Interview with Rivolta: the silent grammar of leather in high-end living

At a time when design often risks being consumed by image, Rivolta continues to work on another idea of value: slower, more tactile, and more difficult to display. Not the kind of luxury that is immediately recognizable, but the kind that can be measured in the strength of a seam, in the depth of a leather selected and worked with expertise, and in the ability of an upholstered piece to inhabit a space without seeking effect.

To explore this vision, we interviewed Elena Rivolta, voice of the company and interpreter of a family and manufacturing journey that began in Brianza in 1973. It is a story rooted in the culture of Italian upholstered furniture, yet today it looks toward the international interior design world through material, handcraft, proportion, comfort, and service.

This is where the concept of Leather Couture takes on a precise meaning: not an aesthetic formula, but a way of understanding design as a tailored gesture, built through invisible details and technical choices that become language.

Through collections designed by Giuseppe Viganò, Daniele Lo Scalzo Moscheri, and projects developed internally, Rivolta expresses a vision of living that brings together craft culture, formal research, and lasting quality. It is a path that brings Brianza heritage into international living spaces, from private residences to professional environments and custom-made projects. In this interview, Elena Rivolta reflects on identity, personalization, and that discreet form of luxury that today appears less like a trend and more like a cultural choice.

Rivolta was founded in Brianza in 1973 and carries more than fifty years of upholstered furniture culture. How does this origin still influence the way you design and understand excellence today?

The company was born from my father’s passion, from a creative idea, and from the desire to turn manual talent into a profession. It was a life project guided by passion, by the desire for independence, and by the search for authentic contact with clients.

From that passion came a great love, represented by an elegant and refined style that appeals to many people who may have different ideas and projects, but who want to develop and share them with us.

In your story, heritage and innovation, artisanal savoir-faire and contemporary vision coexist. What is the hardest balance to maintain when you want to evolve without losing your identity?

It means inheriting a heritage connected to history, values, and craftsmanship, which is the soul of Made in Italy, and making it live in an era where business models and new technologies seem to take over.

Mastery, technical expertise, and love for one’s work must continue to be handed down over time.

At Rivolta, leather never appears as a simple covering, but as a living, sensory material, able to define the character, comfort, and perception of the product. What does this material truly represent for you?

Leather is the soul of our collections. Working with this material means not only understanding its characteristics, potential, and limits, but also knowing how to select it through the finest cuts.

Every piece is the expression of a tailored approach made of details and extremely high-level technical skills. Those who recognize the value of our products also recognize the value of long experience acquired over the years, translated into exclusive and timeless objects.

The theme “Leather Couture” suggests an almost sartorial approach, made of cutting, stitching, handcraft, and precision. How important is the ability to turn technical expertise into a recognizable language?

Personal style is a projection of life itself. Our story is heritage, experience, tradition, and taste. Ours is an exclusive world of leather objects, enhancing a culture of quality excellence through the celebration of detail.

The human hand and eye form the soul of our collections, which stand out for a unique and recognizable style. Our company is made of people who listen, share, and experiment. Our products are born from passion for our craft and from the desire to tell our story.

In models such as Ascot, Forrest Light, Selene, Palace, Oscar, or Ego, there is a constant research into the relationship between structure and softness, visual presence and hospitality. How much work lies behind each product to achieve comfort that is also formally rigorous?

The value of our products is, in fact, a fascinating journey through material and experience. This creates emotion, and emotion becomes value. Exclusive objects change spaces and the way we live. The smallest detail matters: from the holes that allow goose down to breathe, to the double knot at the end of every seam to secure the thread. Everything is important, everything has meaning in the construction of a perfect product.

Every component exists because it is the best of its kind, from the down to the thread, in terms of quality, hygiene, and durability. Luxury is a mosaic of details, a universe of sensory experiences that create beauty.

For Rivolta, personalization does not seem like a final addition, but part of the project itself: materials, finishes, dimensions, combinations, and service. How do you build the right balance between tailor-made work and coherence with the original design?

The path of our company has led us to look at spaces and the needs of living with eyes that have learned to accept and love other horizons and landscapes, while allowing our hands to explore other textures, woven with mastery.

It always makes us proud to see our projects completed. From beauty comes harmony and well-being, which are the true essence of the home and of the spaces where people work and live.

In your Journal, it is clear that Rivolta can enter private residences, professional spaces, and very different international contexts without distorting its language. What truly changes in the way you design and support the product when you move from a domestic living space to a professional or hospitality environment? And which elements must remain intact so that the brand continues to express its identity?

Whether for a residential project or a professional environment, our products bear witness to an art of know-how that belongs to the culture of our country, which has always been a cradle of extremely valuable craftsmanship.

The secret of this excellence lies in handmade work, which today more than ever becomes the essential ingredient for authentic design.

In your vocabulary, service is not an accessory element, but part of the same idea of excellence, together with quality, uniqueness, and tailor-made work. How does this approach take shape in the relationship with architects, interior designers, and clients, especially when a project requires a precise balance between customization, timing, formal coherence, and execution quality?

Availability, welcome, cordiality, speed of response, and punctuality: this is how we understand the relationship with our clients.

Relationships with people are fundamental. Understanding their needs and tastes. Bringing lifestyle and aesthetics together. Making our expertise and knowledge available to develop their idea.

Today, the market is often driven by speed, immediate image, and a logic of rapid consumption. Rivolta, instead, insists on durability, perceived quality, real comfort, and coherence over time. What does it mean today to build a quiet and lasting form of luxury?

We are artisans. Craftsmanship challenges fashion. It focuses on an intrinsic quality that does not need loud logos to be recognized, and on an aesthetic that improves with age. The goal is to create a sense of calm and lasting harmony within the environment.

This year we created our latest catalogue. It brings together all the products from 2000 to today. We wanted to call it Timeless. Our products are not influenced by time. They always remain current, beautiful, and valid.

In more than fifty years of history, there must have been one product or project that, more than others, condensed Rivolta’s language and became an emblematic reference. Which model or project is the most iconic for the brand, and why? We would also like to understand how it was born: from which intuition, need, or moment in the company’s path did it emerge, and what does it still say about your identity today?

From the need to change, to evolve, and to expand our market, I believe the major turning point came in 2000, when the collaboration with Giuseppe Viganò began. With him, the most iconic models in our collection were born. Today, after more than 20 years, they still convey beauty and relevance. I can mention some of them, such as the XL sofa, FORREST, MILANO, and the OLIMPIA chair, entirely upholstered in leather.

Your path seems to move in a precise direction: Brianza craftsmanship, cosmopolitan vision, a close relationship with material, and dialogue with design. Looking at international markets, what do you think has changed most in the way high-end living is interpreted today?

We have the duty to remain faithful to our DNA. The artisanal tradition linked to the territory and to the culture of excellence is at the foundation of our work. It is a tradition based on knowledge of materials, attention to detail, passion for technique, and aesthetic sensitivity.

We are in 2026: contemporary living demands even more tactile quality, authentic comfort, personalization, durability, and measure. In this scenario, where do you imagine Rivolta? Which traits of your DNA must remain intact, and which evolutions seem necessary to continue being relevant in international interior design?

We are a flexible, versatile, and dynamic company. We adapt to projects, make them our own, and develop them with love and expertise. Every creation comes from internal development, from the search for proportion, from comfort achieved through the choice of materials, and from obsessive attention to detail. Respect for the client, responsibility, and a culture of work must remain the guiding principles that define our reality.
