The Archi&Interiors editorial team has chosen six, using a test the tourist portals ignore: the city must be worth the trip even without its market. Vienna opens first, with Schönbrunn from 6 November and the Rathausplatz from 13 November; Copenhagen lights up Tivoli on 13 November, Munich opens on 20 November, Berlin on the 23rd, Basel on the 26th and Strasbourg on Friday 27 November 2026.

The case is simple. The German and Central European Christmas market began as a civic market in cathedral and town hall squares, and those squares are surrounded by some of the most important architecture of the twentieth century and of today. Visit them in December with a designer’s eye and you find the same low light, the same warm materials and the same sense of domestic space that Nordic and Viennese design turned into a language.

For each city you will find the key dates, the design case and a link to our full guide, with opening hours, architecture and places to stay.

When do Europe’s Christmas markets open in 2026?

Europe’s Christmas markets open between 6 and 27 November 2026, and most of them close before Christmas. That is the main difference from South Tyrol: in Munich the last day is 24 December and in Basel the 23rd, while Vienna, Copenhagen and some of Berlin’s markets run into early January.

City

2026/27 dates

What to see

Vienna

Rathausplatz from 13 November to 26 December; Schönbrunn from 6 November to 6 January 2027

Secession, Otto Wagner’s Karlsplatz pavilions, Looshaus, MAK

Copenhagen

Tivoli from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027; Nytorv from 6 November; Højbro Plads from 14 November to 20 December

Nyhavn, Black Diamond, BLOX, Designmuseum Danmark

Strasbourg

Opens on Friday 27 November 2026

Cathedral, Petite France, Neustadt, Palais Rohan

Colmar

23 November to 29 December 2026; food market and big wheel until 3 January 2027

Maison Pfister, Musée Unterlinden

Basel

26 November to 23 December 2026, daily from 11am to 8.30pm

Vitra Campus, Fondation Beyeler

Berlin

Most from 23 November 2026; Humboldt Forum from 18 November; the longest until 3 January 2027

Philharmonie, Neue Nationalgalerie, Neues Museum, James-Simon-Galerie

Munich

20 November to 24 December 2026

Pinakothek der Moderne, BMW Welt, Olympiapark

Why are Vienna and Copenhagen the capitals of a design led Christmas?

Vienna and Copenhagen are the two cities where Christmas maps onto a precise chapter of design history: the birth of modernism on the Danube and the Danish idea of domestic comfort on the Baltic. They also have the longest seasons.

Vienna: Christmas as an exhibition on the birth of modernism

In Vienna Christmas is best visited like an exhibition: the Wiener Christkindlmarkt on the Rathausplatz runs from 13 November to 26 December 2026, every day from 10am to 10pm, while Schönbrunn has the longest season, from 6 November to 6 January 2027. For crafts, we recommend Spittelberg and Art Advent on Karlsplatz, from 13 November to 23 December. Between markets you will find Joseph Maria Olbrich’s Secession of 1898, Otto Wagner’s Karlsplatz pavilions and the bare façade of the Looshaus: the whole itinerary is in our guide to the Vienna Christmas markets and the Secession.

The Wiener Christkindlmarkt in front of Vienna’s city hall. The H.C. Andersen market on Nytorv opens on 6 November, Tivoli switches on its Christmas on 13 November and stays open until 3 January 2027, and Højbro Plads runs from 14 November to 20 December. From the Nyhavn canal to Schmidt Hammer Lassen’s Black Diamond and OMA’s BLOX, the city is mapped out in our guide to a Copenhagen Christmas, from Tivoli to Danish design.

Which Christmas markets should you see in France, Switzerland and Germany?

Along the Rhine and in the heart of Germany you find Europe’s oldest Christmas markets and, a few tram stops away, some of the campuses and museums architects study most closely.

Strasbourg and Colmar: Christmas as a lesson in urban history

Strasbourg lays claim to the oldest market: the Christkindelsmärik began in 1570 and has been held in Place Broglie since 1871. The 2026 edition opens on Friday 27 November with eight markets on the Grande Île, at the foot of the cathedral whose 142 metre spire was completed in 1439, while Colmar, half an hour away by regional train, runs from 23 November to 29 December 2026 among half timbered houses that seem designed for winter. Both cities, from the Petite France to the UNESCO listed Neustadt, feature in our guide to the Strasbourg and Colmar Christmas markets.

