They change materials, languages, markets and even the way they imagine the home; yet they preserve a core of values that passes from one generation to the next, almost without needing to be stated.

This is the thread running through Archi&Interiors’ conversation with Luca Zamagna, CEO of Zamagna Italia, who leads the Cesena-based company together with his sister Susanna. The dialogue stems from the collaboration between Zamagna Italia and Archi&Interiors and retraces the history of a brand founded in the 1960s by Ilario Zamagna and Maria Giulia Battistini, which has evolved from a mainly commercial business into a design-led company.

At its heart lies a pragmatic idea of design: never forcing anyone to choose between aesthetics and function. This is what the Ship, Fusion and Diamond tables express, together with the Duke, Queen and Babylon chairs, the Carla and Mozart sideboards, the Matrix bookcase and the Onda mirror: different pieces, held together by the same search for balance. The same balance also guided the Temptation Collection, born in 2021 from the meeting with Giacinto Muto, founder of MHC, who oversaw its design and art direction: dozens of moods, finishes and materials conceived so that everyone can recognise themselves in the setting they live in.

With Luca Zamagna, we talked about increasingly fluid homes, the journey from drawing to prototype, customisation as an outfit that changes a product’s character but not its identity, the relationship with architects and interior designers, and the international visibility that came with the Salone del Mobile. We also touched on what is perhaps still the most delicate challenge for a family business: passing on its values while leaving those who come next the freedom to interpret them.

Interview with Luca Zamagna, Zamagna Italia: family, Made in Italy and design

Which values of the founding generation still guide the company?

There are principles that belong to Zamagna’s history and that, despite spanning very different phases in the life of the company, have remained essentially unchanged. The first is a deeply family-based business culture, not only in terms of generational continuity but also in the way we understand relationships: personal responsibility, trust, honouring commitments and relationships built over time with our team, suppliers and customers. It is an approach we inherited from our father Ilario and our mother Giulia, and it remains a reference point in the way we work. The other element of continuity is Made in Italy, which for us has never simply been a matter of identity or a statement of principle. Rather, it is a concrete way of conceiving the product, through skills, suppliers, artisans and a manufacturing culture rooted in our country. Over time, the way Zamagna interprets the market and designs its collections has changed profoundly; this attention to origin, to quality and to the relationship with those who help create the product, however, has not. I believe this is the true legacy of the founding generation: not the preservation of an unchanging model, but the ability to evolve without losing one’s points of reference.

What did you change with the second generation, and what did you protect?

The most important change was moving from a mainly commercial company to a design-led company. When my sister Susanna and I joined, we were young, and we felt that the classic product which had defined part of the company’s earlier history no longer fully represented us. Gradually, the language, the materials and the very way of thinking about the product changed; alongside wood, metal, glass, ceramics and more contemporary solutions increasingly came into play. What we did not want to change was the bond with Made in Italy. In the past, it meant selecting and selling good Italian products; today, above all, it means thinking and designing the Made in Italy way, working with a supply chain of Italian suppliers and artisans. Continuity, therefore, does not lie in repeating what our parents did, but in carrying the same values into a different business model.

What does it mean to make design accessible without compromising on quality?

For me, it means above all never forcing the person choosing a product to decide between aesthetics and function. An object made for the home must be beautiful and have presence, but it must also work well every day. A table can have a very striking shape, yet it must be stable, practical and easy to use; a chair must be aesthetically interesting, but when you sit on it, it has to be comfortable.

It is a balance we pursue from the very beginning of development. Aesthetics are often what sparks interest in a product, but then the design has to prove that it can truly live in the home. If making it functional means completely betraying the original idea, we would rather stop and rethink it. For us, beauty must never become an end in itself.

When did you start thinking in terms of rooms rather than individual products?

The decisive shift took shape around 2020. That period also gave us time to ask ourselves what the company’s next step should be. Tables and seating remain a fundamental part of our identity, but we began to wonder what could live around those products and help create a more complete setting.

This reflection also gave rise to the path that led to the Temptation Collection and to a more decisive move into sideboards, bookcases, mirrors and coffee tables. We did not chase the idea of becoming a total living brand at all costs, since some areas, such as upholstered furniture, require production expertise that is very different from ours. Instead, we chose to broaden the range while remaining consistent with what we know how to do, giving designers and clients the chance to imagine no longer a single table or a single chair, but an entire room.

CARLA sideboard with anthracite lacquered frame and doors featuring smoked mirrored-glass inserts. Compared with the homes of the past, where the kitchen, dining room and living room had clearly defined functions and spaces, today we increasingly design for open-plan spaces, in which the same product has to work in different situations.

Floor areas are also shrinking, especially for younger households. This calls for versatile tables and seating, products that work equally well in the kitchen and in the living area, and solutions that can be transformed or extended when needed. At the same time, we cannot forget that there are homes with generous spaces, where the table can once again become an important, almost architectural element. That is why our answer cannot be a single one: we have to design a range that can adapt to different ways of living without losing its identity.

Open-plan interior with FUSION table, bronze metal base and dark oak veneer top. We have a very wide network of clients and agents, and every day we receive feedback from the market. The need may arise for a table with specific features, for a different seat or for a type of product missing from the range. That input becomes the starting point, and from there we try to build the product according to our own taste.

This does not mean simply carrying out what the market asks for. There are also products that stem from our own intuition, which we put forward to see whether the market is ready to embrace them. Our approach, however, remains very pragmatic: we do not want to impose a stylistic exercise. We prefer to listen first and then interpret. This is probably where, little by little, a Zamagna Italia style takes shape.

How important is the first draft of a design?

The first draft matters because it contains the product’s identity, the very thing that convinced us to develop it. After that, however, the real work begins. From the drawing we move on to technical development and then to the first prototype, and that is where a shape imagined on paper has to prove that it can become a real object.

