Which materials evoke the sea without spelling it out?<\/h2>\n

The right materials are those that have actually seen the sea, or could withstand it: brushed or bleached wood, teak, linen, heavy cotton, woven rope, brass and stainless steel. The perfect conversation piece exists and has a true story: Riva 1920<\/a>, the Brianza company that has specialised in solid wood since 1920, builds tables and benches from the briccole of Venice, the oak posts that mark the channels of the Venetian Lagoon<\/a>, worn by water and shipworms. A nautical living room starts from a sofa with removable covers in white, \u00e9cru or blue canvas, flanked by pale woods and perhaps a bookcase that remembers ship cabins, with dark uprights and light shelves. In the bedroom, references to the sea should become quieter. A headboard in oak or woven cane, white bed linen, a powder-blue coverlet and floor-length linen curtains are enough. If stripes appear, they should be very fine; reading lights can nod to nautical brass while retaining a contemporary design. The best result feels like a room made fresh by the wind, not a themed cabin.<\/p>\n

The dining area can carry the home’s most tactile piece: a marked solid-wood table, rush or rope chairs and an opaline glass pendant. The terrace is the command deck of nautical style and asks for few, correct pieces: light seating, technical fabrics that withstand salt and sun, and a proper parasol. Near the coast, aesthetics cannot be separated from maintenance. Salt accelerates corrosion, sunlight fades fabrics and timber, and humidity tests hardware and paint.
