It is the fifth edition of an award that turns ten this year and that, edition after edition, has become a genuine observatory on the state of architecture in the region. A total of 171 works were entered, all built in Tuscany in the five years preceding the call, and the jury awarded a nursery school, a theatre, a primary school, an office building and a system of public spaces.

Reading the jury’s statements, we noticed a common thread running through the five projects: none of them starts from a blank slate. Each one engages with something that was there before, whether a factory, a hamlet, a fortress, a modern building or a historic centre, and does so without nostalgia and without mimicry. Four of the five works are also collective places, confirming that design quality in Tuscany today comes not only from private clients but also, and above all, from public buildings and shared spaces.

The announcement came at a press conference attended by Stefania Saccardi, President of the Regional Council of Tuscany, ahead of the award ceremony at the Palazzina Reale in piazza Stazione, home of the Florence Order and Foundation of Architects. The Premio Architettura Toscana is promoted by the Regional Council of Tuscany, the Order of Architects PPC of Florence, the Federation of Architects PPC of Tuscany, the Order of Architects PPC of Pisa, Fondazione Architetti Firenze and Ance Toscana, under the patronage of the National Council of Architects PPC.

The jury, international in outlook, was made up of the architects Junko Kirimoto, who founded Alvisi Kirimoto with Massimo Alvisi, Andrea Maffei, Francisco Mangado and Valerio Paolo Mosco, together with the sociologist Giovanni Semi. The stated criterion is the value of completed architecture: the award does not reward design intentions, but the quality of the finished building and its ability to make a real difference to the territory and to the lives of those who use it. As the rules require, the award goes jointly to designer, client and contractor, because a quality building is the result of the work of everyone involved.

First work: the Manifattura Tabacchi nursery school by Aut Aut Architettura

The Manifattura Tabacchi nursery school in Florence, Aut Aut Architettura. It is the only category that comes with a cash prize of 5,000 euros in addition to the plaque.

The jury recognised a maturity in the project that is far from obvious in a first work, visible in the way it handles two different scales. On one side there is a small, almost urban scale, made of compact volumes arranged to create shared interstitial spaces where the collective life of the nursery takes place. On the other there is a broader scale, entrusted to the flat roof that unifies the whole and anchors it to the context of the Manifattura. A simple composition and essential materials complete the picture, with a result the jury describes as a beauty that is discreet yet present.

Exhibition or interior design: the Teatro di Vitigliano by MDU architetti

The Teatro di Vitigliano in Greve in Chianti, MDU architetti. According to the jury, the operation is a complete success. The new volume, which the jury statement aptly calls the intruder, does not merely introduce a contemporary sign, but also enhances the historic brickwork of the hall, to the point of making it feel part of today’s language. It is the opposite of stylistic restoration: here the new does not imitate the old, the old speaks to the new on equal terms.

New building: the Achille Sclavo primary school in Siena by Fabbricanove

The Achille Sclavo primary school in Siena, Fabbricanove. At its heart is a triangular inner square that acts as a filter between the innovative teaching spaces and the severity of the historic walls. The timber roof structure, the materials and the colour choices sit within the context with a balance of respect and boldness, showing that contemporary architecture can enhance the old rather than be overshadowed by it. The jury praised the sensitivity with which the designers treated it as a historic building in every respect, drawing out potential that had remained unexpressed since it was built. This is not a philological restoration, but a reading that interprets the spirit of the era in which the building was born, without fakes and without mimicry. It is an approach likely to set an example, considering how much of Italy’s built heritage dates from the second half of the twentieth century.

Public spaces, landscape and regeneration: Da piazza a piazza in Certaldo by Eutropia Architettura

Piazza Boccaccio in Certaldo, Da piazza a piazza project by Eutropia Architettura. The project operates on two levels, the design of the individual public spaces and the route that connects them, and this is precisely what the jury rewards: the choice to think at the scale of the town rather than of the single intervention, pointing to a bold and integrated approach to the regeneration of smaller historic centres.

Honourable mentions and selected works: the full picture

Alongside the winners, the jury awarded a series of honourable mentions that complete the picture. For the first work category, Anonima Agricola by Captcha Architecture was singled out for its typological clarity in a rural setting and for an elegant, refined use of materials. In interior design, the Ditta Artigianale café in via Solferino, Florence, by q-bic, where very few materials and the brand’s yellow, applied with the same restraint, create a single continuous space. For new buildings, the Residenza Gignoro by Patrick Stappers, with perforated metal sunscreens that modulate light and privacy and a large central void that lightens the volume.