We always try to stay as faithful as possible to the initial intuition, but the design has to pass the test of use, structure and production. If a chair is beautiful but not comfortable, or a table has the right proportions but is not stable, the drawing alone is not enough. We step in, make changes and test again. If the adjustments allow us to preserve the original idea, the project moves forward. If, on the other hand, we would have to distort the product completely to make it work, we may well abandon it.

When is a product truly ready to join the collection?

The decisive moment is undoubtedly the arrival of the first prototype. It is the point at which everything we have discussed and drawn becomes physical, and there are no more shortcuts. It is the moment when we have to check aesthetics, proportions, stability, safety, comfort and functionality.

From there, especially for a table, a second level of development begins. The same design can have glass or glass-ceramic tops, be fixed or extendable, and come in different shapes and sizes. Moreover, not every material can necessarily be used in every configuration: each variant, in fact, has to be checked from a technical and functional point of view. Only when this consistency has been achieved can we truly speak of a product ready for the collection.

How do you manage the freedom of variants without losing identity?

Customisation should be able to change a product’s character, not its identity. I like to think of what happens with a person who can wear an evening outfit, a work suit or something sporty, yet always remains the same person. A similar principle applies to our products.

Through materials, colours and finishes, a table can become more elegant, more contemporary, more understated or more refined; what does not change is its architecture, the signature that makes it recognisable. Furthermore, this freedom is not indiscriminate: we offer a very wide range of samples, but it is made up of solutions that we have tested and know we can guarantee. Over time, the goal is precisely for this consistency to make a Zamagna style ever more immediately recognisable.

The dialogue with architects and designers

What role do architects and interior designers play in Zamagna Italia’s journey today?

It is a channel that is becoming increasingly important for us, and one in which we want to invest. Our task, however, is not to take the architect’s place or interfere with their project. Rather, we need to put them in a position to work well with our products.

This is why tools such as 3D models, room-set images, information on finishes and the ability to configure the product become essential. A designer needs to understand quickly how a table will look with a particular top, or a chair with a specific upholstery, and to place them within their own project. Naturally, the design has to win them over, but today that is not enough: if you do not also offer precise, fast tools to work with, you are unlikely to become a stable part of their design process.

Living area with DIEGO table, brushed-bronze painted metal base and barrel-shaped clear polished glass top. Rather than developing a completely bespoke object each time, we can offer professionals a kind of design vocabulary: sizes, materials, colours and configurations through which they can find the solution most consistent with their project.

At what stage is it most useful to enter the design process?

In our case, mainly in the second phase. We are not a design studio, and we do not want to overlap with the architect’s work. The professional establishes the language of the interior, the proportions, the circulation and the relationships between spaces; we, for our part, need to be very effective when they have to identify the elements to include in that project.

That is where we can offer products, variants, digital tools and technical information. The dialogue often also goes through our retailers and showrooms, which become a meeting point between designer, product and end client. It is a form of collaboration in which the roles remain very clear, and I believe that is precisely what makes it effective.

Temptation and the international outlook

How did the Temptation Collection come about?

The Temptation Collection, launched in 2021, marked a real break with the past. We wanted to raise the brand’s positioning and give the range a more complete and assertive language. Together with Giacinto Muto, we built a collection that was no longer limited to tables and seating, but introduced sideboards, mirrors and other elements capable of telling the story of a whole room.

At first, this leap was almost destabilising. Temptation was so different from what had come before that for a while it seemed to live alongside Zamagna Italia rather than within it. Over time, however, we realised that it was precisely that discontinuity that had shown us the way. It helped change the way we are perceived, raised the overall quality of the brand’s image and also gave us greater confidence on international stages such as the Salone del Mobile in Milan.

How do you translate an individual identity into a coherent room?

Coherence stems first and foremost from the design. Materials and finishes can profoundly transform the way a product is perceived, but underneath there must be a recognisable identity. It is the same principle we apply to customisation: as we said, we do not change the person, we change the outfit.

With Temptation, this approach extends to the whole room. It does not simply mean choosing a colour or combining finishes that happen to be on trend; it means getting the table, seating, sideboard, mirror and accessories to speak to one another through the same sensibility. The mood becomes interesting when it tells the story of the people who live in that space, while still maintaining discipline in the proportions, materials and language of the different elements. It is this coherence that prevents customisation from becoming mere decoration.

Living area with OTELLO table, bronze metal base and barrel-shaped polished amber onyx glass-ceramic top. We are developing more and more relationships with international clients, and I believe that the combination of history, design, Made in Italy, customisation options and breadth of range is one of our most interesting qualities outside Italy too.

Icons and outlook

What is Zamagna Italia’s most iconic design?

If I had to name one, I would choose the Ship table. It is a table we developed several years ago, and over time we have managed to interpret it in a great many configurations: different shapes, fixed and extendable versions, various sizes and finishes. It is probably one of our most versatile and iconic products.

What is interesting is that, despite all these transformations, it remains recognisable. This reflects our way of working well: we start from a strong signature, let it evolve by listening to the needs of the market and broaden its possible uses without losing the original identity. For me, a product stands the test of time precisely when it manages to change along with homes and people, while always remaining itself.

Is there a product that architects and designers particularly love?

We do not have a ranking that would allow us to say which product architects prefer above all others. The movement, too, and the way the product is used must be harmonious; the technology must meet a need without taking centre stage at the expense of elegance. For a designer, this balance is important, because it allows the table to have character and presence in the space while, at the same time, meeting the practical needs of the home. Added to this is the possibility of working with materials and finishes, which makes it easier to fit the table into very different contexts.

SHIP VORTEX barrel-shaped table with bronze metal base and Calacatta Noble glass-ceramic top.

It is 2036.
