What sets a stay apart is a hotel that knows what to do with it: ten design hotels in the mountains, signed by architects who turned the Alpine landscape into a project.

Design mountain hotels have become the most cultivated answer to the question that returns every November: where to spend Christmas and New Year away from the city without giving up the quality of space. Our editors have chosen ten addresses across the Dolomites, South Tyrol, the Aosta Valley, Switzerland and Austria using one strict rule: every property carries the signature of a recognisable designer and a documented completion date, from Peter Zumthor to Matteo Thun, from Mario Botta to the South Tyrolean studio noa*.

The argument is simple. For decades the Alpine hotel imitated itself, multiplying pine panelling, flower boxes and fake haylofts. The hotels in this selection do the opposite: they read the mountain as material, meaning larch, stone, clay and concrete, and as climate, and they build rooms where the landscape comes in through the window rather than being quoted by the wallpaper. Compared with our selection of design hotels immersed in nature, these are different properties, chosen for winter.

Why choose a design mountain hotel for the holidays?

Because at Christmas architecture works harder than in any other season. Short days make light, warmth and acoustics decisive, and that is where good design shows: in the fireplace that organises the lounge, in the window turned towards the last of the sun, in the spa that becomes the hotel’s piazza when the temperature outside drops below freezing.

There is also a subtler reason, one any trend scout will recognise. Contemporary Alpine luxury has shifted from abundance to restraint: less decoration, more real material, more silence. Staying here is a way of testing an idea of living before taking it home.

Which are the most beautiful design hotels in South Tyrol and the Dolomites?

In South Tyrol the three addresses not to miss are a resort reached only by cable car, a family hotel rewritten in a minimal key and a suspended pool.

Vigilius Mountain Resort, Lana

The Vigilius Mountain Resort sits on Monte San Vigilio above Lana and can only be reached by cable car, which already makes it a place apart. Designed by Matteo Thun and completed in 2003, it is a long, low volume that follows the line of the slope, screened by horizontal larch louvres and topped by a green roof. Inside, clay walls with built-in radiant panels separate the sleeping area from the bathroom. Twenty years on, it remains a manifesto for building with very few materials. Christmas in Merano is just a few kilometres down the valley.

Hotel Schgaguler, Castelrotto

In Castelrotto, at the foot of the Alpe di Siusi, the Hotel Schgaguler is the perfect case study in renewing a family hotel without knocking it down. Peter Pichler Architecture kept the three gabled volumes of the 1986 building and wrapped them in a concrete exoskeleton with tapered surfaces, deep on the south side, where it forms shaded loggias, and shallow to the north. White render mixed with lime recalls the rock of the Dolomites; inside, chestnut, local stone and open bathrooms with freestanding tubs set the tone. The project was unveiled in 2018.

Hotel Hubertus, Valdaora

In Valdaora, in the Puster Valley, the Hotel Hubertus owes its fame to the pool designed in 2016 by noa* (network of architecture): a 25 metre basin that cantilevers out for more than 17 metres, about 12 metres above the ground, linking the old wing to the new one. Anthracite stone edges and a glazed floor erase the line between water and landscape, with the Kronplatz in the background. On Christmas Eve the Bruneck markets are a short drive away.

Where to stay in a design hotel in the Aosta Valley?

In the Aosta Valley the two most interesting addresses are recent: one in Courmayeur, beneath Mont Blanc, the other in the Ayas valley, beneath Monte Rosa.

Le Massif, Courmayeur

Le Massif stands on the site of the former Hotel Majestic, which lay empty for more than seventeen years, a few steps from the centre of Courmayeur. Architect Fabrizio Gandolfo conceived it as a contemporary tree house, with stone façades and decorative elements in laser cut Corten steel; the project dates from 2019. The spa with its pool and the chalet at Plan Checrouit, on the slopes, complete a hotel designed for winter.

Aethos Monterosa, formerly CampZero, Champoluc

In Champoluc, in the Ayas valley, the hotel born as CampZero and now run under the name Aethos Monterosa is the most radical project in the valley. Studio Bladidea built it between 2016 and 2018 as a five star base camp: a ventilated larch façade that weathers naturally to grey, a stone grey metal roof, an indoor climbing hall and, in winter, a frozen waterfall beside the building where guests really do climb. In Aosta, the Marché Vert Noël rounds off the festive programme.

Which Swiss design hotels are worth booking for Christmas?

In Graubünden, within a few hours’ drive, there are three hotels every designer should see at least once.

7132 Hotel and the Vals thermal baths

In Vals, Peter Zumthor’s thermal baths, completed in 1996, are one of the most influential buildings of the late twentieth century: a monolith of local quartzite slabs carved out by pools, slits of overhead light and silence. The hotel next door, 7132 Hotel, has added rooms by Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma, Thom Mayne with Morphosis and Zumthor himself, who chose a dark plaster polished like stucco for his. Staying here in December means bathing outdoors while it snows, inside architecture that seems hewn from the mountain.

