To understand how SMEG turned a domestic machine into a furnishing presence, the story must return to Guastalla: to metal, enamel and an industrial history that began in 1948.

SMEG is an Italian appliance company founded in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzoni senior in Guastalla, in the province of Reggio Emilia. Its name stands for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla. Still associated with the Bertazzoni family, the business produces and markets cooking, refrigeration and washing appliances, as well as small appliances. The FAB refrigerator is its most recognisable image, but it does not represent the entire catalogue or the company’s design culture.

The curved door, prominent handle and metallic lettering identify a FAB before it is opened. It asks to be seen, even in a kitchen where other technology disappears behind coordinated cabinet fronts. SMEG’s history repeatedly crosses that choice: give an appliance an independent form or integrate it into the architecture of the furniture.

What does SMEG stand for, and who founded it?

SMEG is the acronym for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla. The words preserve both the original industrial activity and its location. The company’s chronology attributes its foundation to Vittorio Bertazzoni senior in 1948.

This concrete industrial name is far removed from the retro imagery now associated with part of the range. Before colour became a furnishing choice, there was metalworking and surface treatment. An appliance’s appearance emerges from the relationship between construction, use and perception: enamel protects while helping define the object’s visible character.

The graphic identity also has a design history. In 1977, Franco Maria Ricci designed the logo, using a composition of circular elements to interpret gas burners and oven controls. The sign refers to particular domestic components rather than depicting a house in generic terms.

SMEG history: from cookers to built-in appliances

The company chronology records cookers in 1955, the Elisabeth in 1956, the Leda washing machine in 1963 and the Niagara dishwasher in 1970. These stages show an expanding relationship with domestic tasks rather than a business that began with the coloured refrigerator.

Built-in ovens and hobs followed in 1971. Integration changes the design problem. The appliance must work within cabinetry, at a particular height and with adequate opening and ventilation clearances. Its visible front is only part of the relationship with the kitchen.

This history explains why a freestanding appliance and a built-in model should not be assessed as interchangeable choices. One presents an autonomous volume; the other depends on the furniture around it. Their installation needs influence the layout long before a colour or finish is selected.

Built-in ovens and a freestanding refrigerator: two different ways to place technology in the kitchen. Image from the Archi & Interiors archive.

Who owns SMEG, and where are its products made?

SMEG remains associated with the Bertazzoni family. Its headquarters are in Guastalla, and its international activity includes subsidiaries in other markets. Without a verified shareholding breakdown, family ownership should not be converted into invented percentages.

The company’s Italian information identifies five manufacturing plants in Italy. That statement does not certify the manufacturing origin of every individual product in every category. For a particular appliance, check its label and product documentation rather than drawing a universal conclusion from the location of the headquarters.

Italian design, the company’s origin and the manufacturing location of an individual model are different facts. They may coincide in a particular case, but the terms are not interchangeable. Keeping them separate gives readers a more useful basis for an informed choice.

The FAB refrigerator: launched in 1997, inspired by the 1950s

The FAB range dates to 1997. Its reference to the 1950s is aesthetic, not the date of the design. Describing it as a refrigerator created in the 1950s would confuse inspiration with chronology.

The curved front, substantial handle and colour make it a visible object in the room. That presence can work especially well when the rest of the kitchen is quieter, but a coloured appliance is not a complete design strategy by itself. Its proportions and position remain decisive.

The FAB28 also appears in our selection of luxury designer appliances. Its appeal comes from the relationship between an ordinary domestic function and a strongly recognisable form, not from colour alone.

Before choosing a freestanding refrigerator, verify the hinge side, door opening, drawer clearance, ventilation and required distances in the installation documentation. A model intended to stand freely should not be treated as built-in simply because cabinetry can be drawn around it.

The FAB28 refrigerator and SMEG small appliances: colour as a presence in the kitchen. Image from the Archi & Interiors archive.

Designers and different languages within the catalogue

SMEG’s design collaborations include Guido Canali, Mario Bellini, Piano Design, Marc Newson and deepdesign, Matteo Bazzicalupo and Raffaella Mangiarotti, alongside the company’s internal team. The catalogue therefore contains several approaches rather than one style applied to every appliance.

This variety matters when choosing a kitchen language. A rounded coloured refrigerator and a dark flush oven front make different claims on the room. Their common manufacturer does not automatically make them visually interchangeable or oblige a designer to place every product family together.

A useful selection starts with the role of each element. Some appliances can provide a focal point; others can remain subordinate to the cabinetry. Consistency does not require identical shapes everywhere, but a clear relationship between the elements that are meant to stand out.

Dolce Stil Novo: technology within the composition

Dolce Stil Novo uses black glass with copper or stainless-steel details to create another design language. Here the visible face of the appliance becomes part of the alignment of fronts and surfaces, rather than a separate retro volume.

