Around eighty stallholders, from craftspeople to producers and food stalls, line the Passer promenade in front of the Kurhaus and spill into a sequence of squares running from Piazza Terme to Piazza della Rena. Merano is one of the five Original South Tyrol Christmas Markets, the group that brings together the historic markets of the region’s towns.

For anyone who looks at cities with a designer’s eye, Merano is a case study. It is a nineteenth century spa town shaped around the visitor, with its promenades, cafés and grand public buildings, and in December the market traces exactly that backbone. The stalls, which the organisers describe as environmentally conscious and contemporary in design, make no attempt to imitate the alpine hut: they line up along the river like temporary street furniture.

Our advice is to arrive in the afternoon light and stay into the evening, when the white façade of the Kurhaus is mirrored in the water and the riverside walk takes on an entirely different character.

When does the Merano Christmas market open in 2026?

The Merano market opens on Thursday 26 November 2026 at 5pm and closes on Wednesday 6 January 2027, with Christmas Day as its only closing day. Opening hours differ between craft stalls and food stalls, which stay open later, especially at weekends.

Information

2026/27 edition

Dates

26 November 2026 to 6 January 2027

Opening ceremony

Thursday 26 November, 5pm

Craft stalls

Monday to Thursday and Sunday, 10am to 7pm; Friday, Saturday and public holidays, 10am to 8pm

Food stalls

Monday to Thursday and Sunday, 10am to 9pm; Friday, Saturday and public holidays, 10am to 10.30pm

Closures and special hours

Closed on 25 December; on 24 and 31 December craft stalls 10am to 3.30pm, food 10am to 5pm; on 6 January everything 10am to 6pm

Where

Passer promenade, Piazza Terme, Piazza della Rena, Winter Promenade, Piazza Duomo, Piazza del Grano

Getting there

Trains from Bolzano every 30 minutes on weekdays, hourly on Sundays and holidays; from the station, buses 1, 1A, 1B, 3 and 4. Stalls are grouped into food, gastronomy and crafts, alongside the Solidarity Hut, run by local charities, and the Craft Stube.

Cross the river and you reach Piazza Terme, turned into a small winter landscape with an ice rink, the Sky Bar and the Kugln, six colourful spheres where you can dine by reservation. Piazza della Rena, behind the cathedral, hosts a village with a large chalet ringed by smaller huts, while the Winter Promenade, Piazza Duomo and Piazza del Grano complete the route.

The result is a linear market that you cross on foot from one side of the centre to the other, looking at the town as you search for a present. That is the key difference from markets gathered in a single square, and the reason it deserves at least an unhurried half day.

What makes the Merano market different?

The Merano market is different because it rests on a town designed for staying, not for passing through. The promenades along the Passer were laid out for the spa guests who came from all over Europe, and the very name of the Winter Promenade tells you which season it was designed for. In December that purpose becomes legible again: you walk, you pause, you carry on.

The second element is the conversation between eras. Within a few hundred metres you move from the Art Nouveau dome of the Kurhaus to the contemporary restraint of the thermal baths, with the river acting as the hinge. Compared with the Bolzano Christmas market, which is more urban and commercial, Merano moves at a slower pace and on a more domestic scale, which is why many visitors choose it as the second stop on the same trip.

Which architecture should you see in Merano during the markets?

The first building to look at is the Kurhaus, the spa hall that forms the backdrop to the market. Opened in 1874, it owes much of its present appearance to the major extension of 1912 to 1914 led by the Viennese architect Friedrich Ohmann, who added the dome and the Art Nouveau ornament. Inside, the concert hall with its marble columns, stucco work and ceiling frescoes remains one of the most theatrical Art Nouveau interiors in the Alps.

The Merano Kurhaus, extended by Friedrich Ohmann in 1912 to 1914. The contrast between the low arcades and the openness of the riverside explains better than any text how Merano grew, from merchant town to spa resort.

What should you buy at the Merano Christmas market?

At the Merano market it pays to look for genuine craftsmanship from the surrounding valleys and South Tyrolean workshops: wooden objects, ceramics, woollen textiles, candles and glass decorations. The Craft Stube and the Solidarity Hut are where the link with the region is most direct, and some of the lanterns made by a social workshop even light the evening guided walks.

Our rule of thumb is the one you would apply to any design object: an honest material, visible craftsmanship and no concessions to kitsch. A solid wood chopping board or a boiled wool blanket will outlast any themed decoration and tell you far more about where it comes from. For food, Piazza della Rena offers guided tastings and workshops for adults, a good way to understand local produce before you buy.

Where to stay in Merano if you love design?

The most fitting choice is the Hotel Terme Merano, at Piazza Terme 1, which connects directly to the thermal baths: guests reach the pools in their bathrobes through an internal passage. The furnishings and layout were designed by Matteo Thun, with clean lined rooms and plenty of natural light.

Alternatively, ImperialArt, at Corso della Libertà 110, occupies a building with an 1899 Art Nouveau façade and suites designed individually by Merano artists, no two alike. If you want to extend the stay with some wellbeing, we have gathered the most beautiful design spas in Italy and a selection of design hotels immersed in nature.

Frequently asked questions about the Merano Christmas market

When does the Merano Christmas market open in 2026?

The market opens on Thursday 26 November 2026, with the opening celebration at 5pm, and stays open until 6 January 2027.

What are the opening hours of the Merano market?

Craft stalls open from 10am to 7pm, until 8pm on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays.
