\n

The second is multiplying the number of openings. A wall filled with niches can feel more cluttered than a bookcase.<\/p>\n

The third is assuming that plasterboard can support any load. The weight must be checked against the actual structure and fixing system.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The fourth is using a standard solution in directly wet areas without correctly designing waterproofing and materials.<\/p>\n

The fifth is adding LED lighting only at the end, then discovering that the source, cables or driver remain visible or difficult to maintain.<\/p>\n

The sixth is forgetting sockets, switches and services running through the wall.<\/p>\n

The seventh is creating a niche where a piece of furniture would actually work better.<\/p>\n

Plasterboard niche or furniture: when is one better than the other?<\/h2>\n

A niche is the more coherent solution when the aim is to create architectural continuity<\/strong>, free up floor space, avoid projecting elements or integrate lighting and small objects into a wall.<\/p>\n

Furniture remains the better option when substantial storage is required, when objects change frequently or when the ability to modify the room in the future needs to be preserved.<\/p>\n

There is also a third option: using the niche to contain a piece of joinery. In the previously mentioned Blondie Space Apartment, for example, furniture and recesses are integrated into the wall until they become almost indistinguishable from it. In Apartment SL by BRH+, a niche discovered during renovation works was instead transformed into a small suspended alcove, showing how an existing constraint can become a functional element.<\/p>\n

Plasterboard niches<\/strong> work best when they remove something from the design: a bedside table, a projecting shelf, an additional piece of furniture or a visible light fitting. Their value does not depend on the number of recesses created, but on the precision with which void, wall, objects, light and structure are brought together<\/strong>.
