In Italy the 2026 season already has a few dates confirmed by organisers, starting with Artigiano in Fiera, back at Fiera Milano from 5 to 13 December, and the December calendar of the San Salvario Emporium in Turin. Other markets, born as neighbourhood events, follow their own rhythm and announce dates close to the holidays.

Our view is that these markets say a great deal about how we live today. After years of online shopping, there is a growing appetite for objects with a recognisable author, a short supply chain and a story to tell whoever receives them. The self-production market is the domestic equivalent of the workshop: you touch the material, ask how it was made and take home something that does not exist in a thousand copies.

Ceramics, textiles and small lamps: the repertoire of a Christmas design market.

What is a self-produced design market?

It is a market where the seller is also the person who designs and makes, with no middlemen and often in limited runs. Self-production, which has a long tradition in Italian design, lets a young designer skip the manufacturer and reach the public directly.

For buyers the difference is tangible. Christmas design fairs put the prototype and the finished product on the same table, hand-thrown ceramics next to a 3D-printed lamp, fabric dyed in small batches next to a numbered print. The price reflects the work rather than the marketing, and the conversation with the maker is part of the purchase. Our advice is to arrive early, in the first hours of opening, while the one-off pieces are still on the stalls.

Market

City

2026 dates

Where

Holy Shit Shopping

Berlin

28 and 29 November

Haus der Visionäre

Artigiano in Fiera

Milan

5 to 13 December

Fiera Milano, Rho

Holy Shit Shopping

Hamburg

5 and 6 December

Messehalle B1

San Salvario Emporium

Turin

Sundays 6 and 13 December; 19 and 20 December

Piazza Madama Cristina; OGR

DecomelArt

Bologna

4 to 24 December

Via San Giuseppe

Antica Fiera di Santa Lucia

Bologna

6 November to 27 December

Portico dei Servi, Strada Maggiore

Where are the Christmas design markets in Milan?

Milan has at least three, each very different: the vast international crafts fair, the vintage market in a converted factory and a Christmas trail created by architecture practices. Together they show the city of design at its best, even in December.

Artigiano in Fiera is the giant of the category: from 5 to 13 December 2026 it fills the halls of Fiera Milano in Rho, with entry by free pass booked online. It is not a design market in the strict sense, which is exactly why it needs a strategy: we suggest choosing two or three halls in advance and looking for work in real materials, wood, glass, textiles and ceramics, rather than souvenirs.

At the opposite end of the scale is East Market at via Mecenate 88/A, a former aircraft factory of around three thousand square metres where, one Sunday a month, usually the penultimate, some three hundred exhibitors sell and swap vintage, mid-century pieces and collectables. The December edition traditionally takes on a festive tone and is the place to find a piece of twentieth-century design to give. For the squares and traditional wooden chalets, see our guide to Milan’s Christmas markets.

Architecture lovers should also follow MilanoDesign Xmas, the trail devised by TOWANT which in 2025 brought Christmas trees designed by more than forty Milanese practices into showrooms across the city. Dates for a possible 2026 edition have not yet been announced.

Where can you find self-produced design in Turin and Bologna?

In Turin the reference point is the San Salvario Emporium; in Bologna it is the historic centre, where craft markets multiply beneath the porticoes. In both cities the Christmas market is also a way of reading the architecture that hosts it.

The San Salvario Emporium, run by the Emporium association within the ARCI network, takes place on the first Sunday of the month in piazza Madama Cristina and gathers traditional and digital craft, design, illustration and independent publishing. For December 2026 the organisers’ calendar lists Sundays 6 and 13 in the square and the weekend of 19 and 20 at the OGR on corso Castelfidardo, the former late nineteenth-century railway workshops that have become one of the city’s cultural hubs. Round off the evening with Turin’s Luci d’Artista, which turn the centre into an open-air gallery.

Turin’s OGR, home to the San Salvario Emporium on 19 and 20 December. Here the neighbourhood matters more than the event.

In Rome, Mercato Monti, an urban market running since 2009 in the district of the same name, is the go-to address for emerging designers and small independent makers.

In Florence the design market is the workshop itself. In the Oltrarno, between Santo Spirito and San Frediano, studios still practise goldsmithing and silversmithing, bookbinding and marbled paper, marquetry and gilding, lost-wax casting, leatherwork and bespoke shoemaking: a gift bought here has its maker a few metres away. In Naples the same applies to San Gregorio Armeno, the street of nativity craftsmen, which our guide to the nativity workshops of San Gregorio Armeno explores studio by studio.

Which Christmas design markets are worth a trip in Europe?

Two above all: Holy Shit Shopping in Germany, the longest running, and the FAD Design Market in Barcelona, the one most closely tied to design culture.

Holy Shit Shopping has been running since 2004 and calls itself, with tongue in cheek, the mother of all design markets: more than two hundred young labels, artists and creatives spanning sustainable fashion, interior design, art and food, in urban venues across several cities. The official 2026 calendar lists Leipzig on 21 and 22 November at Westbad, Berlin on 28 and 29 November at Haus der Visionäre and Hamburg on 5 and 6 December at Messehalle B1. In Berlin it pairs well with the route in our guide to Berlin’s Christmas markets.

In Barcelona, FAD, the association that brings together Catalan design professionals, holds its Design Market every year in mid-December at Disseny Hub Barcelona, the building by MBM Arquitectes, the practice of Oriol Martorell, Oriol Bohigas and David Mackay, which opened in 2014 on plaça de les Glòries. Exhibitors are selected by a committee drawn from FAD’s member associations, and the set-up is often entrusted to design studios. The 2026 dates have not yet been published.

Disseny Hub Barcelona, home of the FAD Design Market. Photo Canaan, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

How do you choose a gift from a designer or maker?

With the same criteria you would use for any design object: honest material, legible craftsmanship, a clear purpose. If all three are missing, it is seasonal decoration and will last until Twelfth Night.

We suggest three questions to ask at the stall. Who designed it and who made it? Where, and in how many pieces? How is it used and cared for? A maker who answers precisely, who can tell you where the clay comes from or why they chose that wool, is almost always a maker who works well. One meaningful piece beats five impulse buys: a bowl, a table lamp or a hand-woven throw stays in a home for years.
