Beneath Il Sereno, the old stone boathouse still accommodates wooden boats; above it, a building completed in 2016 faces the Como branch with a rigour that recalls Giuseppe Terragni’s Rationalism. Across the water in Moltrasio, an eighteenth-century villa reopened after three years of restoration, with more than twenty varieties of marble and curtains made from Como silk.

Lake Como design hotels bring together these two identities: architectural memory and contemporary intervention. Luxury hospitality here often occupies buildings that predate their hotel use, from a cardinal’s residence to a neoclassical palace or an Art Nouveau grand hotel. New buildings are less common, and their relationship with a closely protected landscape is integral to their design.

Our editorial selection considers ten addresses for the quality of their architecture and interiors. This is not a price comparison or a ranking of service: the focus is on designers, dates and a reading of the spaces.

Which Lake Como hotels stand out for design?

Among the lake’s most interesting hotels for architecture and interior design are Il Sereno in Torno, Passalacqua in Moltrasio, Villa d’Este in Cernobbio, Mandarin Oriental in Blevio, Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio, The Lake Como EDITION in Cadenabbia, Filario in Lezzeno, Villa Làrio in Pognana Lario and Musa in Sala Comacina. Together, they span almost five centuries, from the villa commissioned by Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio to openings in 2026.

Where the material consulted does not clearly attribute the interiors, the table says so rather than supplying an unverified designer’s name. The three hotels below work with different inherited conditions: a historic boathouse, a former factory site and an existing hotel facade. Each makes that constraint part of its identity.

Il Sereno Lago di Como, Torno

Opened in 2016, Il Sereno was described in the design press as the lake’s first newly built hotel in several decades. Patricia Urquiola designed its architecture and interiors above a historic boathouse. The original project had thirty suites; the hotel’s current information lists forty. Urquiola’s studio describes a contemporary reinterpretation of Terragni’s Casa del Fascio, visible in the regular grid of the facade, clad in local Ceppo Lombardo stone that also appears inside. The central walnut-and-bronze staircase is the focal point, its treads seeming to hover above one another. Copper, Venetian terrazzo and travertine recur in an earthy palette enlivened by pastel pink and green. Botanist Patrick Blanc designed the vertical gardens, while Cantiere Ernesto Riva built the wooden boats. For a closer look at the designer’s career, see our profile of Patricia Urquiola, her work and approach.

Il Sereno, Torno: a terrace overlooking Lake Como. Photo: Sereno Hotels.

Filario Hotel & Residences, Lezzeno

On the eastern shore of the Como branch, in the Bagnana area, Filario opened in July 2015 on the site of a small factory that once made metal wire. Construction took five years under the rules protecting the area’s landscape and heritage. Its facade uses specially shaped stones typical of Lombardy, connecting the building to the mountain behind it. Alessandro Agrati designed the interiors as layers of textiles, light and distinctive objects. Many pieces were made to measure by craftspeople in nearby Cantù, within the Brianza furniture district. Unlike neighbouring villas, the hotel does not rely on historical quotation. It is now part of Design Hotels.

The Lake Como EDITION, Cadenabbia

One of the major arrivals of 2026 opened in March in Cadenabbia, opposite Bellagio. EDITION entrusted the project to Shanghai-based Neri&Hu with De.Tales. Their transformation of the historic Britannia Excelsior retained much of its facade and the French balconies of the lake-facing rooms. Reducing the number of rooms allowed them to be enlarged, creating 148 rooms and suites. In the lobby bar, a coffered ceiling approximately five metres high frames celadon-green marble. Marble arches and custom furniture recur alongside pieces by Cassina, Vitra and Molteni and lighting by Flos and Artemide. The hotel describes its floating pool as the lake’s largest. The project also features in our coverage of new design-hotel openings in 2026.

Historic villas converted into luxury hotels

The characteristic Lake Como luxury hotel is a former villa conceived for leisure: an aristocratic residence, a terraced garden and a direct relationship with the water. Contemporary design in these settings often works through restoration and selective intervention. Its success depends on how much room it gives the existing building to speak.