Strasbourg’s Christkindelsmärik, founded in 1570. From Claraplatz the number 55 bus takes about twenty minutes to the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, where Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, Álvaro Siza, Herzog & de Meuron and SANAA stand side by side, while in Riehen Renzo Piano’s Fondation Beyeler is gradually opening Peter Zumthor’s new ensemble. Photo Brücke-Osteuropa, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Berlin: dozens of markets, from Scharoun to Chipperfield

Berlin does not have one Christmas market, it has dozens, and the best way to see them is as stops on an architecture itinerary. The Humboldt Forum’s Wintermarkt opens on 18 November 2026 and almost all the others on 23 November: the Gendarmenmarkt WeihnachtsZauber runs until 31 December, Charlottenburg until 27 December, and the Rotes Rathaus and Gedächtniskirche markets until 3 January 2027. At the Kulturforum you move from Hans Scharoun’s 1963 Philharmonie to Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie, restored by David Chipperfield and reopened in 2021: the route is in our guide to Berlin’s Christmas markets and architecture.

Munich: tradition and experiment

Munich is where a Christkindlmarkt of long tradition sits alongside the world’s first design museum and Frei Otto’s Olympic roof. From this year the Marienplatz market opens earlier, on Friday 20 November 2026, and closes on 24 December at 2pm, with 137 stalls and the Kripperlmarkt in front of Alter Peter. Stephan Braunfels’s Pinakothek der Moderne, home to Die Neue Sammlung, Coop Himmelb(l)au’s BMW Welt and the Olympiapark complete an itinerary you will find in our guide to Munich from Marienplatz to Frei Otto.

How do you get to Europe’s Christmas markets from Italy?

The train is the best choice for Munich, Vienna and Basel, while Berlin and Copenhagen are easier by air. Munich can be reached through the Brenner Pass with direct services from northern Italy; Vienna has direct connections, including night trains; Basel is served by trains from Milan through Switzerland, and from there Strasbourg and Colmar are close.

Berlin and Copenhagen have direct flights from Italy’s main airports, with trains and metro lines into the centre in minutes. Our advice is to book December weekends early and, where you can, choose weekdays: the squares are quieter and the architecture is easier to appreciate.

How do you choose the right European Christmas market if you love design?

The rule is to choose the theme before the city. If you want to understand the birth of modernism, go to Vienna; if you are interested in the culture of living, choose Copenhagen; if you want a campus of contemporary architecture in a single day, head for Basel; if the museum as a project is your passion, go to Berlin and Munich; and if you want the historic city as a stage set, choose Strasbourg and Colmar.

If you would rather stay in Italy, our selection of the best Christmas markets in Italy starts from Piazza Walther in Bolzano and ends in Naples. For the rest of the cluster, from the festive table to gifts, there is our editorial index of a design led Christmas.

Frequently asked questions about Christmas markets in Europe

Which are the best Christmas markets in Europe in 2026?

Our pick is Vienna, Copenhagen, Strasbourg and Colmar, Basel with the Vitra Campus, Berlin and Munich: six cities where the market sits alongside architecture and museums that are worth the trip on their own.

Which is the oldest Christmas market in Europe?

Strasbourg lays claim to the Christkindelsmärik, founded in 1570 and held in Place Broglie since 1871. Munich also has a Christkindlmarkt of long tradition, on Marienplatz since 1972.

Which European markets stay open after Christmas?

Schönbrunn in Vienna stays open until 6 January 2027 and Tivoli in Copenhagen until 3 January, while in Berlin the Rotes Rathaus, Gedächtniskirche and Humboldt Forum markets run until 3 January. Munich closes on 24 December and Basel on the 23rd.

Which European Christmas market is closest to Italy?

Munich is the easiest to reach through the Brenner Pass, while Basel is the most convenient from north west Italy by train from Milan. Both work well over a long weekend.

How many days do you need for a Christmas market trip in Europe?

We suggest two or three days: one for the markets and one for architecture and museums.
