Last year the Il Mio Mediterraneo collection told the story of the Mediterranean through its cultural, natural and artistic nuances. This year the narrative changes scale: no longer a territory to describe, but a place in which to stop.

The installation is called “Base Camp” and is designed by Antonio Di Maro, the Neapolitan architect who has been the brand’s creative director since 2025. The project’s subtitle already reads like a statement of method: the desert as home, the rug as architecture.

Base Camp: the gesture of laying a rug on the ground

The starting point is a gesture as old as dwelling itself: laying a rug on the ground and turning a place of passage, the desert, into a space to live in. Di Maro, however, does not reconstruct a camp. What interests him is the suspended time that runs through it, the pause between one stretch of the journey and the next, when the rug stops being an object and becomes a surface, a boundary, the perimeter of a genuine piece of architecture.

In room 22 of EDIT Napoli, a low canopy of fabric held up by nine wooden poles shelters a floor that changes nature: from the stone of a Neapolitan palazzo to a soft, warm, patterned surface. Seven rolled-up rugs lean against the walls like luggage. They speak of a journey already made and one still to come.

Time to stop, between sunset and the fire: one of the images that inspired “Base Camp”. Image courtesy of Magliocco Tappeti

No chairs: low poufs, a lantern, a tray

At the centre of the room the installation does away with conventional seating. In its place are low poufs that bring the body closer to the ground and make the experience more intimate and shared. A lantern and a tray complete the scene, evoking a moment of rest, welcome and conviviality.

This is where the project shows its intelligence. Lowering the centre of gravity of a space changes the way we look at it: the rug is no longer something we walk over without thinking, but the plane on which we sit, lean and talk. The editors see in this choice a thread linking “Base Camp” to Di Maro’s research into neuroarchitecture, that is, into how forms, materials and posture affect the wellbeing of the people who inhabit a space.

Naples as an oasis, between arrivals and departures

The choice of city is not neutral. Naples, traditionally a place of arrivals, exchanges and cross-pollination, becomes in the project’s imagination the oasis where the journey finds a new destination. “Base Camp” is a temporary threshold between movement and permanence: a place to stop, to meet and to feel at home. And then to set off again.

The rug as a path and as a threshold: another suggestion behind Antonio Di Maro’s project for Magliocco Tappeti.