Villa d’Este, Cernobbio

Villa d’Este established a model for the lake’s hotels. According to the Lombardia Beni Culturali heritage record, Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio commissioned a magnificent residence between 1565 and 1570 on the site of a demolished convent, to a design by Pellegrino Tibaldi. In 1784, the Calderara family commissioned the new Italianate garden, including the pebble-lined Baroque nymphaeum known as the Mosaico. Caroline of Brunswick acquired the villa in 1814 and gave it its present name. It has operated as a hotel since 1873. The garden’s central axis, the Viale di Ercole, rises towards the sculpture of Hercules and Lichas: a sequence of theatrical landscape compositions that introduces the world of the lake’s villas.

Passalacqua, Moltrasio

Architect Felice Soave built the villa for Count Andrea Lucini Passalacqua in the late eighteenth century, with a music room at the centre of its neoclassical plan. Its history includes Vincenzo Bellini’s stay as a guest of the family. The De Santis family, also associated with Grand Hotel Tremezzo, bought the property in 2018 and opened the hotel in June 2022 after three years of restoration. Its twenty-four suites occupy the frescoed villa, the Palazz, formerly the stables, and the Casa al Lago. BAMO documents its role in restoration planning and interior architecture, working with local architect Venelli Kramer. The De Santis family made the final selections of furnishings, artworks and antiques, layering its own vision over that architectural work. More than twenty types of marble, specialist-laid Venetian terrazzo, Fortuny lampshades, Murano glass and Como silk-taffeta curtains shape the interiors. Terraced gardens descend to the lake.

Passalacqua, Moltrasio: a drawing room in the lakeside villa.

Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como, Blevio

The Blevio complex reopened under the Mandarin Oriental name in spring 2019. It had previously been CastaDiva Resort, a name honouring soprano Giuditta Pasta. As the Lombardia Beni Culturali guide to Como’s villas explains, Pasta had a neoclassical villa remodelled by her uncle Filippo Ferranti between 1827 and 1829. It was demolished in 1904 and replaced with Villa Roccabruna, designed by Carlo Formenti for the Wild family of Turin industrialists. Villa Roccabruna is now the hotel’s heart; one of the original two subsidiary buildings survives. Milan-based Eric Egan’s studio designed the interiors in a restrained neoclassical register, while landscape designer Patrizia Pozzi redesigned the park. The complex comprises twenty-one rooms, fifty-two suites and two private villas.

Belle Époque grand hotels: Art Nouveau and restoration

The central lake retains the grand hotels built for extended stays during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Their formal salons and lake-facing facades now coexist with contemporary interiors and spas.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Tremezzina

Opened by Enea and Maria Gandola on 10 July 1910, Grand Hotel Tremezzo is a landmark of the lake’s Liberty, or Italian Art Nouveau, architecture. Its facade faces Bellagio, and its park adjoins Villa Carlotta. It is now owned by the De Santis family. Particularly interesting is the T Spa, created within Villa Emilia, a building that housed the neighbouring Villa Carlotta’s library. Studio Venelli Kramer combined original decoration, including ceilings painted with flowers and birds in powder pink and Versailles green, with a hammam lined entirely in Lasa marble, Venetian terrazzo floors inlaid with tulips and anemones, and backlit walls. Our coverage of Italian design spas considers further examples of this relationship between architecture and wellbeing.

Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, Bellagio

At the tip of Bellagio, the villa was built for Count Frizzoni between 1850 and 1854. It was enlarged and converted into the Grand Hotel Bellagio in 1873. The interiors combine Empire, neoclassical and Art Nouveau elements. The Bucher family has owned the hotel since 1918 and is now in its fourth generation. A 2024 refurbishment updated rooms, suites and shared spaces and introduced the Luce del Lago Spa, covering more than 1,500 square metres, which the property describes as the lake’s largest. The hotel joined Relais & Châteaux in 2025.

Mistral restaurant, Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, Bellagio: timber, glass and large openings connect the dining room with the lake landscape. They provide an alternative to the larger grand hotels without losing the relationship with the landscape.

