After seasons of throwaway gadgets, design gifts for Christmas 2026 come back to a simple question: will this object live with the person who receives it, be used every day, perhaps even be handed down? That is why twentieth-century icons, still produced by the same companies that first put them in their catalogues, are once again the most coveted gifts. They cost less than people think, they have a story to tell, and they never go out of fashion because they were never in fashion to begin with.

Here is the short answer for those in a hurry. Under €50, give glasses, mugs, plates and books by great designers. Between €50 and €150 you will find the great kitchen icons and small portable lamps. Between €150 and €500 come mouth-blown glass vases, historic table lamps and collectible miniatures. Above €500, choose a piece that becomes furniture, or a limited edition. Everything else depends on the person, and that is where to begin.

How to choose a design gift that lasts

A good design gift has three qualities: a recognisable design, everyday use and serious manufacturing. The first ensures the object makes sense outside its box; the second that it does not end up in a cupboard; the third that it can be repaired, added to or bought again, identical, in twenty years. It is the difference between an object inspired by an icon and the real icon, produced under licence from its designer or their estate.

The second rule is to look at the recipient’s home, not your own. A sculptural kettle is perfect for someone with an open kitchen and a love of tea, pointless for someone who only drinks espresso. The third is to let go of the surprise at all costs: if an object comes in different colours or sizes, keeping a gift receipt is not a lapse of style, it is common sense. To find your way among the companies behind the most loved objects, we have gathered the best design homeware brands, while those after the historical picture will find the 20 most iconic Italian design objects.

Design gifts under €50

Under €50, the most beautiful design is the kind you hold in your hand. Oiva Toikka’s Kastehelmi glasses for Iittala, from 1964, with their raised dewdrops, cost around €25 for a pair and turn an aperitivo into a small ritual. Alfonso Bialetti’s Moka Express, born in 1933 and almost unchanged since, costs under €30 in the three-cup size and is perhaps the most widespread piece of Italian design in the world: giving it to a friend abroad means giving them a piece of domestic history, which we tell in our history of the moka pot.

In the same bracket sit the plates from the Hybrid collection that the duo CTRLZAK designed for Seletti, half Western porcelain and half Eastern decoration, sold individually from just over €25, and Muller Van Severen’s Arcs candleholders for HAY, lacquered metal arches priced between €35 and €45. Those who prefer paper will find almost every book here too: more on that below.

What are the best design gifts under €100?

Between €50 and €150 you find the kitchen icons, and this is the bracket where the balance between price and story is most generous. Philippe Starck’s Juicy Salif lemon squeezer for Alessi, designed in the late 1980s, costs around €90 and is more kitchen sculpture than utensil: the person who receives it knows this, and that is precisely the point. Alessandro Mendini’s Anna G. corkscrew, from 1994, starts at around €60 and is perfect for anyone who sets the table with a sense of humour. Michele De Lucchi’s Pulcina coffee maker, from 2015, designed to stop the flow at the right moment and avoid a burnt taste, sits under €70 in its basic version.

Also under the €150 mark are Enzo Mari’s Timor perpetual calendar for Danese, from 1967, turned by hand every morning; Ferruccio Laviani’s Take portable lamp for Kartell, from 2003, a small transparent polycarbonate lampshade at around €130; and HAY’s Arcs vase, just over €100. For the story of the Crusinallo company, its families of designers and the pieces that made it famous, see our portrait of Alessi.

Design gifts between €150 and €500

This is the bracket of gifts that stay in the family. Alvar Aalto’s Aalto vase for Iittala, introduced in 1936 and still mouth-blown in Finland, costs around €180 in the 12-centimetre size and around €250 in the 16-centimetre one: it is the kind of object you choose once and find again, years later, in your children’s home. A wall plate from Piero Fornasetti’s Tema e Variazioni series, with its enigmatic female face reinvented in hundreds of versions since the 1950s, costs around €160, as do the house’s scented candles in their decorated porcelain pots. For more ceramics and glass, see our selection of iconic design vases.

Lamps to give between €150 and €500

Light plays the leading role here. Giancarlo Mattioli’s Nessino for Artemide, designed in the 1960s, costs around €200 and brings a mushroom of pop colour to a bedroom. Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby’s Bellhop for Flos, a rechargeable portable lamp, comes in a 2026 edition with new glossy black and green finishes, at around €200. Ferruccio Laviani’s Bourgie for Kartell, the baroque lampshade in clear polycarbonate, costs around €390, and there is also a limited Christmas version. Isamu Noguchi’s Akari 1A, the mulberry-paper lantern produced by Vitra as part of the light sculptures series begun in 1951, costs around €360. Lighting lovers will find the full story in our piece on iconic lamps.

