From Paris to Venice, the dates and themes to help plan an autumn itinerary through design, architecture, experimentation and material culture.
Autumn 2026 design events cluster in September, when material fairs overlap with citywide festivals. October creates space for experimental work, while November still offers an opportunity to visit the Venice Art Biennale. Choosing the right trip starts with a clear aim: sourcing materials, discovering emerging approaches or exploring how objects interact with space.
This curated calendar brings together selected events, with dates checked on 7 September 2026. It is neither a ranking nor an exhaustive directory. Recheck programmes, admission requirements and reservations before travelling, especially when events in the same city operate on different schedules.
September: Paris and London, from fairground to city
10–14 September: Maison&Objet, Paris
The fair is relevant to furniture, decorative objects and interior projects. Arrive with a shortlist of categories and appointments, but leave time to explore one unfamiliar area. The institutional tourism portal Paris je t’aime confirms the September edition. For an active project, record sample availability, lead times and technical contacts alongside collection names.
10–19 September: Paris Design Week
A dispersed programme needs a different strategy from a trade fair. Grouping visits by neighbourhood prevents travel from taking over the day. Pair an established destination with an unfamiliar venue, comparing display design, lighting and the relationship with the street. The fair and festival have separate calendars: travelling during the final days of Design Week does not necessarily include Maison&Objet.
12–20 September: London Design Festival
London rewards routes organised by district. The V&A provides a cultural starting point, while other neighbourhoods allow visits to be selected by interest. The V&A festival programme explores Awakenings. For a short trip, we suggest two areas a day: a carefully observed installation is more valuable than a hurried sequence of stops.
September: material decisions in Bologna and Verona
21–25 September: Cersaie, Bologna
Cersaie focuses attention on ceramics, surfaces and bathroom furnishings. It is a focused choice for anyone specifying floors, wall finishes or installation details. Bring a plan, thickness constraints and photographs showing the actual light in your project. Compare maintenance and intended applications as well as appearance: a surface should not be assessed only under exhibition lighting.
22–25 September: Marmomac, Verona
Its dates partly overlap with Cersaie, so visiting both requires a selective itinerary. The Verona tourism portal confirms the natural stone event. Before travelling, explore the different possibilities of Ceppo di Gré in interior design and Rosso Levanto marble. Finish, vein scale and fabrication matter as much as colour when translating a slab into a room.
October: experimental design in Eindhoven
17–25 October: Dutch Design Week
Dutch Design Week suits visitors interested in processes and future possibilities, alongside finished products. The organising foundation has announced R.A.W., Rebel, Authentic, Worth as its theme. A productive visit distinguishes prototypes, research and commercially available solutions. An intriguing proposal is not automatically ready to specify in a home.
Allow time for conversations about the problem each project addresses. Asking what has been tested and what remains experimental produces more useful notes than collecting photographs alone. Colour observations can later be compared with our Pantone 2027 colour predictions, keeping editorial interpretations separate from official announcements.
November: the final window for Venice
Until 22 November: Venice Art Biennale 2026
The Venice Art Biennale continues through autumn until 22 November. This is the art exhibition, rather than the Architecture Biennale. It belongs in this selection because of the conversation between artworks, exhibition design and place. Give it its own time in the itinerary instead of treating it as a brief stop between transfers.
How to choose a focused itinerary
For an imminent residential project, one material fair and one cultural visit can serve complementary purposes. For broader research, a city festival and Eindhoven offer more open-ended comparisons. Our guide to European design capitals can help extend a trip beyond the event venues.
Check admission conditions, tickets and travel distances before booking. Keep enough space between appointments to record what you have learned: details become difficult to reconstruct once several stands or exhibitions blend together. Photograph labels as well as objects, and record whether a finish was viewed in daylight or artificial light.
After travelling, sort your notes into three groups: ideas ready to apply, contacts requiring follow-up and research worth revisiting. Compare each potential specification with the actual project constraints before requesting samples. Used this way, an autumn calendar becomes a working design tool rather than a collection of dates.
