Verderame_Wall Painting and Africa: two interpretations of matter, between oxidative transformation and metallic light.
In contemporary design, the surface is no longer a mere covering but an active device in defining space. Matter becomes a design tool, able to modulate light, depth and identity through its own visual behaviour.
Within Novacolor’s research, Copper Motion defines a design field dedicated to interpreting copper as a material system, through two families of solutions that explore its perceptual potential: oxidative transformation and controlled metallic reflection.
Surfaces with oxidative copper evolution
The Verderame_Wall Painting system interprets the oxidised copper effect through a decorative process that develops progressively.

The surface is built up through layered application, where the interaction between successive coats generates a controlled chromatic transformation.
The final effect is characterised by:
- a tonal evolution between warm and cool components
- material depth created by overlapping layers
- perceptual variation that is not uniform but designed
The result is a surface in which oxidation becomes a decorative language, governed by the application cycle.

Surfaces with metallic reflection

In parallel, Africa interprets the metallic dimension of the system through a decorative finish based on metallic fillers.
Although it is not a copper-based system, it reworks copper’s luminous perception through:
- soft, velvety textures
- plays of light and controlled reflection
- surface patterns with a strong tactile and decorative character
The surface does not imitate the oxidation of copper; instead, it conveys a similar perceptual quality, linked to the vibration of light and the visual depth of metal.
Moreover, Africa incorporates a functional component related to indoor air quality, actively helping to reduce formaldehyde (ISO 16000-23 test), and is formulated with binders from sustainable biomass certified REDcert2, contributing to a lower environmental impact.

Copper Motion represents the synthesis of Novacolor’s research into contemporary metallic surfaces: a journey that explores copper through two complementary expressions, the oxidative evolution of matter and its luminous interpretation. These are two decorative systems that turn the surface into an element capable of generating depth, movement and architectural value, helping to define spaces with a material, contemporary identity.
