A real case study: Shigeru Ban’s Curtain Wall House<\/h2>\n
At the Curtain Wall House<\/a>, completed in Japan in 1995, Shigeru Ban uses a large textile screen to shape part of the relationship between the house and the outside. The curtain drops from the third to the second level and controls light and views; the terrace lies between it and the sliding glass doors.<\/p>\n This is a facade solution, not an example of a curtain installed between two rooms. The distinction matters. What contemporary interiors can borrow is the idea of an adjustable boundary, able to change its presence without losing its architectural role.<\/p>\n Bringing this idea indoors requires a different design, with specific dimensions, fabrics, supports and conditions of use. During working hours, the curtain can screen the rest of the room; at the end of the day, it can conceal monitors and documents, giving the living area a different visual hierarchy.<\/p>\n Decide where the fabric will gather when open: beside a clear wall or inside a dedicated recess. If the stack ends up in front of storage used every day, the spatial advantage is lost. Sockets, cables and the movement of the chair must remain independent of the curtain.<\/p>\n This layout helps define a work zone and reduce visual distractions. It does not provide acoustic privacy during a meeting. If work involves frequent calls while other people use the living room, the need for a more effective separation should be addressed before choosing the fabric.<\/p>\n In a single open room, a curtain can define the edge of a sleeping alcove. When open, it leaves the entire volume legible; when closed, it hides the bed from view. The track must be positioned so that the bed remains easy to reach and nearby furniture can still be used comfortably.<\/p>\n A blackout fabric controls the light passing through the textile itself. Light can still enter around the edges and through gaps above or below, so the result depends on the complete system. This difference is crucial when one person sleeps while another remains awake in the same space.<\/p>\n The curtain does not make the area independent and does not replace the checks required for a bedroom. Ventilation, daylight, services and safety remain matters for the room as a whole. The purpose here is to define the sleeping area visually without promising the performance of a wall.<\/p>\n Between an entrance and living room, a curtain can open up or narrow the perceived sequence. Gathered to one side, it preserves continuity; drawn across, it filters the direct view from the front door. It makes sense when the goal is to modulate a sightline, not when it makes circulation awkward.<\/p>\n Test real movements: entering with bags, walking through with a tray, opening a nearby door. Design the track around these gestures. If every passage forces the body to push the fabric aside, reconsider its position, opening direction or the system itself.<\/p>\n Transparency can be useful here. A sheer fabric preserves a relationship between the two areas, but privacy should be assessed with lights on at both sides and under evening conditions. The same weave can look very different when backlit.<\/p>\n A sample is useful for assessing touch and colour; understanding the drape requires a sufficiently large piece, ideally hung vertically. Pleats, lining and weight change the volume of the curtain. A fluid fabric and a more structured textile create different visual boundaries even in the same colour.<\/p>\n Before ordering, agree on maintenance, possible shrinkage and how the curtain will be removed. A room divider is touched and moved frequently, so its design must also make cleaning practical without operations out of proportion to everyday use.<\/p>\n Drawing only the track line on plan is not enough. Show the open fabric, the area where it stacks and the depth of the pleats. There is no universal percentage that works for every system: the manufacturer and curtain maker should provide dimensions for the specific combination.<\/p>\n Curves, joints and supports affect how smoothly the curtain runs. Fixings must be sized for the substrate and actual weight. A visually slender ceiling line still requires a reliable construction solution coordinated with services and inspection points.<\/p>\n An opaque textile can prevent people from seeing through its surface while leaving sound paths open. Absorbing some sound within a room and isolating an adjacent area are different objectives. Calling a curtain heavy is not enough to assign it an acoustic performance.<\/p>\n If a system is proposed to improve acoustics, read the test results for the specified composition and installation. Data for one particular product cannot be transferred to any textile. Confidential meetings, disturbed sleep or incompatible activities may require a wall with a door and a coherent acoustic design.<\/p>\n A curtain alone does not provide thermal insulation, contain smells or separate noisy activities. The need to hang cabinets, integrate building services or create a reliable closure may also point towards a wall.<\/p>\n To compare other options, fluted glass<\/a> creates a different relationship between light and visual screening. In an open-plan layout<\/a>, furniture arrangement remains the first tool: a curtain cannot automatically correct awkward circulation or misplaced functions.<\/p>\n The value of a textile divider emerges when it is clear what needs to change during the day. There is no need to close off everything all the time. It may be enough to hide a desk from view, screen a sleeping alcove or adjust the threshold between an entrance and living room.<\/p>\n Precision means planning both conditions, open and closed.