That visual precision depends on technical decisions. Dimensions, clearances, power requirements and installation conditions must be checked against the individual model. A compelling photograph cannot substitute for the information needed to make the appliance work in a real kitchen.

The same principle applies to selecting an induction hob. The surface seen in a finished interior is only the visible portion of a choice that also involves cookware, electrical provision, ventilation arrangements and everyday use.

Small appliances: the countertop is a working surface

The small-appliance range introduced in 2014 was developed with deepdesign. These objects bring design into everyday gestures: making coffee, toasting bread or preparing ingredients. Their visibility on the countertop is only one aspect of the encounter.

Ergonomics, cables, sockets and the amount of usable work surface should influence their position. A coordinated group can look attractive but still occupy the area needed for preparation. An appliance that is frequently used deserves a practical place, not only a photogenic one.

There is no obligation to coordinate every object by brand or colour. A successful countertop arrangement makes the daily sequence easier and leaves enough room for work. The aesthetic choice should reinforce that logic rather than conceal a difficult layout.

Dolce&Gabbana: distinguish the collaborations

In 2016, the Frigorifero d’Arte project brought together a series of one hundred refrigerators hand-painted by Sicilian artists. Those individual works should not be confused with industrially reproduced decoration in other collaborative collections.

Sicily Is My Love belongs to a different product context. A common visual reference does not mean every appliance was hand-painted as part of the 2016 series. The distinction concerns both the making of the object and the way the collaboration is described.

Divina Cucina brings together a freestanding range, hood and matching refrigerator. The image below shows the Sicilian cart motif, with its warm colours and ornamental detail. Its caption identifies this collection rather than incorrectly attributing the photographed objects to the hundred hand-painted refrigerators.

These projects make decoration highly visible, but they also require care in an interior. A strong pattern can lead the composition; it does not need competing motifs on every neighbouring surface to establish a recognisable character.

Divina Cucina, the SMEG and Dolce&Gabbana collaboration: a coordinated range, hood and refrigerator featuring the Sicilian cart motif. Image from the Archi & Interiors archive.

Guido Canali’s headquarters: industry and landscape

The Guastalla headquarters designed by Guido Canali adds an architectural chapter. Courtyards and the landscape of the Po Valley frame the industrial setting; the buildings occupy approximately thirty per cent of the site.

The project received an honourable mention at the Italian Architecture Gold Medal of the Triennale in 2006. Its relevance is not a visual resemblance to an appliance. It addresses how a manufacturing business can inhabit a place and how built volumes relate to the space left between them.

This is another way to understand a design-led company: not only through products encountered at home, but also through the architecture associated with its work. Industrial identity can be expressed through an arrangement of buildings and landscape as well as through a domestic object.

Choosing SMEG within a complete kitchen project

Start by deciding which appliances should remain visible and which should be integrated. Then establish dimensions, opening space, installation requirements and the relationship with work areas. Colour cannot compensate for a refrigerator door that opens badly or a countertop crowded by equipment.

The Storm Blue colour story shows how a particular hue can connect kitchen and living spaces. It is a design option, not a rule that everything nearby must match. The surrounding materials and the scale of the coloured object determine its effect.

The most coherent room is not necessarily the one that reproduces a catalogue arrangement. A kitchen combines furniture, lighting, surfaces and technology, often from different manufacturers. The important thing is how those choices serve a shared spatial and functional intention.

A real interior: MI-1 Residence in Laval

The MI-1 Residence in Laval, Canada, designed by Dupont Blouin in 2022, provides a useful residential context. Its project documentation lists Bertazzoni, Miele and SMEG. It is therefore a multi-brand interior, not a kitchen in which every visible appliance can be attributed to SMEG.

Olivier Blouin’s photographs show the relationship between kitchen and dining space: a long island, pale surfaces, a timber table and gold-toned details. The design is understood through the whole setting, rather than by isolating one product from the surrounding architecture.

Kitchen and dining area at the MI-1 Residence, Laval, 2022. The FAB makes an appliance conspicuous; built-in products can give it a more restrained place within cabinetry. Small appliances bring the same question down to the scale of a daily gesture.

The choice is not simply between expressive colour and disappearance. It concerns how technology occupies the room: what should be seen, what should remain quiet and how each element works. Understanding that relationship offers a more useful approach than treating a recognisable appliance as an entire kitchen design.

What SMEG stands for, who founded it and where it manufactures: the Bertazzoni family, FAB refrigerators and the design choices that shape a kitchen.

SMEG was founded in Guastalla in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzoni senior; its name means Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla.

The company remains associated with the Bertazzoni family; its five Italian plants do not certify the origin of every product.

FAB refrigerators date to 1997: the 1950s are the aesthetic reference, not the design date.

The catalogue spans freestanding, built-in and small appliances, with different designers and visual languages.

341,342
["post-30043","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-design","category-home-appliances

SMEG: History, Name Meaning, Ownership and Design

<meta name="description" content="What does SMEG stand for?
