The Archi&Interiors editorial team has chosen them the way a designer would: what counts is the quality of the public space, genuine craftsmanship and the architecture you pass on the way from one square to the next. The 2026 season starts early. Turin’s Luci d’Artista light up on 23 October, Florence opens in Piazza Santa Croce on 14 November and Trento in the second half of November, while Bolzano, Merano and Brixen open on Thursday 26 November and stay open until 6 January 2027.

Seen through a designer’s eyes, a Christmas market is an exercise in temporary urbanism: identical wooden huts that measure out a square, lights that redraw the façades, routes that make you walk through the historic centre. When it works, it reveals the city; when it fails, it hides it behind plastic and neon kitsch. Every city below belongs firmly in the first category.

We have organised them by region, from South Tyrol down to Naples. For each one you will find the design case, the key dates and a link to our full guide, with opening hours, architecture to see and places to stay.

When do the 2026 Christmas markets open in Italy?

Italy’s 2026 Christmas markets open between mid and late November, with South Tyrol opening on 26 and 27 November and closing at Epiphany. The exceptions are Turin, where the season of light begins in October, and Florence, whose market in Piazza Santa Croce closes on 20 December. Milan, Verona, Venice and Rome publish their exact calendars close to the holidays, so for these cities the table gives the usual period.

City

2026/27 dates

What to see

Bolzano

26 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, closed on 25 December

Arcades, Piazza Walther, Museion

Merano

26 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, closed on 25 December

Kurhaus, Teatro Puccini, Merano Thermal Baths

Brixen

26 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, closed on 25 December

Cathedral, cloister, Hofburg, civic library

Bruneck and Sterzing

27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027

Zwölferturm, Messner Mountain Museum Corones

Trento

Second half of November 2026 to early January 2027

Cathedral, Buonconsiglio Castle, MUSE

Milan

Late November to Epiphany; Oh Bej! Wooden huts, pedestrian squares and railway stations a few minutes from the old towns make this the easiest region to visit without a car.

Bolzano: Italy’s largest Christkindlmarkt

The Bolzano Christmas market opens on Thursday 26 November 2026 at 5pm in Piazza Walther and runs until 6 January 2027, closing only on 25 December. It is the largest in Italy, spread across Piazza Walther, Viale Stazione and Via dell’Isarco, a layout that makes you walk through the old town, from the medieval arcades, built as a public space designed for winter, to the glass façade of the Museion. The full route, with opening hours and architecture, is in our complete guide to the Bolzano Christmas market.

The Christmas market in Piazza Walther, Bolzano. Here you do not so much visit the market as walk it: around eighty stallholders line the Passer promenade in front of the Art Nouveau Kurhaus, with Martin Dülfer’s Teatro Puccini and Matteo Thun’s glass volume for the Thermal Baths as the backdrop. It is the spa town showing off its talent for hospitality, as we explain in our account of Christmas in Merano between Art Nouveau and spa culture.

Brixen: the prince bishops’ square

Brixen sets its market in the square of ecclesiastical power: from 26 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, Cathedral Square hosts 44 huts between the baroque cathedral, the frescoed Gothic cloister and the Hofburg of the prince bishops. The 2026 edition marks 35 years since the market began in 1991, and until 9 January 2027 the Hofburg façade once again becomes a screen for the Oops 2 light and music show. A few steps away, the civic library by Carlana Mezzalira Pentimalli shows how contemporary architecture can be grafted onto an ancient fabric, as our guide to the bishops’ town at Christmas explains.

Bruneck and Sterzing: valley and summit

Bruneck and Sterzing are markets on an intimate scale, which is precisely what makes them so legible: both are open from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, every day from 10am to 7pm. In Sterzing the huts gather at the foot of the Zwölferturm, whose 25 bell carillon plays at 10.30am and 4.30pm; from Bruneck you can ride up to Kronplatz, where Zaha Hadid carved the Messner Mountain Museum Corones into the summit, opened in 2015. The double itinerary is in our guide to Bruneck and Sterzing, from Gothic towers to mountaintop museums.

Trento: the Council city and Renzo Piano

Trento usually opens before the South Tyrolean towns: the market in Piazza Fiera and Piazza Mostra runs from the second half of November 2026 to early January 2027, with 77 stallholders from across Trentino and South Tyrol, and it is one of the few that traditionally opens on Christmas afternoon. The design story lies in the contrast: huts at the foot of Buonconsiglio Castle and, a quarter of an hour’s walk away, Renzo Piano’s MUSE in the Le Albere district, built on a former industrial site. The full route is in our guide to Trento from Buonconsiglio to the MUSE.

Which Christmas markets should you see in northern Italy?

Beyond the Alps the market changes character: it becomes a reason to read cities that behave like large exhibitions in December, between artists’ light installations, nineteenth century galleries and Roman stone.