Bellhop, a rechargeable portable lamp by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby. To get to know the company that brought plastic into the best room in the house, read our history of Kartell.

Design gifts over €500

Above €500 the gift becomes furniture, and it is worth choosing it the way you would choose a piece of furniture. Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni’s Snoopy for Flos, from 1967, with its marble base and enamelled reflector, costs over €1,000; so does Vico Magistretti’s Atollo for Oluce, from 1977, the most recognisable volume of light in Italian design. Those who want to go further will find special editions of the great classics, such as those periodically devoted to the Arco, the Castiglioni floor lamp whose history we tell in our piece on the Flos Arco lamp.

Among the launches at Milan Design Week 2026 was a capsule that speaks to collectors: Alessi and C.P. Company reinterpreted Richard Sapper’s 9090 espresso maker in black PVD, in 999 numbered pieces at around €275, an accessible exception in this bracket, alongside cups by Jean Nouvel and a tray by Enzo Mari given the same finish. Alessi also brought back into production, under the art direction of Andrea Incontri, the La Bella Tavola porcelain service designed by Ettore Sottsass in 1993. Kartell, which showed twenty-five new products at the Salone, added Ferruccio Laviani’s Aura table lamp. Proper Christmas collections usually arrive between late October and November.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-31403" src="https://www.archieinteriors.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/regali-di-design-caffettiera-9090-cp-company-alessi.webp" alt="Alessi 9090 espresso maker in black PVD from the Alessi and C.P. The Vitra miniature is the studio favourite: Gerrit Rietveld’s 1918 Red Blue Chair at 1:6 scale costs around €290, a set of five coloured Panton Chairs about €240. Richard Sapper’s Tizio for Artemide, from 1972, in its Micro version at €300 to €370, is the desk lamp that raised generations of designers. Enzo Mari’s Timor, already mentioned, is a cultured and less obvious choice.

Miniatures Collection, iconic twentieth-century chairs at 1:6 scale. Avoid “architect” gadgets with printed rulers and pencils: they are the gift almost everyone receives and almost no one uses.

Design gifts for keen cooks and new homeowners

For those who cook, the rule is simple: a beautiful object that really works. Michele De Lucchi’s Plissé kettle for Alessi, its body pleated like fabric, starts at around €100; Michael Graves’s 9093 kettle from 1985, with its bird-shaped whistle, around €170. Large appliances with a recognisable design are a chapter of their own, and the curious can read the story of Smeg and its 1950s-style fridge.

Those who have just moved need objects that give instant identity to rooms that are still bare: a Componibili for the bathroom, a portable lamp that moves from room to room while the home takes shape, Charles and Ray Eames’s Hang It All coat rack from 1953, with its coloured wooden balls, at around €315. A statement vase or a Fornasetti plate hung in the hallway does the rest. Lovers of materials will find ideas among handmade ceramics, where a one-off piece often costs less than an industrial icon, and among modern paintings for the first empty wall.

Design gifts for children and collectors

Children deserve design as much as adults do, and some pieces were made just for them. Eero Aarnio’s Puppy for Magis, the stylised polyethylene dog that is both toy and seat, costs around €77 in the small size. Vitra’s Eames Elephant, born in plywood in 1945 and now produced in plastic, costs around €300. Marc Newson’s Rocky rocking horse for Magis approaches €1,000, but it is an object passed from one sibling to the next. And then there are Bruno Munari’s books for Corraini, starting with Nella notte buia (In the Darkness of the Night), which in 1956 invented a new way of turning pages.

For collectors, numbered editions and series completed over time are what count. Vitra miniatures, Fornasetti plates, the 9090 in 999 pieces and Seletti objects such as Marcantonio’s 2015 Monkey Lamp, at around €250, are gifts that can be repeated year after year to build a collection. The same goes for artists’ books and for the special runs of Aalto vases, which Iittala offers in rotating colours.

Tema e Variazioni, wall plates by Piero Fornasetti. Phaidon publishes The Design Book, a compact encyclopaedia of the objects that shaped design history, at around €25: the ideal starting point for beginners. Taschen has built its list on illustrated monographs of the great architects, from Le Corbusier to Frank Lloyd Wright, in formats ranging from pocket size to collector’s volume. In Italy, Electa publishes the catalogues of major exhibitions and architecture monographs, while Corraini, in Mantua, looks after Munari’s work and publishes artists’ books that are design objects in their own right.