Villa Làrio, Pognana Lario

At the centre of Villa Làrio is Il Palazzo, an 1890s villa associated with the Lombardi industrial family. In Pognana, the family owned a quarry and a small lakeside harbour, for decades the only access from the water. Its conversion into a hotel dates to 2015. Today, eighteen suites occupy four buildings: Il Palazzo, Villa Bianca, the Padiglione and the Garden Suite. Much of the furniture is by Como-based Castagna 1939. Clean lines and neutral colours leave space for retained nineteenth-century fireplaces, mosaic floors, mouldings and frescoed ceilings restored by Danilo Carelli. Six-metre-high monolithic granite columns stand on the terrace. The Michelin Guide has awarded the property one Key.

Musa Lago di Como, Sala Comacina

Musa opened in 2022 in an inlet at Sala Comacina facing Isola Comacina, following the refurbishment and expansion of a small existing establishment. A five-star property with around a dozen rooms, it combines Carrara-marble bathrooms, oak and a palette drawn from sunsets over the lake. The material consulted for this guide does not consistently identify an interior designer, so none is named here. Musa represents a recent strand of Lake Como hospitality: a boutique hotel conceived at a domestic rather than monumental scale. This approach also informs the hotel-inspired home, a subject explored in our interiors coverage.

Where should you stay when architecture leads the choice?

The answer depends on the architecture you want to experience. The Como branch combines historic villas with some of the boldest contemporary projects; the central lake offers grand hotels and expansive scenery. Villa d’Este, Passalacqua, Mandarin Oriental and Il Sereno are concentrated between Cernobbio and Torno, within reach of Como and Milan. Around Tremezzina, Cadenabbia and Bellagio, the view opens towards the point where the lake’s three branches meet.

Villas open to visitors provide essential context. In Tremezzina, Villa del Balbianello, now managed by FAI, developed from a Franciscan convent transformed by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini in the late eighteenth century, including its panoramic loggia. Guido Monzino left it to FAI on his death in 1988. The gardens of such houses also feature in our coverage of historic Italian gardens.

What connects Lake Como’s luxury hotels?

A shared relationship with stone, water and the hillside defines many of these projects. Almost every hotel engages with a boathouse, a terrace or a steeply sloping garden. Local stone recurs, while docks and wooden boats become part of the architectural experience.

Craft is another thread: Venetian terrazzo, Como silk and bespoke furniture made in Cantù and Brianza. Family ownership provides a third, from the De Santis family in Tremezzo and Moltrasio to the Buchers in Bellagio. Our guides to Lake Varese hotels, Italian-designed hotels and Italy’s entries in the 2026 World’s 50 Best Hotels list offer related perspectives, without turning this architectural selection into a universal hotel ranking.

Frequently asked questions about Lake Como design hotels

Which Lake Como hotel has the strongest contemporary identity?

Il Sereno in Torno, opened in 2016, offers a particularly coherent project by Patricia Urquiola, from the Ceppo Lombardo facade and walnut-and-bronze staircase to the interiors and boats. Among recent openings, The Lake Como EDITION in Cadenabbia brings Neri&Hu’s design language into a historic building.

Which hotel has the oldest architectural history?

Villa d’Este in Cernobbio. Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio commissioned the residence from Pellegrino Tibaldi between 1565 and 1570. Its Italianate garden and the Mosaico nymphaeum followed in 1784, and Caroline of Brunswick gave it its present name after 1814. A hotel since 1873, it became a model for Lake Como’s villa conversions.

Are Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como and CastaDiva the same hotel?

Yes. The Blevio complex formerly known as CastaDiva Resort reopened as Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como in spring 2019. Its centre is Villa Roccabruna, built in 1904 by Carlo Formenti on the site of Giuditta Pasta’s villa. Eric Egan’s studio designed the later interiors, and Patrizia Pozzi the landscape.

Who designed Passalacqua’s interiors?

The roles are distinct. BAMO documents restoration planning and interior architecture, with Venelli Kramer as local architect, while the De Santis family selected the furnishings, artworks and antiques. The late eighteenth-century villa was designed by Felice Soave for Count Andrea Lucini Passalacqua. Following the family’s purchase in 2018 and a three-year restoration, the hotel opened in June 2022.

Which part of the lake is best for a design-focused stay?

It depends on your interests. Between Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Blevio and Torno, the Como branch combines historic villas with Il Sereno’s contemporary architecture and access from Milan.
