Porro is a historic company in Italian design, specialising in furnishing systems, wardrobes, bookcases, storage units, tables and accessories. Founded in 1925 in Brianza by the brothers Giulio and Stefano Porro, it began as an artisanal workshop producing furniture for the Milanese bourgeoisie. Today, one hundred years after its foundation, the brand is internationally recognised for an essential, architectural and deeply Made in Italy approach to furniture.
The history of Porro has developed through family continuity, wood culture and research into finishes. In addition, the shift towards modern design, which began in the 1950s, led the company to define a precise language: formal clarity, geometry, functionality and technical quality in every detail.
Since 1989, the collaboration with Piero Lissoni, the brand’s art director, has strengthened Porro’s contemporary identity. Alongside this vision, the company has worked with Italian and international designers such as Bruno Munari, GamFratesi, Nao Tamura, Yabu Pushelberg, Christophe Pillet and Jean Marie Massaud. As a result, the Porro catalogue has become a coherent universe, where living systems, night systems, tables and accessories share the same measured design approach.
The strength of the brand lies in its ability to turn furniture into interior architecture. Bookcases, wardrobes, walk-in closets, partitions and storage units do not simply organise space; they define proportions, transitions, solids and voids. For this reason, Porro is appreciated by architects and interior designers looking for bespoke, flexible solutions able to integrate elegantly into residential and contract environments.
Collections and iconic products
Porro collections express a design approach based on customisation, order and compositional freedom. Each product is created to build essential, flexible and sophisticated interiors.
- Storage system: designed by Piero Lissoni with CRS Porro, it is one of the brand’s most representative systems for wardrobes, walk-in closets and bespoke storage. In addition, it allows open compartments, transparent doors, closed modules, finishes and internal accessories to be combined.
- System: designed by Piero Lissoni with CRS Porro, it is a modular bookcase and wall system for living areas, studies and contract spaces. Books, storage units, technology and display surfaces coexist within an essential and rigorous system.
- Load-it bookcase: designed by Wolfgang Tolk, it has been a Porro long-seller since 1995. Its slim structure, wall panels and lightweight shelves define a graphic, discreet and timeless presence.
- Ferro table: designed by Piero Lissoni, it was created in 1994 and remains one of the most recognisable icons in the catalogue. Its folded and welded sheet metal creates a sculptural, simple and strongly architectural form.
- Romby chair: designed by GamFratesi, it combines comfort and formal precision. The upholstered seat dialogues with the conical solid wood base, creating a balance between softness, geometry and material quality.
- Origata console: designed by Nao Tamura, it stems from a reflection on kimono techniques and waste reduction. For this reason, it clearly expresses Porro’s research into material, sustainability and constructive simplicity.
Porro therefore stands out for its ability to create furniture and systems that shape space without overpowering it. Its collections express an evolved Made in Italy identity, built on proportion, material research, industrial precision and artisanal sensitivity.
