Over more than fifty years, AIPI has accompanied the evolution of the interior designer, working to ensure that this figure is recognised not as someone generically linked to furnishing (even though our first deed of incorporation bears the acronym O.N.A., Ordine Nazionale Arredatori, the National Order of Furnishers), but as a design professional with skills, method and precise responsibilities towards clients and the community.

A fundamental step was Law no. 4 of 14 January 2013, which regulates professions not organised into professional orders or colleges and under which AIPI obtained recognition in 2023. Professional identities are not erased: they are strengthened by clarity of competences.

What the public does not always understand is that interior design is not the same as choosing a piece of furniture, a colour or a finish. It can reduce stress, increase autonomy and improve the perception of safety.

The interior designer is the professional closest to the everyday experience of space. When this happens, accessible design does not appear as an afterthought and does not create stigmatising spaces: it becomes widespread quality. In my view, this is today one of the highest responsibilities of the interior designer, if not the most important.

What does designing interiors responsibly mean for AIPI?

Designing responsibly means asking not only whether a space will be beautiful, but who will be able to use it, what risks it may present, how it will age and what impact it will have on people and the environment. Responsibility is not a statement to be added at the end of a project: it must guide every decision from the outset.

We addressed this topic in a very concrete way during Milan Design Week 2026 with Responsible Interiors, the international event promoted by AIPI, ECIA and Fondazione Pio Manzù at Casa Lombardia under the high patronage of the Lombardy Region. We brought together professionals, institutions, standards bodies, universities and industry to discuss the role of interior design between safety, inclusivity, beauty and new professional standards. The day closed with a talk by Karim Rashid on the future of design and interior design, alongside contributions from extraordinary figures such as Marco Piva and Rama Gheerawo.

The discussion started from the Crans-Montana tragedy of 1 January 2026. We did so with deep respect for the victims and their families, without any intention of taking the place of the authorities responsible for establishing facts and responsibilities. That tragedy nevertheless reminded us, in the most painful way, that interior design cannot be separated from people’s safety.

Materials, escape routes, flows, crowding, signage, emergency lighting, accessibility and the legibility of routes are not secondary elements. Many of these aspects require specialist expertise and the involvement of architects, engineers, fire safety technicians, operators and the competent authorities. A responsible interior designer must know the limits of their role, work with the necessary professionals and never allow aesthetic ambition to prevail over safety.

Our task is not only to formally comply with a standard, but to be able to recognise a risk, report it and help prevent it. Professional responsibility also means asking uncomfortable questions, checking the consistency of choices and rejecting solutions that could compromise the protection of users.

For AIPI, beauty, inclusion and safety are not alternative values: they are inseparable parts of quality. The programme requires at least 20 credits a year and 60 over three years and, from 1 January 2027, earning them will become mandatory within the association for the recognition and maintenance of the AIPI professional pathway and of the Certificate of Quality and Professional Qualification provided for by law.

I do not see this commitment as a bureaucratic formality. It is a guarantee for clients and, at the same time, a form of protection for professionals. In a sector that changes so rapidly, there can be no qualification without constant, verifiable and transparent updating.

A strategic role will be played by AroundDesign, AIPI’s partner platform for online and on-demand training. Through AroundDesign we can offer selected content, specialist courses and pathways that count towards CFC credits, making training accessible to our members in every region and beyond national borders. It is a fundamental tool for turning the principle of Lifelong Learning into a concrete and continuous practice.

AIPI is also among the first professional design associations to have adopted, as early as 2022, advanced digital tools to make the Lifelong Learning pathway recognisable and verifiable. Courses and credits earned can be documented through digital Open Badges, protected by blockchain technology, which guarantees the integrity, traceability and immutability of the recorded information.

Lifelong learning and responsibility must go hand in hand. Only in this way can the interior designer fully take on their role: not a mere interpreter of products or trends, but a professional who is crucial to the quality, safety and well-being of the spaces people live in.

How important is it to build a network between professionals, institutions, companies and schools?

Building a network is essential. Institutions must understand the public value of interior design; companies produce research, materials and innovation; schools train new generations; professionals translate all of this into real spaces. None of these players can tackle today’s complexity alone.

A particularly important step came in 2022, when the reform of the AIPI Statute allowed companies, universities, schools and publishers to join the Association as affiliate members. We thus moved beyond the logic of occasional sponsorship to build a more stable, responsible and participatory relationship.

The AIPI Corporate Programme was created precisely with this goal: to involve selected organisations that share the Association’s values and intend to actively support the world of interior design. Being an affiliate member does not mean buying visibility or receiving a commercial seal of approval, but joining a cultural and professional project and accepting its ethical principles, responsibilities and aims.

The relationship with companies must be based on a genuine exchange of information. Professionals need to know about the research, performance, limits and methods of application of products; companies, in turn, must be able to listen to designers and understand people’s emerging needs. From this dialogue can come materials, components, services and spaces that are ever more sustainable, safe, accessible and inclusive.

The recent agreement with DFA Italia, Design for All Italia, AIPI’s exclusive partner for developing specific initiatives dedicated to inclusivity, moves in the same direction. Together we are working on an awards programme able to recognise projects, products, services and corporate practices that concretely translate the values of Design for All.

The relationship with companies is also linked to the AIPI Continuing Education Credits Programme. Through technical meetings, visits, workshops and courses approved within the CFC programme, we can explore in depth the specific technologies and products that an interior designer needs to know in order to design with real awareness.

I am thinking above all of what I call invisible architecture: light, acoustics and sound, air quality, thermal comfort, safety, control systems and all those components that are often not immediately visible, yet profoundly determine the health, well-being and perceptual quality of an environment.

The ability to work as a system is part of AIPI’s very history. We are among the founding members of POLI.design, established in 1999 within the Politecnico di Milano as a meeting point between higher education, the profession and industry. Today I have the honour of representing AIPI in its Members’ Assembly, confirming how strategic we consider the dialogue between academic culture and professional practice.

The MID, Master in Interior Design, which has been running for more than twenty years, and the specialist master’s programmes in Exhibition Design, atmospheres, sensory surfaces, light and new living experiences are shaping the interior designer of tomorrow. They train professionals capable of combining research, method, technology, sustainability and inclusion.

At European and international level, AIPI enjoys well-established relationships and an authoritative presence. The real challenge will be to integrate these needs without producing cold, standardised or excessively technological environments.

AIPI offers a very clear direction: designing intuitive, adaptable and welcoming spaces that work for people of different ages, cultures and abilities. A project does not begin with a photograph, but with an understanding of people, context and the problems to be solved. It takes curiosity, discipline, culture, the ability to listen and openness to dialogue.

Preparation also comes from direct contact with the building site, from knowledge of materials and products, from dialogue with contractors and craftspeople and from the ability to understand time, costs and responsibilities. But above all, it comes from knowing people: their needs, their vulnerabilities, their habits and their aspirations. Products and spaces are tools; the human being remains the centre and the purpose of the project.

I would advise choosing pathways where theory meets real projects. The experience of POLI.design, of which AIPI is a founding member, shows how specific master’s programmes such as the MID can guide talent towards concrete skills, professional responsibility and an international outlook.

I would also invite students to join the AIPI community free of charge. Student membership makes it possible to get to know the profession up close, take part in meetings and training activities, engage with professionals and companies and understand everything a project involves: listening to the client, method, the building site, coordination, safety, ethics and responsibility.

Academic training is essential, but it is not enough. Non-formal learning, acquired through courses, workshops, technical visits and association activities, should never be overlooked, nor should informal learning, which comes from everyday experience, observation, mistakes, exchanges with colleagues and work in the field.
