Some buildings change their purpose without losing their identity. In Sorrento, overlooking Piazza della Vittoria and just a short distance from the sea, the 16th-century residence where Torquato Tasso was born begins a new chapter as Hotel Du Tasso, a five-star boutique hotel created through an extensive restoration project.

It is an interesting new address not only for travellers looking for somewhere to stay on the Sorrento Coast, but also for those interested in the evolution of hospitality through architecture and interior design. Here, contemporary design has been introduced within a building shaped by more than four centuries of history, without erasing the traces of its past.

From Torquato Tasso’s Birthplace to a New Hotel in the Heart of Sorrento

The history of the building long predates that of the hotel.

It was here, on 11 March 1544, that Torquato Tasso, author of Jerusalem Delivered, was born, and where the poet spent the first six years of his life. After serving as the Tasso family residence, the property began developing its connection with hospitality as early as the 18th century.

Today, the Iaccarino family, hoteliers for three generations, has revived this tradition through a project designed to preserve the historic identity of the palazzo while adapting it to the needs of contemporary hospitality.

Rather than artificially recreating the past, the project allows different periods and architectural languages to coexist within the same space.

Hotel Du Tasso’s Interiors: Where History Meets Contemporary Design

The restoration involved both the façade and the interiors, preserving the building’s historic architectural features.

Inside, the original architecture is paired with natural materials, bespoke furnishings and a colour palette inspired by the Mediterranean. Clean lines, tactile surfaces and shades drawn from the surrounding coastal landscape create a contemporary atmosphere while maintaining a strong connection with the history of the residence.

The lobby captures this dialogue particularly well: Venetian glass chandeliers are paired with chequerboard marble floors, while natural light and views towards the garden give the interiors a character that feels more residential than monumental.

The hotel features 33 rooms, including 15 Suites and Junior Suites, designed with refined textiles, high-quality finishes and a restrained approach to elegance.

A Mediterranean Garden in the Centre of Sorrento

One of the key elements of the project is the historic garden.

Lemon trees, citrus plants and species typical of the Sorrento Peninsula bring the colours and scents of the surrounding landscape into the property, turning the garden into a natural extension of the hotel interiors.

More than a decorative feature, the garden becomes part of everyday life at Hotel Du Tasso, from breakfast to moments of relaxation, reinforcing the connection with the Mediterranean landscape that runs throughout the project.

A Wellness Area Set Within Ancient Tuff Caves

Perhaps nowhere is the building’s layered history more evident than in its wellness spaces.

The wellness area has been created within ancient Roman-era tuff caves, transforming a historic architectural feature into a space dedicated to contemporary wellbeing.

It is complemented by a panoramic gym equipped by Technogym and a Spa scheduled to open in the coming months.

The hotel also offers private access to the sea. An internal lift connects the property directly with San Francesco beach and the port of Sorrento, a departure point for Capri and some of the Gulf of Naples’ most celebrated destinations.

A 15th-Century Chapel Preserved Inside the Hotel

Among the most unexpected historic elements preserved within the property is a private 15th-century chapel dedicated to Our Lady Star of the Sea, Madonna Stella Maris.

Inside, frescoes depicting the Madonna Bruna offer another glimpse into the artistic and religious history embedded within the building.

This layering of different periods and functions is precisely what distinguishes Hotel Du Tasso from a newly built hospitality project.

A Culinary Approach Rooted in Sorrento

The connection with the local area continues through the hotel’s culinary offering, which is open not only to hotel guests but also to outside visitors.

Led by Chef Marco Del Sorbo, the restaurant draws inspiration from the culinary traditions of Sorrento and Campania, reinterpreting them through a contemporary approach with a strong focus on ingredients, technique and local produce.

Breakfast also moves away from the traditional buffet format. Served exclusively à la carte, including in the garden, it is conceived as a more personal daily ritual. Bread, pastries and baked goods are prepared fresh each day, while some of the ingredients come directly from the property’s own vegetable garden.

The approach combines quality and personalised service with an effort to reduce food waste and support a shorter, more local supply chain.

The hotel bar completes the experience with a cocktail menu that also explores local ingredients.

Hotel Du Tasso: A New Way to Experience Sorrento Through Design

In an international destination such as Sorrento, where hospitality is inevitably shaped by the extraordinary surrounding landscape, Hotel Du Tasso takes a different approach: it begins with the history of the building and turns that history into the defining character of the experience.

Torquato Tasso’s birthplace, the ancient tuff caves, the 15th-century chapel, the citrus garden and the direct relationship with the sea are not simply historic features to be preserved. Together, they become part of a single narrative.

And perhaps this is the most interesting aspect of the project: it suggests that a contemporary idea of luxury does not necessarily come from adding more, but from recognising the value of what a place already possesses.

The result is a balance of memory, architecture, landscape and contemporary design that adds a new address to the map of Italian hospitality.