Restoration received two mentions: the Palazzo degli Affari in Florence, by Elio Di Franco with Politecnica and Consilium, which according to the jury avoids both high-tech excess and historicism, and Balenciaga’s The Plant by MetroOffice Architetti, a reuse project of great plastic strength that exploits the expressive power of the existing building without competing with it. Three mentions went to public spaces: the Porcinai Gardens in Arezzo by abp architetti, which update the design drawn up by Pietro Porcinai in the 1930s for the area in front of the medieval walls; Piazza Nelson Mandela in Pistoia by Chiara Cacciuolo, Andrea Giraldi and Jonathan Calugi, an example of genuine co-design with the local school; and the Terrazza della Repubblica in Viareggio by Stefano Dini with PXC and Paesaggistipercaso, which completes the redevelopment of the waterfront with coloured travertine recalling Futurism and Cubism.

The selection also includes Casa Patio by Studio Santini Santoni and Turignana by Andrea Guidi for first works, Santa Maria Residence by Stefano Tozzi with AE5 Partners for interiors, Fattoria Le Pupille by Studio Benaim, the Chiesa della Visitazione by MDU architetti and the Eugenio Montale state high school by Colucci & Partners for new buildings, Podere Cerreto by Studio ZAG Architecture of Cristiano Bianchi and Borgo Banditaccia by Edoardo Milesi & Archos for reuse, and Piazza San Lorenzo by MICROSCAPE Architecture Urban Design for public spaces.

The exhibition: at the Palazzina Reale until 21 October, then across Tuscany

The award ceremony also opens the exhibition of the winning, mentioned and selected projects at the Palazzina Reale, on view until 21 October. The show will then leave Florence for the other Tuscan provinces: the first announced stop is Pisa, where the local Order of Architects will dedicate the opening day of its 3 Giorni in Ordine, from 28 to 30 October, to the award. The organising committee has also announced a programme of events and guided tours of the works, from the best known to the smaller interventions, a date to add to those in our guide to architecture and design events in Italy.

The ambition, after all, goes beyond the award itself. As Giorgio Cerrai, president of the organising committee, explained, after ten years the aim is to make the prize a permanent tool for knowledge and outreach, able to read the transformations of the territory and help steer them.

The twentieth century as new heritage: the lesson of PAT 2026

Taken together, the works of this edition point in a direction that goes beyond regional borders. The reuse award goes to a modern building, the mentions recognise the reinterpretation of a garden by Pietro Porcinai, the Palazzo degli Affari and the completion of a twentieth-century seafront, and even the new buildings win over the jury when they engage with a fortress or a former factory.

For decades, in a region used to measuring itself against the Renaissance, the heritage to be protected was above all the ancient one. The Premio Architettura Toscana 2026 signals that the outlook is changing: the twentieth century is fully entering the memory to be preserved and reinterpreted, as the iconic houses of the twentieth century also show, and the most interesting contemporary project is the one able to treat it with the same care reserved for historic architecture. It is a trend we have also observed in the best hotel renovation projects of 2026 and one we will keep following, starting from our selection of architecture firms in Florence.

Frequently asked questions about the Premio Architettura Toscana 2026

Who won the Premio Architettura Toscana 2026?

The five winners are the Manifattura Tabacchi nursery school by Aut Aut Architettura (first work), the Teatro di Vitigliano by MDU architetti (interior design), the Achille Sclavo primary school by Fabbricanove (new building), Ufficio Pantin 1 by Barreca & La Varra with ITIstudio (restoration and reuse) and Da piazza a piazza in Certaldo by Eutropia Architettura with a team of designers (public spaces, landscape and regeneration).

How many works took part in the fifth edition?

There were 171 entries, all works built in Tuscany and completed in the five years before the call was published.

Who was on the jury?

The jury was made up of the architects Junko Kirimoto, Andrea Maffei, Francisco Mangado and Valerio Paolo Mosco, and the sociologist Giovanni Semi.

Where can I see the exhibition of the awarded projects?

At the Palazzina Reale in piazza Stazione, Florence, until 21 October 2026.
