Design and architecture exhibitions in December 2026: the calendar from Milan to Rome, London and the Vitra Campus

The calendar of design and architecture exhibitions open in December 2026: the Triennale, Fondazione Prada, the Vico Magistretti studio museum, Palazzo Reale and MAXXI in Italy, plus the Vitra Design Museum and London’s Design Museum.

December is when design exhibitions stop chasing the trade fair calendar and return to research: from Milan to Rome, and on to London and the Vitra Campus, it is the best moment to look at design slowly.

The design exhibitions in December 2026 describe a very particular season. Far from the Salone and the design weeks, museums are betting on major monographs and reopened archives: Costantino Nivola at the Triennale, Vico Magistretti in his own studio museum, Verner Panton and Geoffrey Bawa at the Vitra Design Museum, while MAXXI in Rome opens a show in mid December that questions architecture in the face of geopolitical crisis. For anyone looking for exhibitions in Milan in December 2026, the city packs the densest programme in Italy into a few kilometres.

Our view is that this calendar says a great deal about how we live today. Its protagonists are authors who held sculpture, craft, architecture and objects together without separating the disciplines: a model that feels current again now that the home asks for real materials, pieces with a story and less standardised spaces. We have selected ten real exhibitions, six in Italy and four elsewhere in Europe, all with dates confirmed by the institutions.

Which exhibitions should you see in Milan in December 2026?

The first stop is the Triennale Milano, which devotes its ground floor to Costantino Nivola with more than two hundred works spanning sculpture, architecture, design and graphics. Curated by Cecilia Alemani, with exhibition design by Alessandro Floris, it traces the Sardinian artist’s career from his graphic work for Olivetti to his invention of sand casting, through to the large anthropomorphic sculptures conceived for public space. It is the right show for understanding how closely post-war art conversed with architecture. Details are on the Triennale website; from 26 November the museum also hosts the multidisciplinary project by Soundwalk Collective with Patti Smith.

The second is Fondazione Prada, where on the ground floor of the Podium the exhibition Global Antiquity, curated by Salvatore Settis, Anna Anguissola and Chiara Ballestrazzi, tells the story of exchanges between the Mediterranean and Asia from 700 BC to AD 1000 through more than one hundred and fifty works. For anyone with a designer’s eye, the display is a reason to go in itself: it is by Rem Koolhaas and AMO/OMA with Giulio Margheri, with metal and fibreglass cases that arrange the objects by convergence and symmetry. The full programme is on the Fondazione Prada website.

At Palazzo Reale, Dalí e la Moda brings together more than two hundred works and documents on the painter’s relationship with fashion, from his collaboration with Elsa Schiaparelli, begun in 1936, to his work with Paco Rabanne in the 1960s. The ADI Design Museum, on Piazza Compasso d’Oro, remains the reference point for the history of Italian design with its Compasso d’Oro Collection, while the fourth floor of the Museo del Novecento hosts exhibitions devoted to the critic Tommaso Trini and to Vincenzo Agnetti. Pair the shows with a tour of the Milan Christmas markets and three venues fit comfortably into a single day.

Why see the exhibition on Vico Magistretti and Japan?

Because it is the most refined exhibition of the Milanese winter for design lovers, and you see it in the very place where those projects were born. Staged at the Fondazione Studio Museo Vico Magistretti on Via Vincenzo Bellini, Vico Magistretti e il Giappone is curated by Davide Fornari of ECAL in Lausanne and runs until 25 February 2027.

The exhibition reads more than twenty projects through three concepts of Japanese aesthetics: wa, harmonious balance; iro, the sense of colour; iki, elegance through restraint. Chairs, sofas, tables, lamps and ceramics converse with buildings and interiors, built and unbuilt, told partly through drawings by the Brussels studio Dogma, while the direct links with Japan emerge in the showrooms for Cerruti 1881 and the two residences for the Tanimoto family. It is a perfect example of how an architect’s studio can become a living museum, a theme we explored in our guide to house museums in Italy. Opening hours and bookings are on the Fondazione Vico Magistretti website.

Which is the most anticipated architecture exhibition of December 2026?

It is Frontiere. La geopolitica dell’architettura (Borders: the geopolitics of architecture), which MAXXI in Rome opens on 18 December 2026 in the Galleria KME and which runs until 25 April 2027. Curated by Pippo Ciorra and Dario Fabbri, it asks how the outlook and responsibilities of architects change in a present marked by uncertainty, conflict and rapid change.

The story unfolds through maps, installations and full-scale interventions showing how design responds to scenarios of crisis and transformation, and it hosts the MAXXI Architecture Film Lab, a workshop of the European LINA network devoted to architectural film. The museum’s annual programme also announces an exhibition on Rome’s Olympic Village for the same period. The container is a piece of history too: Zaha Hadid’s building, opened in 2010, is seen in December in a low light that heightens its concrete curves. Details are on the MAXXI website.

Which design exhibitions should you see in Europe in December 2026?

The trip we recommend is to the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, a few minutes from Basel, where two exhibitions justify the weekend on their own. At the Vitra Design Museum, in Frank Gehry’s building, Geoffrey Bawa: Architecture for the Senses is a retrospective of the Sri Lankan architect with more than 250 exhibits including drawings, models, furniture and photographs, new images by Iwan Baan and a scenography by the architect Lina Ghotmeh; in 2027 it travels to Hong Kong. In the Schaudepot, the centenary exhibition on Verner Panton rebuilds his 1970 Fantasy Landscape at full scale beside the Panton Chair and the Flowerpot lamp. Everything is on the Vitra Design Museum website, and if you want to combine exhibitions with festive atmosphere, our guide to the Basel Christmas markets and the Vitra Campus has it all.

In London, the Design Museum in Kensington presents Es Devlin: Other Worlds, the major retrospective of the British stage designer, covering thirty years of work across sculpture, theatre, music and light, with a recreation of her studio and the Infinite Library. From 6 November it is joined by The Nue Black Aesthetic, curated by Charlene Prempeh and devoted to contemporary Black designers. Exhibition details are on the Design Museum website.

How do you plan an exhibition weekend in December?

Choose one base city and keep the holidays in mind. Milan lets you see the Triennale, Fondazione Prada, Palazzo Reale and Magistretti’s studio in two days, alternating exhibitions with festive walks; Rome pairs well with a day at MAXXI after 18 December; the Vitra Campus is a few minutes from Basel. Our advice is to book timed-entry exhibitions ahead and to avoid the holiday closing days.

If you want to carry on into the new year, many of these shows stay open until February, March or April 2027, adding to the dates gathered in our autumn 2026 design calendar.