Milan: Christmas in the design capital

Milan has no Christkindlmarkt and has no need to imitate one: at Christmas the design capital is best seen as a city wide exhibition. The first event is the Oh Bej! Oh Bej! fair, around 7 December, the feast of Saint Ambrose, by the Castello Sforzesco; the huts in Piazza del Duomo usually arrive in early December and stay until Epiphany. Between the iron and glass vault of Giuseppe Mengoni’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Giovanni Muzio’s Triennale and OMA’s Fondazione Prada, Milan’s festive season is mapped out in our guide to Christmas in Milan, from Oh Bej Oh Bej to the Duomo.

Turin: Luci d’Artista

Turin is the most radical case: Christmas is not hung from the balconies, it is exhibited. Luci d’Artista returns from 23 October 2026 to 10 January 2027 for its twenty ninth edition, adding Vittoria Caldera’s new work Decoding Light, and turns the baroque city into an open air gallery of contemporary art, from Mario Merz’s numbers on the Mole Antonelliana to the squares of the centre. The work by work route is in our guide to Turin’s Luci d’Artista.

Luci d’Artista turns Turin into an open air gallery. The Marché Vert Noël opens on Friday 20 November 2026 at 6pm and stays in Piazza Chanoux from 21 November to 6 January 2027, every day from 10am to 8pm, while the 22 metre façade of the Roman theatre is a few minutes’ walk away. Lovers of carved wood should come back on 30 and 31 January 2027 for the Sant’Orso Fair: dates and route are in our guide to the Aosta Christmas market.

Verona and Venice: Christmas in Carlo Scarpa’s cities

In Italy’s art cities the market is a guest, not the host. In Verona the huts usually appear from the second half of November to late December between Piazza Bra, at the foot of the Arena, and Piazza dei Signori, the perfect excuse to return to Castelvecchio, the museum redesigned by Carlo Scarpa. Venice, by contrast, spreads Christmas across its campi, with the antiques market in Campo San Maurizio, held there since 1970, a short walk from Scarpa’s Olivetti Showroom. Both cities feature in our guide to Christmas in Italy’s art cities.

Which are the most beautiful Christmas markets in central and southern Italy?

Heading south, the market tradition blends with that of the nativity scene, and the architectural reference points become Renaissance and baroque.

Florence and Rome: Santa Croce and Piazza Navona

Florence’s market in Piazza Santa Croce is one of the few with 2026 dates already confirmed: from 14 November to 20 December, with more than fifty huts in front of the Franciscan basilica and Brunelleschi’s Pazzi Chapel in the cloister. Rome answers with the festive fair in Piazza Navona, from early December to 6 January, which has more than two centuries of history and fills the outline of the Stadium of Domitian, between Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers and Borromini’s concave façade for Sant’Agnese in Agone. Dates and routes are in our feature on Florence, Rome, Verona and Venice at Christmas.

Naples: San Gregorio Armeno, the street of nativity scenes

San Gregorio Armeno is not a market but a set designers’ workshop a few hundred metres long, in a historic centre that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. The workshops are busy all year, at their most intense in November and December, and the Neapolitan nativity scene is designed here like miniature architecture, figure by figure and wing by wing. The essential companion is the Cuciniello Nativity at the Certosa di San Martino, with around eight hundred eighteenth century pieces, as told in our guide to Naples’ nativity street.

The nativity workshops of San Gregorio Armeno, Naples. Photo Luca Aless, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

How do you choose the right Christmas market if you love design?

Our rule of thumb is simple: choose the city before the market. The huts look alike everywhere, the architecture does not, and that is what separates an afternoon of shopping from a trip you remember. The same goes for what you buy: honest materials, visible craftsmanship and a shape that still works after Epiphany.

If you want a compact trip by train, follow the Brenner line, where Trento, Bolzano and Brixen sit on the same route and Merano is a regional train ride from Bolzano; if you want Christmas as an exhibition, choose Turin or Milan. To add a night outside the city there is our selection of design hotels immersed in nature, to look beyond Italy there is our map of European Christmas markets from Vienna to Copenhagen, and for everything else, from the home to the table, our index of design led Christmas ideas.

Frequently asked questions about the best Christmas markets in Italy

Which are the best Christmas markets in Italy in 2026?

Our pick is Bolzano, Merano, Brixen, Bruneck and Sterzing, Trento and Aosta for the Alpine tradition, Turin and Milan for Christmas as an exhibition, Verona, Venice, Florence and Rome for the art cities, and San Gregorio Armeno in Naples for the nativity scene.

When do the 2026 Christmas markets open in Italy?

Most open in the second half of November 2026: Trento around the 20th, Aosta on the 21st, Bolzano, Merano and Brixen on the 26th, Bruneck and Sterzing on the 27th.
