There is a word that, until recently, was enough to condemn a project: kitsch. And for a long season that verdict had a very precise colour, gold. The mirror bright tap, the swollen gilded frame, the handle that glittered like one jewel too many: gold in interior design<\/strong> had become the symbol of a taste that mistook the precious for the expensive, elegance for excess. Then that certainty began to crack. Gold is back at the heart of our interiors, and in the pages of design magazines it is now looked at with desire rather than embarrassment.<\/p>\n

The truth is that gold hasn’t come back: our idea of gold has changed<\/strong>. What lights up this season’s rooms has nothing left of the mirror chrome we once tied to ostentation: it is a matte, brushed, hand laid gold that ages and holds the light instead of throwing it back with arrogance. The moment it stopped shining to prove something, gold shed its weight. It was demoted from a symbol of wealth to plain material. And it is precisely that demotion that saved it.<\/p>\n

Why gold is a light, not a colour<\/h2>\n

Anyone who designs knows it well: gold does not behave like a colour. A colour you choose, you lay down, and it stays where it is. Gold instead changes with the light, with the hour, with whoever crosses the room. In the morning it is almost white, at sunset it warms to amber, at night under a lamp it turns to fire. It is the only colour that carries time inside it. No wonder it belongs to the history of art before that of furnishing: the gold grounds of Byzantine mosaics, Klimt’s gold leaf, the altarpieces of the fourteenth century never used gold to declare wealth, but to hold the light and make sacred whatever it touched.<\/p>\n

When a designer reaches for gold today, this is exactly what they are after. Not to announce a budget, but to bring warmth, depth, a vibration no paint can give. A thread of gold around a mirror is not there to enrich: it is there to make the room feel lit even when the lights are off. It is the distance between an object that tells you what it cost and one that tells you how it feels to stand beside it.<\/p>\n

Why gold is back in fashion right now<\/h2>\n

Gold returns whenever we need warmth, and this is a moment when we need it badly. We are coming out of a decade of greys, of greige<\/em>, of flawless, slightly anaesthetised homes designed more to be photographed than to be lived in. Cold minimalism has worn thin, and with it the idea that elegance meant taking away. After all the time spent inside our own rooms, we have started asking furniture for something more physical again: matter, texture, a soul.<\/p>\n

The rest was done by the trends running alongside it. The return of Art D\u00e9co<\/a>, which has always made gold its geometric signature. The maximalism<\/a> that almost four designers out of ten now claim to practise, after years of subtraction. And the deep colours defining the season, burgundy, forest green, night blue, which need a warm metal beside them so as not to go dark. Gold is the note that holds all of this together. It is no accident that at the latest Salone del Mobile copper, bronze and brass took back the surfaces that had belonged to steel for a decade.<\/p>\n

Recent interiors where gold sets the tone<\/h2>\n

Anyone who walked into the lobby of the Orient Express La Minerva in Rome this year understood at once where taste is heading. Hugo Toro worked twelve thousand square metres of a seventeenth century palazzo as if writing a screenplay, choosing warm yellow and satin brass as the thread running through every room. Nothing here shouts: the travertine, the custom Murano glass, the marble Minerva watching over the bar beneath a bespoke skylight. Gold is not decoration here, it is atmosphere, the amber light of the Grand Tour<\/em> brought into the present.<\/p>\n

The same temperature runs through the homes Italian designers delivered this year. Among the best interior design projects in Milan<\/a>, gold is never a whim but an authorial gesture: Hannes Peer lights a corridor with backlit golden walls that seem to breathe, in an apartment in the Muzio building a wall of gold leaf becomes a headboard like an altar ground, and in a Liberty spirited home a brass chandelier warms a dining room in earthen tones. Gold’s rehabilitation runs entirely through its finishes. The noblest is still hand laid gold leaf, the very technique of the old gilders: applied to a metal disc or a fibreglass shade it is never perfectly even, and for that reason it is alive, changing by the hour. Then comes the great family of brasses, which at the latest Milan Design Week appeared in all its temperatures, from the most severe burnished to rose gold: Ghidini1961 summed it up in Richard Hutten’s Lucky<\/em> coat stand, polished, burnished and rosy at once. Polished for a deliberate D\u00e9co gesture, brushed and satin for a soft light that holds no fingerprints, burnished when depth is needed.<\/p>\n

Technique made all of this possible, too. Galvanic and PVD treatments have made golden finishes resistant to water and daily use, so much so that brushed gold is now at home even in the bathroom and the kitchen, where it would once have been unthinkable. And then there are the surfaces that turn gold into pure matter: leaf mosaic, Murano glass with gilding fused into the crystal, woven fabrics threaded with metal. Gold is no longer something to show off. It is something to work.<\/p>\n

Who still knows how to work gold<\/h2>\n

It is no surprise that this new idea of gold speaks mostly Italian, because it demands something that has never been in short supply here: the hand. You see it in the light of Catellani & Smith, where gold leaf is laid onto discs and reflectors one by one, so that no two lamps are truly alike. Or in an icon that changes its skin without betraying itself, like the Atollo by Vico Magistretti for Oluce, a Compasso d’Oro in 1979, which also exists in a satin gold version: the same restraint we find today in the most coveted design table lamps.<\/p>\n

It is an ancient knowledge, one that in Italy never truly broke. There are those who turn gold leaf into mosaic and dress walls with it like jewels, those who fuse it into Murano crystal, those who have been weaving golden threads into fabric for five centuries. And there is brass, brushed with a new discretion, which has entered even the bathroom and the kitchen without dragging any nostalgia behind it. Names like Sicis, Rubelli, Venini, De Castelli or Gessi are not chasing the trend: if anything, the trend has come looking for them again.<\/p>\n

How to use gold without slipping into kitsch<\/h2>\n

The line between elegant gold and kitsch gold is thin but razor sharp, and it comes down to one rule: gold must be an accent, never a theme. It works when it lights a single point and lets everything else breathe, the frame of a mirror, the stem of a lamp, the edge of a boiserie<\/em>. It stops working the instant it tries to fill the room. The secret of the most successful interiors is not the accumulation of gold, but the subtraction all around it.<\/p>\n

The company it keeps matters too. Gold gives its best beside materials that lift it without competing, walnut, veined marble, velvet, textured plaster, and beside the deep colours of the season, sage green, night blue, burgundy.
