New Year’s Eve is the one night of the year when the table is designed not around a meal but around a moment, midnight, which is why it calls for light, reflection and movement rather than decoration.<\/em><\/p>\n

An elegant New Year’s Eve table<\/strong> follows different rules from a Christmas one. There is no family ritual to honour and no menu fixed by centuries of habit; instead there is a party whose rhythm shifts through the night, from dinner to anticipation, the toast and whatever comes after. The table has to carry every one of these phases, and we think it should be treated as a small piece of stagecraft, with a set of gold, black, mirrors and glasses that changes character as the candles burn down.<\/p>\n

Our argument is that New Year’s Eve has become the most architectural celebration of the winter. More and more people host at home, in small groups, and for one night the house turns into a place to be lived both standing and seated, between the dining table, the buffet console and the sofa. Designing the table means designing these transitions: where people eat, where they toast, where they put their glass down.<\/p>\n

Which colours and materials make an elegant New Year’s Eve table?<\/h2>\n

Gold, black and ivory make the most successful palette, because they respond best to artificial light at night. Black adds depth and acts as a backdrop, ivory softens, gold picks out the details. Our rule is to choose a single metal, gold or silver, and use it with restraint: chargers, cutlery or candlesticks, not all of them at once.<\/p>\n

For plates, graphic black and white work better than gilded porcelain. The Labirinto<\/strong> service, designed by Gio Ponti in the 1920s while he was artistic director of the Doccia manufactory and now produced by Ginori 1735<\/strong> in black among other colours, is a pattern of broken lines chasing one another around the rim without ever touching: a Deco motif perfectly suited to a night that looks back to the Roaring Twenties. Textiles complete the picture: velvet or heavy linen in black, midnight blue or ivory, with napkins to match.<\/p>\n

Smoked glass is the other material of the evening, because it filters light without dimming it. The High Rise tumblers by Keiji Takeuchi for Ichendorf Milano, also available in smoke, show how a glass can bring the mood of the night to the table without any decoration at all.<\/p>\n

How do you use mirrors and light on a New Year’s Eve table?<\/h2>\n

A mirror is the most effective light multiplier you can put on a table. A runner of mirrored panels, or a few mirrored trays down the centre, doubles the candle flames and the reflections in the glasses, and gives the table the sparkle people usually look for, mistakenly, in glitter.<\/p>\n

Choose unscented candles in different heights, gathered on reflective surfaces, and dim and warm the general lighting in the room, as we explain in our guide to Christmas lights at home<\/a>. Which glasses should you choose for the midnight toast?<\/h2>\n

The choice is between flute, coupe and tulip, and each tells the story of a different New Year’s Eve. The flute is tall and upright, holds the bubbles for longest and is the easiest to carry while standing. The coupe is the most theatrical glass, bound up with images of early twentieth century receptions, but it lets the bubbles escape and is easily spilled in a crowded toast.<\/p>\n

The tulip glass, wider at the bottom and narrower at the top, is the compromise we prefer at the table, because it lets the wine’s aromas open up without sacrificing the bubbles. A practical tip: allow at least one and a half glasses per person, because at midnight someone has always lost theirs.<\/p>\n

How do you lay the table for a seated New Year’s Eve dinner?<\/h2>\n

A seated New Year’s Eve dinner calls for a more formal place setting than Christmas, but lighter decoration. A charger, graphic plates, cutlery laid in the order of the courses, two glasses per guest plus the toasting glass, which can wait in the kitchen until midnight. The centrepiece should be low and luminous, because conversation lasts for hours and nobody should have to look at the others through an arrangement.<\/p>\n

A place card for every guest, handwritten on heavy card, is the detail that makes the evening truly formal.<\/p>\n

How do you set up an elegant standing buffet for New Year’s Eve?<\/h2>\n

A standing buffet works when guests can help themselves with one hand, because the other is holding a glass. That means bite sized food, small plates, small napkins and as little cutlery as possible, with the buffet set out on a console or a table pushed against the wall, leaving the middle of the room free.<\/p>\n

We suggest dividing the buffet into stations, savoury, sweet and sparkling, each with its own light. Keep the bottles in an ice bucket at one end, away from the food, with a tray of clean glasses beside it and another for used ones.<\/p>\n

What should be on the table at midnight?<\/h2>\n

At midnight you need three things: chilled glasses ready on a tray, bottles within reach, and lentils. Lentils with cotechino or zampone, two Italian pork sausages, are the traditional Italian New Year’s dish: their shape is said to recall coins, and as far back as ancient Rome people exchanged small bags of lentils on the last day of the year as a wish for prosperity.<\/p>\n

Our advice is to serve the lentils in small individual bowls, dark or white, arranged on a tray as a course in their own right, rather than bringing a pot back to the table after dinner.