The outdoor pool of Peter Zumthor’s thermal baths in Vals. Only the trees of light rise from the ground, glass sails with a plant-like geometry that bring daylight down to the pools and glow at night like lanterns on the snow. On December evenings it is one of the finest architectural sights in the Swiss Alps.

Mario Botta’s Bergoase at the Tschuggen Grand Hotel. UNStudio, Ben van Berkel’s Dutch practice, designed the hammam, renovated half the rooms and built an apartment block, while architect Hans-Jörg Ruch reworked the other half. The Red Bar, opened in 1998, is a work by Pipilotti Rist with Gabrielle Hächler, and the timber terrace is by Tadashi Kawamata.

James Turrell’s Skyspace at Hotel Castell, Zuoz. Photo Kamahele, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Which Austrian design hotels are signed by architects?

In Austria the two best examples come from regional studios working with an almost artisanal rigour, in the Salzburg region and East Tyrol.

Hotel Wiesergut, Hinterglemm

In Hinterglemm, in the Salzburg region, the Wiesergut is an exercise in purity. Gogl Architekten, the studio of Monika Gogl, renovated and extended a traditional hotel, completing the complex in December 2012: a main building, garden suites and a wellness house, built in local timber, natural stone, glass and exposed concrete. The architects also designed the interiors and much of the bespoke furniture.

Gradonna Mountain Resort, Kals am Großglockner

At the foot of the Großglockner, Austria’s highest mountain, the Gradonna Mountain Resort by reitter_architekten, working with Strolz, was completed in 2013. A tower hotel on a concrete base is flanked by 41 chalets in cross laminated solid timber, clad in larch shingles and set on the slope without cutting into it. The resort is largely car free and heated by a wood chip plant: for families at Christmas, it is a perfect village.

How to choose a design mountain hotel for New Year?

The first criterion is access. Places like the Vigilius, reached only by cable car, or the almost car free Gradonna offer perfect seclusion but need some planning around transfers; a hotel in the village, such as Le Massif, lets you move between village and slopes.

The second is the spa, which in winter becomes the hotel’s true shared space: Zumthor’s baths in Vals, Botta’s Bergoase in Arosa and the suspended pool at the Hubertus are projects that justify the journey on their own. Those who would rather stay in Italy will find more ideas in our guide to the most beautiful design spas in Italy.

The third is timing. The weeks between Christmas and Epiphany are the most sought after of the year: our advice is to book early and check each hotel’s own website for its winter opening calendar.

Frequently asked questions about design mountain hotels

What is the most famous design mountain hotel in the Alps?

In terms of architectural renown the benchmark is still Vals, in Switzerland, with Peter Zumthor’s thermal baths completed in 1996 and 7132 Hotel, whose rooms were designed by Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma and Thom Mayne.

Which design hotels are there in the Dolomites?

Among the most interesting are the Hotel Schgaguler in Castelrotto, renovated by Peter Pichler Architecture, and the Hotel Hubertus in Valdaora, with its suspended pool by noa*. Matteo Thun’s Vigilius Mountain Resort lies above Lana, near Merano.

Are there design hotels in the Aosta Valley?

Yes. Le Massif in Courmayeur, designed by Fabrizio Gandolfo, and the former CampZero in Champoluc, now Aethos Monterosa, by Studio Bladidea are the region’s two most accomplished contemporary addresses.

When should you book a mountain hotel for New Year?

As early as possible. The stretch between Christmas and Epiphany is the busiest of the winter season, and design hotels, often small, sell out months in advance.

Ten design mountain hotels for Christmas and New Year 2026 in the Dolomites, the Aosta Valley, Switzerland and Austria: hotels by Peter Zumthor, Matteo Thun, Mario Botta, noa* and Peter Pichler, seen through a designer’s eyes.

Ten design mountain hotels across South Tyrol, the Aosta Valley, Switzerland and Austria, each with a documented designer and date.

The most iconic: Peter Zumthor's thermal baths in Vals (1996) and 7132 Hotel, with rooms by Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma and Thom Mayne.

In South Tyrol: Matteo Thun's Vigilius Mountain Resort (2003), Peter Pichler's Hotel Schgaguler (2018) and the Hubertus suspended pool by noa* (2016).

In the Aosta Valley: Le Massif by Fabrizio Gandolfo in Courmayeur (2019) and Studio Bladidea's former CampZero in Champoluc (2016 to 2018).

For Christmas and New Year, book well ahead and check each hotel's winter opening calendar.

334,396
["post-33884","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-architecture","category-hospitality

Design mountain hotels for Christmas and New Year 2026

<meta property="og:site_name" content="Archi &
