Poltrona Frau was founded in Turin in 1912 by Renzo Frau, a Sardinian entrepreneur who combined elegance with craftsmanship and transformed the armchair into a symbol of Italian design. In 1962 the company was acquired by the Nazareno Gabrielli group; the following year production moved to Tolentino in the Marche region, where all its furniture is still made today.

The armchair remains at the creative heart of the brand, complemented by sofas, beds, tables, chairs and accessories that combine comfort with an unmistakable style.

The company's history features outstanding collaborations. In 1965 Gio Ponti designed the innovative Dezza armchair, while models such as Chester, Vanity Fair and Archibald have since become icons of Made in Italy. Each piece expresses exceptional craftsmanship through Pelle Frau® leather, solid-wood structures and meticulous attention to detail.

An authentic product can be recognised by the fire-branded mark on its wooden frame, which is difficult to reproduce, together with the certificate of authenticity supplied with every piece. Poltrona Frau has been part of the US-based Haworth group, a global leader in contract furniture, since 2014 and joined the Haworth Lifestyle federation of prestigious design and luxury brands in 2025.

International growth has led Poltrona Frau to open showrooms in the world's leading design capitals. Milan is a key destination, with the Via Manzoni flagship store welcoming design enthusiasts and professionals. A dedicated outlet also operates in Lombardy, while Tolentino is home to the production facility, the Poltrona Frau Museum and the Gallery Outlet.