Our editors’ tip is to choose a book about a designer whose object the recipient already owns: the Aalto monograph next to the vase, the Sapper one next to the Tizio. For more titles, see our selection of design and architecture books.

Experience gifts: design museums and designers’ homes

An experience lasts longer than many objects, and Milan offers some extraordinary ones. The ADI Design Museum, in Piazza Compasso d’Oro, displays the historic collection of the award founded in 1954 on an idea by Gio Ponti. At the Triennale, the Museo del Design Italiano tells the story of twentieth-century Italian design through its objects. The Studio Museo Achille Castiglioni, in Piazza Castello, is visited in small guided groups by appointment and preserves intact the workshop where the Arco and the Snoopy were born. A short walk from San Babila, the Fondazione Studio Museo Vico Magistretti opens the designer’s studio in Via Bellini. Outside the city, in Noviglio, Kartell’s company museum can be visited free of charge by appointment.

A tribute to Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in Flos imagery. One last idea is a year’s subscription to an architecture or design magazine: it arrives for twelve months and each issue is a reminder of who gave it. Before buying a ticket, check the museum’s website for opening hours, current exhibitions and booking arrangements, which often change over the holidays.

How to wrap a design gift sustainably

The most elegant wrapping is the kind that does not get thrown away. Japanese furoshiki, a square of fabric knotted around the object, becomes a gift in itself: a scarf, a linen napkin, a tea towel. Recycled kraft paper with cotton string and a sprig of fir is the simplest solution and goes in the paper recycling; metallic, glittered or laminated papers, on the other hand, are usually not recyclable. Many design objects come in carefully designed boxes: keeping them, and using them for the gift, is also a way to preserve the object’s value over time.

A festive table with Alessi tableware and bar objects. To decorate the table and the home in the same spirit, see our guide to Christmas decoration brands.

When to order to receive gifts before Christmas?

For items in stock, it is wise to order by the first days of December, when couriers start to slow down under holiday volumes. Many design pieces, however, are not ready on the shelf: glass lamps, some sizes and colours of vases and made-to-order items list delivery times of three, four and sometimes five weeks. For these, mid-November is the practical deadline.

Online shoppers in the EU have extra leeway: the Consumer Rights Directive grants 14 days to withdraw from a distance purchase, counted from delivery. Many retailers extend this period over the holidays, but that is a commercial policy and should be checked case by case. The alternative for latecomers is a concept store: in Milan, the historic 10 Corso Como is worth a visit even just for inspiration.

Design gifts: frequently asked questions

What design gift does everyone like?

Everyday objects with a recognisable design win almost everyone over: a designer moka pot, a mouth-blown glass vase, a rechargeable portable lamp. They work because they are used every day and do not ask the recipient to change their interiors.

What can I give a design lover for under €100?

Under €100 you will find great kitchen icons, such as Starck’s lemon squeezer or Mendini’s corkscrew, designer glasses and plates, calendars and illustrated books. It is the bracket with the best balance between price and design history.

What do you give an architect for Christmas?

Miniatures of iconic chairs, a historic desk lamp, a monograph on a master or a visit to a studio museum are the most appreciated gifts. Themed accessories with printed rulers and set squares are best avoided.

How can you tell if a design object is authentic?

An original is produced by the company that holds the rights to the design, carries the brand and the designer’s name, comes with recognisable packaging and documentation and is sold by authorised retailers. A price far below the list price is almost always the sign of a copy.

Is it better to give an object or an experience?

It depends on the recipient. For someone whose home is already full, a design museum ticket or a visit to a designer’s studio leaves a memory without taking up space; for someone furnishing a new home, a well-chosen object becomes part of it for years.

Design gifts for Christmas 2026: affordable icons and objects built to last, by budget and recipient, plus design books and experiences.

Under €50: Iittala's Kastehelmi glasses (1964), the Bialetti Moka Express (1933), Seletti's Hybrid plates and designers' books.

Between €50 and €150, the kitchen icons: Starck's Juicy Salif for Alessi (around €90), Mendini's Anna G. corkscrew (1994), Enzo Mari's Timor calendar (1967).

Between €150 and €500: Iittala's Aalto vase (since 1936, €180-250), Flos Bellhop lamps in the 2026 edition, Noguchi's Akari, Kartell's Componibili.

For architects and collectors: Vitra miniatures, Sapper's Tizio, the Alessi x C.P.
